We’re tip-toeing along at this early stage and I am sure it will become more intense as the weeks go on. But at the same time we would like to add some footballers to what is a thin squad at the moment. We have to get the best value because once we’ve spent the money we can’t spend it again.

In other words, he hasn't hardly got anything to play with.

Exactly. Now if it was the beginning of August then fair enough, but Christ he's only been back for four days!

I'd prefer us to take our time and sign a better player, than go gung-ho and sign shit.

As long as he signs the right players it doesn't really matter when that is. It would be nice if next seasons squad is in place for the start of pre-season training but there isn't a club in the world who will accomplish that.

The general trend since SISU came in has been to sign players as late as possible, so they don't have to pay the wages pre-season.

Makes sense from a financial POV, not so much from a teamwork and squad bonding POV.

Very fair point.

Fact is, we need at least 7 or 8 players I would have thought and very much in key areas. You don't want to be starting the season with players not having time to gel.

We need to be patient, but sensible. If a player is there TM likes we need to get in there and nab him before anyone else gets their hands on him.

We have things like this every year. 'Who would want to come here' and 'The manager has no money'. Two weeks later and we've signed players. Just be patient

Who cares when we sign players? As long as we have at least seven in before the final week of pre-season then it's absolutely fine. No rush at all.

I dont think there is a major rush either but having said that how many times have we missed the boat on a player we did want because we fucked around. If he has targets then go for them but i think its a bit of observing to see how the market is moving, who is excess to requirements etc.

Let's face it managers, agents, players, are all fishing and finding out what the market is; who is available and what for? Some players will be hoping to stay at Championship level or higher, but in a couple of weeks might realise they have to bang the door of Lge 1 clubs.

it will perk up in a couple of weeks.

The beginning of August would be too late to start faffing around looking for everyone's unwanted cast offs. If it's left that late the bubble of optimism will burst, ST sales will have slumped and folk including me will be thinking here we go again. I'd like to see the bulk of our squad in and settled by Mid July and have them taking part in the friendlies.

Well yeah, that makes perfect sense. Pre-season is the time to tinker around with systems and formations and of that in trying to get a squad to gel together.

For that ideally, you want all the players you wanted to sign up, signed up and playing for you.

Even less from a fitness POV - every manager in the world seems to bang on about 'wait until next year when he's got a full pre-season in him'... I look forward to quoting this again later. ;)

how refreshing !

am i right in saying the transfer window only officially opened on the 1st of June anyway?

we still have over 2 months until the season starts i dont think any club is yet to make loads of signings! People are getting very carried away this close season

Not signing players early will mean that we miss out on some. But a lot of these will sign early because they are offered what they are asking for. The closer to the season starting the less money they will accept. And the better players that are left without a club that were hoping for a Championship club will become available. We might be able to get a couple of these. TM knows what he is doing. He is also on a very limited budget like most clubs at our level. I would prefer him to be able to bring in 8 decent players towards the end of the closed season than 5 in now. And then he can look for a few loans to cover the spaces left over.

What we need to remember is that he will be a respected manager for our level. His only signing so far was a loan from Spurs.
