Life ban for racist comments (5 Viewers)

Bradford city will consider a lifetime ban for a supporter who allegedly made racist comments towards a reading player .
How do you feel about this ?
Ofcourse the offender should be punished .. but does an idiotic comment deserve what is effectively a 50-60 year ban .
Im on the fence in regards to the severity of the punishment , but i do believe racism needs kicking out . I also believe in second chances though and think a 3-4 year ban and a hefty police fine is a worthy punishment .
Whats your opinion on this matter

Yeah, i think on the surface that lifetime is a bit OTT, but I guess it depends on what he said and whether he has previous history.

Certainly should be 3 year ban minimum. There is no place for racism in football or anywhere else to my mind.

a racist in bradford ? you would think he would move really.

as for a life time ban ? i agree it would be too much(depending on the circumstances as already said on here)

Once a racist always a racist, which means you are a racist for life. Nothing will change your views so a life time ban seems fair to me. I'm Irish and see all sorts of shit written and said about the Irish. I hate it but have to put up with it because being Irish, I'm "white". Doesn't seem to be racist to some people somehow.
By the way,

There is absolutely NO excuse to be Racist. The only way to eradicate it is education and severe punishments.

sorry HH, but don't agree with the opening statement.

I know a couple of blokes who are a bit older than me.....in their early 50's now...back in the late 70's & early 80's, they were young, dumb & racist.....got caught up in all that NF shit....

Then 2-tone happened....luckily their ears were open which allowed their minds to follow......

Anyway....happy paddys day for yesterday......you drunken old terrorist road-digger you:D

not sure what was exactly said but i think there is a need to consistency here, they cannot ban this chap for life and the Chelsea lot get a less harsh outcome (not saying they are). If the agreement is that anyone who has been charged with racism at football gets a life ban then thats fine with me as long as that decision is consistent.

It cannot be tolerated and will send a strong message out.

There is ofcourse the fact they only ban a player for 7matches etc etc for racist comments , this punishment seems severe.

Inexcusable behaviour but there is a problem here. Footballers are regularly given a chance to rehabilitate. Woman beating, racism, drug taking, manslaughter. So surely the fan should be afforded the same opportunity?

How will they enforce this ban?

Couple of things with this. First of all it depends on what they said and in what context. Secondly what evidence is there to support the allegation. Is it one persons word against another or did many people hear the comments? Thirdly people do change, and people can say stupid things that they don't really mean in the heat of the moment.

I think with cases like this there are too many variables to have a blanket ruling. If there is evidence against him then surely a few years ban is enough?

Also something I can never understand is its rightly unacceptable to make offensive remarks about someone's race at a football match, yet it seems perfectly acceptable to make offensive remarks about someone's weight or height. When is that going to change?

Finally, I have to point this out. The person allegedly didn't make a "Racist" comment, they made a "Racial" comment. There is a world of difference between those two things but that seems to have been forgotten in recent years.

Do we know this for sure if we don't actually know what was said?

Whether it was racial or racist.

Wouldn't we only know that if we knew what was said and we don't know what was said do we?

Well not really. In the true sense of the word there is no such thing as a racist comment, it would be a racial comment.

Racism is a form of discrimination. From what we know about this incident, is that somebody dished out verbal abuse, and verbal abuse isn't a form of discrimination.

What we allegedly have here is verbal racial abuse.

Okay. Understand what you mean now. That doesn't make it any better though does it.;)

No it doesn't change the severity of it.

.

The fact you cannot understand the difference says an awful lot.

Care to explain why then oracle?

Well for a start I think you do understand and you are just being disengenuous.

It's pretty obvious that insulting someone for the colour of their skin is significantly more offensive then saying someone is a fatty.

You know this already though.

Why is it obvious?

Your still taking a physical aspect of a person and using it as an insult.

Making fun of someone's weight could be deeply upsetting.

The person in question can lose weight then can't they?

Somewhat less offensive then suggesting separatism and inferiority due to skin colour - as you know.

So the person has to change their appearance in order to avoid abuse?

That persons choice.

This is a farcical discussion. Let's compare the following two statements

- you've ate all the pies you fat b******d
- you're a f*****g n******r

What do you think is the worst.

Its not about which one is worst, both are deplorable.

Racism has no place in our game, but a comment made out of drunken stupidity or when you're pissed off cus your team is fucking up, shouldnt mean you can never go to watch your team again. I think 5 years is plenty

I would say both have the potential to be equally offensive.

People call me a fat bastard everyday. It doesnt offend me, but i guarentee, if you go up to a black guy and call him a N****r, he'd be ddeply offended. No contest

So every overweight person in the world is as thick skinned as you?

I am sure that the likes of Nigel Farage and Nick Griffin would agree with you.

I imagine most people would agree. Many people find it upsetting when they become the target of abuse.
