Tony Mowbray in talks with Spurs over young players (3 Viewers)

Tony Mowbray is meeting with Tottenham to see if he can lay the foundations to take a couple of the Premier League outfit’s up and coming stars on loan.

The Coventry City boss would love to get Grant Ward back on a season-long agreement after the midfielder impressed at the back end of last term but may face stiff competition for his services from Championship clubs.

However, Mowbray already has a good relationship with John McDermot, who looks after Spurs’ development squad and was pleased with the way Ward was looked after during his time at the Ricoh Arena, and hopes that will pave the way for further links between the two clubs who he feels share similar footballing philosophies.

Coventry City's Grant Ward takes a shot
“Premier League clubs have got huge Under-21 development squads and that’s why I am going to have a meeting with the people at Tottenham to see if I can build some sort of relationship with them and look to potentially blood one or two of their young players if we can and if it suits us,” said the manager.

“It’s a football club with a pedigree that demands it’s players play a certain way. They have to be able to handle the ball and play and not be embarrassed by the football, and I think that’s a good match with us because I like footballers like that as well.

“If we can do something, great.”

Mowbray insists it has to be a two-way street and not simply a case of the loaning club benefiting from their young players getting valuable match time to aid their development. They have to be good enough to make an impact and help the Sky Blues achieve their ambitions next season.

“John McDermot understands and they, as a club, understand that it’s got to benefit us as well as them by giving a couple of their young players game time,” he said.

For fans desperate for news on new signings and fearing he will rely heavily on loans this season, Mowbray said: “I can’t just sit here and wait to get players on loan. I think we have to try to sign some of our own players and then if, somewhere down the line, the loan players come and we feel they can get in front of the ones we sign then so be it, but we can’t try to build our team on the back of hope.

“Generally the better loan players go away with their squads on pre-season, go on tour and see how they fit in. What happens in pre-season is that managers don’t want to play their first team players for 90 minutes in the first two or three games. They want them to play 45 minutes so they take young players to supplement the second half of the games, which means they take at least 24 or 25 players on tour with them.

“Invariably they are young players and the ones we would be trying to sign on loan.

“It’s not frustration but it’s a case of these things take time and you keep talking to the clubs because the managers reach a stage where they say they are not going to play the kids because the first team players are ready to start playing 90 minutes.

“And then they might make the decision that whoever it is can go on loan now, but that might be four weeks into their pre-season so we might have to go on our own pre-season before we get any loan players in.”

All logical and makes sense. It's a shame that that's the way football is nowadays and we don't in essence, get a full pre-season with a full squad, instead having some coming in 4 weeks into the pre-season.

Hey ho, the same for all I suspose (unless bankrolled by those with more money than sense).

There's a young lad at Spurs, well he's 22, called Cristian Ceballos. He was on the fringes of the first team in 2013 but it's not worked out for him. I think he was on loan to a Mexican club last year however I'm not sure whether he's joining them permanently or not. There's quite a lot of him on YouTube if you're interested.

Be great to see us get Ward back from them for the season but in all honesty think he'll be heading to the champ rather than here.

Yes it is the same for all. Unless you decide to ignore the loan market altogether, get in the best you can and work with that group right through the preseason.

Dunno about that. They didn't go up, and now they have to start from scratch in building a side again. So you never get that continuity and building a foundation, where you add a couple of players a season and improve, but instead have to hope on hope that it all comes together.

In fact he has been released. You know what to do Tony.

Yep, could take that approach. It would hopefully have more of a 'team' ethic about it. A bit riskier as we'd likely sign more 'dregs' though to make up the numbers?

I think we have a good chance with Ward. He enjoyed his time here, we looked after him and Spurs wouldn't, I guess, care what league he was in as long as he was getting game time, being developed and being looked after.

Wasn't there talk of some Spanish or Italian club looking to take him as well.

I'd be delighted, but bloody surprised if we got him back. Infact, I'd buy a hypothetical season ticket if we got him back.

Dunno, to be honest. Down to him and Spurs, I suppose.

