Mowbray admits he will have to rely on loans (3 Viewers)

Coventry City manager Tony Mowbray
Tony Mowbray admits he’s unlikely to have his final Coventry City squad in place until well into the pre-season programme.

The Sky Blues boss is busy trying to line up deals to expand his slimline group which, in keeping with last season, will be topped up with several loan signings.

But the nature of loan agreements from predominantly Premier League and the odd Championship club means Mowbray probably won’t get his hands on his targets until their parent managers decide to let them go out.

“Ideally you want players in position come July 1 when they report back for pre-season training so you have got your squad,” said the City boss.

“And yet, realistically, you think about building a team and we’ve talked about how important loans will be. We can’t bring in ten players that we sign so loans are very important and they’ll come a bit later because clubs, generally, like to have a look at them over the summer.

“Some will go on pre-season tour with their clubs and some won’t. They might play some Under-21 games and the manager might decide he’s covered in that department so he’ll send him out on loan, but it’s likely to be a good few weeks after they come back before we can get hold of them.

“And if we are going to have four or five of them then you take them out of the squad for the first few weeks of pre-season and it becomes quite a light squad. Some of our main players were loan players last year.”

Mowbray has already stated he’s keen to re-sign centre-back Matthew Pennington from Everton, midfielder Grant Ward from Tottenham and striker Dominic Samuel from Reading, although Ward is expected to have plenty of offers from elsewhere to play at a higher level while Samuel is likely to be given a chance to establish himself at the Madejski Stadium.

As for permanent signings, the club have opened negotiations with Reda Johnson, Marcus Tudgay, Chris Stokes and Ivor Lawton regarding new deals and Mowbray has spoken to several agents about new players he’s targeted.

But as the manager has already pointed out, it’s a bit of a waiting game as players and clubs try to get the best possible deals in the market.

And while it suits both club and players to be signed up in time for the start of pre-season training, Mowbray admits: “Some will try to shuffle their cards too much and the one the club they want never comes and then they start going back and that puts pressure on them to make a decision.“

About standard for the league really I would think. Can't say it's something I'm surprised by, it's just where we are at the moment and something as fans we just have to learn to deal with. It is what it is.

We knew this anyway didnt we?

he has released 8 players. If we are going to improve on quality that probably means bringing in about 5 or 6 players. Then about 4 loans.

Then it is about bringing on and developing what we have got.

I'm not against loan signings, on the condition they get a proper pre season training regime with their parent club before coming to us. Too many times we end up with players no one wants who have been shipped out in a 'bomb squad' like manner, come here with no fitness and needing months to play catch up.

I trust TM's ability to bring in decent loan player's, unlike Pressley's garbage

I think we know there has never been any cash available for perm players here for many a year and that isn't really going to change.

We will renew players contracts and that will count as perm signings and then draft a 3-4 'new' perm players and then pad out the squad with loans and youth.

We don't have money...

It's the timing of bringing in loans as well. Under Pressley it seemed we had a never ending stream of loans coming in and leaving just as quick. I think if TM can get say 5 loan players in on season long deals (or at least until January) then they can at least feel as though they are part of the squad and we can have some stability.

I think we need more than 4 new permanent signings. The current squad nearly got us relegated to League 2.

I would be looking at;
New goalkeeper
2 new centre backs
1 winger
3 midfielders
3 strikers

We've had 24 players on loan in the last 2 seasons. How can we ever expect a good season with player turnovers like that?

Well thats kind of my point. In an ideal world we wouldn't need loans and could afford to sign a full squad of permanent players but thats not realistic at the moment. So if we must rely on loans then its surely better to have 5 good quality players in right from the start on season long deals rather than going through umpteen players for a month here and a month there.

Never understand signing substitutes. Spend your budget on the first team. The kids and what we've got will do for subs. I'd rather we got 4 or 5 players of the right quality than went out and got 10 journeymen.

Nothing wrong with loans tbh. Getting the right sort of loans is key however, players with character and something to prove. It's also a good way of getting quality without paying anything.

Nothing that we didn't already know other than the few that wanted signings by now. I stand by 7 or 8 players in and 4 loans, maybe 5, from bigger clubs with TM using his contacts. Then the rest to come from the younger players already at our club. The clubs making signings this early are those paying what the players are asking for. We can't afford to do this. Otherwise we wouldn't be able to bring in enough players to last the season. It is a marathon not a sprint. If you pay big money to a couple of players it can cause ill feeling in the dressing room. And you are shafted when they are out through injury/suspension.

They don't normally come for free. You normally pay towards their wages. That is unless maybe the other club puts in a clause or two.

Quite, you pay a chunk of wages and can sometimes be called back to parent clubs at short notice too. As someone else says, we need a relatively stable team, a big turnover of trialists and short term loanees is a waste of time and will not succeed.

Which is why I hope that he brings in the loans from big clubs to get playing time. They shouldn't be needed by their own club and should be better than we could sign on a contract. And hopefully they will give full effort as they would want to impress their parent club.

And of course if they're any good, you have to fill that hole the next season when they aren't there.

Always nervous when players don't get a chance to bond, it kind of flies in the face of forward planning. Still (again!) we shall see.

I know it's the way things work, but there are a sizeable portion of the fans waiting to see concrete investment in the team before committing to a season ticket. Unfortunately as the bulk of the team building is going to take place after the end of the early bird discount I can't see the club getting anywhere near the 6k target. If they have any sense they will extend the discount or fix the price for all season ticket sales.

Ah, you've got to get over the Pressley Factor now though. I think TM's loans will be another thing entirely.

I have to say I always think that those fans "waiting for new players to sign before committing themselves" generally don't buy tickets anyway.

If the loan system is used well then it can be an asset, not a fan of the emergency loan system but it serves a purpose however you generally get little to choose from and more of a 'body' to cover the gap in your team. If we can get a few season long term or at least 6 months then i would be in favour for that. Prem league clubs are being more picky about where their players go nowadays so we need to be selling ourselves as stable and a club going places, TM can portray that so hopefully the quality will be available.
