Mowbray wants five more (4 Viewers)

Tony Mowbray has not ruled out coughing up another transfer fee to strengthen his Coventry City squad if the right player comes along at the right price.

The Sky Blues boss has switched his focus to adding pace and goals to the team after signing three defence-minded players – the club shelling out a fee for a senior player the first time in three years when they acquired combative midfielder Romain Vincelot from Leyton Orient.

But it’s all a question of getting the best out of the limited budget available, understood to be around the £2.5million mark.

“It’s all money,” said Mowbray; “it all comes out of the same pot. There’s not a transfer budget and salary budget, there’s just a budget.

“You have to weigh up what you are going to spend and give them as a salary and add it all up and ask if you can do it. In Romain’s instance, yes we could. But once it’s gone it won’t be spent again.

“We’re trying to stretch the budget as much as we can to get some forward-thinking, fast goal scorers into this building that can finish off the experience we have recruited at the back.

"That should help us keep some clean sheets and our quality in midfield will hopefully help us keep the ball and move it around to create chances to score goals.”

Mowbray, however, revealed he may draft in another defender if one of significant quality becomes available.

“If the right defensive player came along I haven’t given up in that area but it will only stretch as far as the budget goes,” said the manager.

Asked how many players, ideally, he’d still like to recruit, he said: “It’s very difficult for me to say I’d like four or five more because one of those might cost a lot of money and then we won’t be able to afford three or four and we’ll only get one.

“That’s the balance I have got. Do I get one really good player or three untried players who look like they have really good assets.

“Sometimes they work out – Dominic Samuel, for example, as a young boy in his first loan.

“That’s always a gamble because you don’t know how they are going to react to playing in front of crowds and cope with the pressure of playing with men whose mortgages and car payments are dependent on getting win bonuses, so it’s a different life to playing in the Under-21s.”

think he really wants samuel, lets hope it happens

The way he's mentioning him so often I wonder if he's been told there's a decent chance of him being offered to us? Its not like Samuel is going to be reading the CT every day and getting excited that's he's being bigged up.

He said a few weeks ago just have to wait to see how it goes at Reading, if it turns out he is going to be say 5th choice striker then we will probably be able to get him back.

Reading at the moment have Pogrebnyak, Cox, Blackman and also just signed Orlando Sa

Yeh he wouldnt be mentioning him all the time if he was out of reach. Must be pretty confident.

Then again might be reading too much into it...hope not though!

TM was told by the Reading manager that if he wasn't in their top 4 strikers after pre-season he could come to us. (Player willing and assuming no other offers that would suite Reading better of course)

Whilst he's a good player it makes me feel angry inside that all we can attract nowadays is Reading's 5th or 6th choice striker...

From a Reading fan:

One of our local reporters said that you have made an approach for him, that we have currently declined. He reckons that if we sign two strikers this Summer, which seems to be Clarke's aim, then Samuel will go out on loan. If we only get one he'll probably stay.

So I would say reasonably likely, definite interest, but won't happen until later in the window if it does..

When Mogga is talking about paying a fee for someone, do yo think he may mean Samual? If Reading sign another couple of strikers, maybe he is surplus to requirements. Specially if they are around his age or a couple years older. Maybe that's why Mogga keeps talking about him, maybe he knows if Reading get their targets he's coming to us!

*No proof, Just thoughts*

It's where we are at nowadays. League status won't allow us to attract any better players unfortunately unless it's a loan to put themselves in a shop window (although if Samuels came here like he did last time I think he'd perform because he wants to and can perform rather than just wanting to put himself in the shop window)

Yep, we got relegated from the Premier League along time ago.
Don't you think Samuel would be a good aquisition? I do.

Samuel is good enough to play for Reading. He's an excellent talent. A full season in league one he gets 25 goals, no doubts about that at all.

We should blow the budget on samuel give him a 4 yr contract he could be another Wilson in this division.

The good thing with Mowbray is that at last we have a manager who is a realist and is singing from the same song sheet as most of the supporters.

If we're gonna get 5 more then it would be nice to get some new faces in sooner rather than later. While I appreciate TM is rightly trying to pick out the best players, the squad needs to bond, and I'm getting impatient!