TM certainly says it how it should be but then so did Pressley for quite a while. I think the key to success in this league will be to have a core of strong and reasonable players that belong to the club as it's spine with a sprinkling of up and coming youngsters from both the PL reserve/academy squads and our own youth system. I think Mowbray is trying hard to achieve what he desires but is maybe finding out just how hard that will be on such a limited budget and at a club with such a recent poor image. Coventry City and the City of Coventry all have to have the assets to attract the guys we need to compete.

Everything as to be expected. Other than for those that expected several permanent signings by now.

I dunno, there was always an air of spin and PR about most things that Pressley said. He was blunt at times, but even that felt like it was for media effect, eg sending a signal that he was "making a stand" and not soft one week then back to praising players who hadn't earnt it the week after. Mowbray is a bit more old school and very down-to-earth, not prone to hyperbole and knee-jerk reactions like Pressley. Very reminiscent of Robins if anyone of the managers that we've had in the past decade or so. He speaks so much common sense, doesn't waffle and gives off an air of a determined, bullshit-free focus on the goals that he has for the club. I love lines like "we can’t try to build our team on the back of hope". SISU needed a man with such ambition and strength and hopefully they understand that he's exactly what they need to recover the club's position and back him accordingly.
Mowbray excites the bollocks off me, tbh. If he can motivate the players half as much as he can me, then we could be in for a very good season.

Hmmm - Spurs link eh? Looks like we've got one more season with Maddison and then he's off to WHL.

I think too much is made of players 'belonging' to the club. Nearly all permanent signings we get in will have no affinity with the club or the region and our club will be just the next in a line of employers. At least a young loan might have a point to prove.

Push the boat out weeman and get a real ST! Go on! You know you want to.

Hypothetical season tickets won't get you that play-off final seat at Wembely you know!

It will only get you a hypothetical seat.

That usually means arse on the sofa in front of your 32" Philips LCD.

This reminds me of our famous tie up with Inter Milan...

We got Nuzzo and someone else...forgot their name for a season...next thing you know Robbie Keane joined Inter Milan a season later.

It can also mean you get some good permanent signings if Spurs decide they are not good enough in a few years time, Swindon got Nathan Byrne and Massimo Luongo on permanent deals from Spurs and they have been two of the divisions outstanding players over the last 12 months.

If we are to get any spurs players, would they want to exploit the Madison link and take him the other way for a season ?

As Mowbray said, it has to be a two way deal.

Swindon have done ok out of there link up with Spurs, signed good players on permanent deals like Luongo, Obika and Byrne with Luongo netting them around a 2.5 million profit with his recent sale to QPR. Some other quality loans like Pritchard as well

If they think he will become a good Prem player yes. Does Maddison look that good yet?

They could prob get Maddison for £2mil upfront & stupid add ons, send him on loan to champ for a couple of seasons likelyhood he does well, increases in value either makes it at Spurs or if not they sell to bottom end prem or champ side for possibly double what they spent on him. Worst case scenario he doesn't kick on over next 3 years and he moves on for a small loss.

On the whole the %'s to me say Spurs signing Maddison they can't really lose.

Maddison isn't up to the standards Spurs would like yet. Maddison isn't up to the level that Wilson was at whilst with us yet and no offer came in for him. We have seen how decent their young players are that get nowhere near the 1st team. Most of them end up leaving for free. They most probably don't even know who Maddison is yet.

I'm sure they do he's been on Man City's radar (that doesn't mean for 1 second they will buy him) just these top sides would see Maddison as a possible easy money maker spend 2 million double your money or more a few years down the line without doing too much with him at the club few loan spells etc.

But they let most of their young players go for free that don't make the Prem grade. They just aim to find 1 or two players a year. The majority of the others are left to restart their careers in the lower divisions.

Who's to say 18 year old Maddison can't be that 1 or 2, that's the 'gamble' for Man City or whoever at the top end of the prem?

Because he hasn't even been able to be 1st choice for a struggling team in the 3rd tier. Wilson was 1st choice and knocking in goals from all angles. So why didn't they try to sign him? If Maddison has a good season then it is possible. But just not yet.

Wilson was 3/4 years older than Maddison when he had that season for us at 6F, I would write off Maddison's potential yet.

The hype coming from youth staff at other clubs at the top end of the PL about Maddison they've obviously seen something at youth level so let's hope he can continue that form & step up to the pro level.
