Average of 49 games for the last 12 seasons. at least he stays fit will be 34 next month.
Good point but maybe Division 2 will suit him at his age.

Made a good career out of being crap and a good living
Crap? constant name on the team sheet at Sheff United and fighting for promotion each season doing the dirty part of the game for them, developed as time went on, and scored vs us at their place.
So if hes crap, shows how bad our midfield is.
Will do a decent job for Pompey in what looks like a decent side being put together by PC.

Think I'm in an ever decreasing number who think we miss him.
Nobody gives us energy and drives us forward from midfield since he left, the side's got worse and worse since he left, and centre midfield is particularly one-paced and lethargic.
Sure, he's not perfect, and that's why he never played for Arsenal... but he's a lot better than most of what followed him IMNSHO.

Doyler gets a lot of stick from our fans but he's had a good career for a player of limited technical ability. His most effective years were away from CCFC and the time when English football was defined by the default formation of 4-4-2. As a sitting or defensive midfielder in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 he was able to focus on his strengths, namely breaking up play and basic distribution. Will do well for Pompey and exactly the sort of grit they need to complement the more technical players they've brought in. Almost certainly adds a much deserved promotion to his CV at the end of this season.

Ever present in the Leeds side that got promoted out of our league but not kept on, was let go IMO from Cov due to his high wages, will do a specific job that Barton, Connor and Fleck can't do. If managed correctly would improve our midfield give it some balance and steel and allow the attacking midfielders to play further forward. Let himself down at Cov by trying to play passes that he wasn't capable of but remember that was in the championship a far higher level than Div 1. I think the Hughes Doyle midfield was hated so much because they both sat back deep and hughes who had been superb in his first season was disinterested the following season and Doyle was guilty by association. He aint Messi and I was pleased to see him go but he rarely gets dropped by any of the managers and that says something.

Sorry but Doyle was an awful player for us. Technically limited footballer who got away with it for years by huffing an puffing his way round the pitch and not getting injured very often. We were also crap when he was here remember.

I somehow don't think Doyle would have been our saviour. We may have progressed if we had a decent midfield in those championship years, having Doyle play week in week out held us back massively.
Our midfield has been vulnerable for years, Doyle got better as he got older, was shit for us, but ever present for sides fighting for promotion ( Leeds / Sheff Utd ) so must do something right, Id rather have Doyle in my midfield trying to make a tackle rather than a Finch or whatever fairy we want to play their not tackling at all and letting the opposition completely dominate them each game.

It says something when the only thing I remember him doing in the eight years or so he played for us was punching a Sheffield Wednesday player in the balls and not getting sent off.

In Doyle's case, I'd rather a bottler who gives something than a tryer who contributes nothing.

Doyles tackling was very poor as was his distribution.
Had very high work rate and fitness so rarely missed games. Playing in top sides at this level was bound to suit as others could deal with his limitations and he could provide cover and energy in the middle.
A player though who never really improved through the years or advanced his game.
He would add nothing to us now.

I think it says more about the lack of quality since rather than the skills of Doyle. I can't fault his endeavor and commitment but he was limited. Let's face it Paul Telfer ran around a lot, but most of it was because he never really got into the right position.
We haven't missed out with Doyle.

Thankfully we are not in for him so we can put that to bed. We are missing a bit of steel in the midfield and countless games last season where we were bullied off the ball. League one is a physical league and we need someone who can control the middle of the park. I was hoping Thomas would have stepped up to the plate but he just isnt close to it.
