Sky Blues boss is well down the line in negotiations with one or two new faces

Coventry City are closing in on their first summer signings which manager Tony Mowbray hopes to conclude as soon as possible.

The Sky Blues boss is well down the line in negotiations with striker Marcus Tudgay, who has been offered a year’s extension, and is in daily contact with Reda Johnson who, like fellow defender Chris Stokes, is on holiday.

And he’s also ‘close’ to agreeing terms with one or two new faces as supporters get increasingly impatient for firm news on fresh names that Mowbray believes can take the club forward.

Asked if there is any progress, Mowbray told the Telegraph: “It’s a good question and I think there’s always progress when you’ve had conversations.

“I’d like to think we’re close to concluding one or two but it’s never that easy because there’s always fine detail. You think you’ve done a deal and then there’s always something else that wants adding on.

"You have to get to stage where you say, ‘this is it, there’s no add on here and there,’ and then the agents always want to go away and talk to the player a bit more, so it can drag on.

“That’s why I have said before it’s a very early stage. Sometimes agents take your offer and go to other clubs and say ‘this is what I’ve been offered there, can you beat it?’

“That’s why I am not in any great rush. I understand supporters want to see some signings coming in, just as I do because I am sat here in my office and the board is looking very empty with holes all over the team at the moment. But they’ll fill up, hopefully with the right players.”

Asked about Johnson and Tudgay, he revealed: “Reda’s on holiday in Marbella at the moment and I speak to his advisor almost daily.

“I’d say Marcus is almost done; we’re just about there.

“Chris Stokes is away and I’ve really left that one with Steve Waggott to get on with.”

He added: “I have got no concerns at the moment. I’m not sitting here thinking, ‘oh gosh,’ because we’re just progressing things along.

“It’s not just me doing this. Mark Venus and Steve Waggott are doing certain things and Steve is involved because he's been doing it for a long time.

“As we move forward we’ll take more of that responsibility away from Steve who has a million and one other things to do as well.

"But hopefully together we’ll find the players we need to help us to do better than last season and progress to the top end of the table to see where we go.”

Mowbray is clearly hoping to attract players of at least Championship quality, revealing: “It’s not easy to do because players are, ultimately, looking at their options.

“There are certain players we’re looking at who might be thinking they can play in the Championship and they’re waiting to see if they get an offer, with total respect to us, because the vast majority of Championship clubs can pay their footballers more money than us.

"So they are waiting to see their options and I fully understand that.

“A lot of these guys are men with families, a wife and mortgage and are trying to do the best they can and we are competing in there trying to get the players we like that are in demand.

“But that’s OK. I fully understand that the fans and the club would like some names on the board but I feel quite relaxed about where we are.”

fans need to be patient and trust TM to get us the best players for our limited resources

I think agents are right up there with lawyers, taxi drivers, politicians and traffic wardens.

He can't want Stokes that much if he has left it in the hands of Waggott but continues to do the others himself. A reserve player and reserve....er....what does Waggott do?

We need taxi drivers. They get me home when I can't walk.

Think he has left Stokes with SW, as Stokes is on his honeymoon for three weeks and so he doesn't want to be handling the dealings right now. So would assume SW is just talking to the agent while TM handles the newer harder players to get in.

I agree SW doing a bit of contract negotiating, while TM is doing more difficult networking.

Reda is on holiday as well but TM is sorting that one out.

I think he has said to Waggott to look after the Stokes deal as he knows it will happen anyway and it keeps Waggott out of the way while they are doing the real deals

You can add football pundits to that list as well as I think they are dreadful and a waste of good air, who needs to listen to Michael Owen talk about football for about 1 million pound per year and now Gerrard is getting in on the act

You can read anything you want into a statement but I thought it was interesting that TM said Waggott is involved because he has been doing it for a long time and didn't finish it with and is very good at it;)

Hmmm OP did you change some words in that post? Because what I read this morning after the part where it says " Asked if there is any progress, Mowbray told the Telegraph: “It’s a good question and I think there’s always progress when you’ve had conversations."
It then goes on to say:
“There’s nothing in terms of anyone signing at the moment but I hope there’s progress".

:thinking about:

He's told us, most players are still on holiday, will be end of June at the earliest before things start to get sorted. If you look on the "in brief" on teletext most the news on there is about players signing new contracts at their clubs, few transfers as yet

TM says...“Chris Stokes is away and I’ve really left that one with Steve Waggott to get on with.”................................F**k that. This screams to me very little change where Waggot is concerned...f**king s**t decision, we want YOU to do all player signings not leave it to that twat.

Stokes will come back from his honeymoon, walk into Waggott's office, sign his contract and walk out again. If Waggott manages to fuck that up then he needs to be sectioned.

I could be wrong but I don't imagine Stokes has a massive amount of offers from other clubs and if we can't match a non league players wages then we are in the shit, all Waggott has to do is offer the deal if he says no then just don't let the door hit your arse on the way out.

nope, it was a cut and paste

If I was going to do that, I would have stuck in "and we are hopefully Lionel Messi will be arriving tomorrow"

Think he was referring to Venus!

No he was on about Waggot I'm sure of it

“It’s not just me doing this. Mark Venus and Steve Waggott are doing certain things and Steve is involved because he's been doing it for a long time.

“As we move forward we’ll take more of that responsibility away from Steve who has a million and one other things to do as well.

Sounds as if he wants to slowly push Waggott to the side which can only be a good thing.

You might be right. I read in my mind as ..'Steve is (only) involved because he's been doing it for a long time. Particularly as it's clear later asyou point out, that he'll be side-lining him!

Teletext?! Is that really still going?! Make more use of this thing we call t'internet my friend. Normally more than 3 paragraphs on any given page. Some 'nice' pictures on some sites as well.

Saying that, I used to love playing Bamboozle as a kid on one of the Teletext pages. Great days.
