Skipper Carl Baker, striker Leon Clarke and keeper Joe Murphy were told before Saturday’s League One opener they can go to save an estimated £1million a year in wages.

The trio earn an average of around £8,000 a week, money Coventry can ill-afford in their current plight.

I don't understand the second part, is it implying they earn 8k a week each or they earn 8k the 3 of them put together?

£8k each a week is £416,000 a year.

I know it's 99% unlikely, but will be great if Samaras signed.

My only con would be if could be bothered to play for us or just picking up wages?

Samaras would be a class signing and better than Zigic. Unfortunately, both of those are entirely unrealistic.

Would be great if it did happen though.

If you have ever watched him play, you know he would play well if the fans give him the support. One of my favourite players ever is Samaras.

£5k a week is not an out of the question wage especially for a clubless player, throw a promotion bonus in and Samaras is perfectly gettable imo Sisu need to realise the business they are in or ship out, pro football is expensive

Same. I love him. He's like a cheaper version of Berbatov...when he can't be arsed when the fans are on his back it shows. But when they get behind him he's unbelievable

So it could be down to the difficult choice between the sun, lifestyle in a capital city,European football, chasing league titles in Portugal to the fog, Ice, snow & rain, small gates, moaning fans, the Sky dome and a wet Wednesday at Rochdale !

His record isn't that great....1 in 4. 10/11 goals over a season in League One at that average.

Would rather us spend on someone else.

Just checked the accounts that OSB posted - Our entire wage bill in 2013/14 was £6.9m, that includes management, shop staff, medical, etc. but a good proportion of that will have been the playing squad, no way the average was only £1.2k or that Wilson was the second highest paid player on £1.6k pw.

Agreed. Murphy was on 6K a week, Baker on 10K and Clarke was on 2-2.5K. Wilson most certainly wasn't second highest player at the club. As previously mentioned on the thread, the figure 1.2K a week being the average wage for players this season wouldn't shock me too much considering the amount of graduates on our books

I know that Samaras isn't coming but it feels good to imagine it and contemplate ifs and buts. If he comes I'm getting home and away shirt with his name on it

Unless he's cut it since, he would have the loveliest hair the club has ever seen. It's like the sleek glossy coat of a well-groomed dog.

Murphy and Clarke were not on the books when Wilson was second highest on the wage.

Wilson signed a new contract that would run until the summer of 2015 with an extra year option in November 2013 which is the point at where his wage would have increased to the said 1.6K per week salary. At that time, Leon Clarke, Joe Murphy and Carl Baker were all under contract at the club

No it doesn't, it says they are interested

Beg to differ;

He was signed in July 2015 by Sporting Lisbon first team coach Jorge Jesus after already agreeing terms before the 2014/15 season had even concluded.

Admittedly its just a wiki entry so it means nothing at all but thats what it says. I did have a look on the sporting lisbon website news section but hes not mentioned on there. They were linked with him previously when he was at Celtic.

I'd imagine he will go to a club in America/China/Australia/UAE etc

Are you telling me that fleck (signed from Rangers) and Barton (signed for a fee from PNE) were not on £2.5-3.5k pw, given they were signed when we still had a large budget in our first season down here?

At Celtic it was about 1 in 3 and he played on the wing a lot. To think he wouldn't be a good player in this league is ridiculous, he just isn't a realistic target in my opinion.

I didn't say he wouldn't be a good player in this league...I just don't think his record is that great. Granted his 1 in 3 at Celtic. Over 46 league games, that would still be approx 15 goals...not the 20 goal a season striker we're after ;)

He would be an improvement on last season though, can't argue with that and would be a stand out signing in this league I reckon. The type that we'd be slagging SISU off for not getting if he went to somewhere like Rochdale or Port Vale.

I was talking about last summer... Not 2 seasons ago... At which point Murphy and Clarke were of the books... With only baker still on

Are you telling me they Definitely are? How do you know that? I did say the average wage of the SQUAD was 1.2k with Wilson on 1.8kpw (sorry I got it wrong earlier) so yes people will be on similar or more than 1.2k but we did not and do not have about 10 players on 3k a week.

Pointless argument. None of us know or are going to know the figures. Samaras will demand a lot higher wages than we probably could afford and besides, there will be a few other clubs above us that would be interested if he didnt go abroad.

I don't know they definitely are, but we know that the average wage was £1.5k pw a few years ago, and there's no way our average wage is £1.2k pw. But you don't know they definitely aren't. Have you found the link yet? And you're picking a specific point in time when we had very few 1st 11 players or decent squad players in the squad, as a point of reference for what is the current average wage and reason for the lack of signings. If our wage bill is in the top 8 and the average league wage is £1.5k pw, then it stands to reason that our average is higher than the leagues average.

Anyone know what they are on the football manager? They're usually well researched and not far off the mark?
