Coventry City are set to sign highly-rated Newcastle United striker Adam Armstrong on a long term loan deal.
The Telegraph understands that paperwork should be completed in time for the 18-year-old to make his debut against Cambridge United tonight in the Sky Blues' fourth pre-season friendly.
The teenager has Premier League experience with the Magpies and is a prolific England youth international who has scored nine in nine games for the Under-18s, having previously hit ten in 12 matches for Nuneaton-based John Peacock’s England Under-17s.

Newcastle born and bred, the Geordie’s best position for his club has been as a No. 10, although Sky Blues boss Tony Mowbray has plenty of options in that position with the likes of James Maddison and Ruben Lameiras vying for the slot as well as the more experienced Marcus Tudgay.

Very excited about this one, lots of pace will get plenty of goals at this level. Interesting it says long term loan deal ? Could that be a 2 year loan deal as we are starting to see more in the PL

This signing could go either way

He could be a massive hit and really pay off or be a huge flop nothing in between!

From the small amount of live football I've seen he seems a bit like a terrier

If you are forced to go for untested kids. This sounds like a player worth gambling on.
I just hope there is one proven 20 goal man in the pipeline as well as the loanee kids.
We know from history more don't work out than do.

I know he's a young lad, and this could go either way,

but im actually really excited about this one, you know how players that are nearly there drop down a division or two for a year, really impressing before breaking there way into the parent clubs first team (ie. Harry Kane) I could see him really shining for us, fantastic at youth level and youth international level.

Ive already been on the blower to my Newcastle supporting mate, he's a big fan, the sort that goes to reserve games etc. and he said that lad is brilliant and he thinks he'll be fantastic for us.

i know we'll get the usual sceptical "he's unproven at this level" etc. folks on here but I think this one was worth the gamble

Sounds good.

Let's hope he's the 20 goal a season striker we have been hoping for and seeking.

18 is very young to pile the pressure of being a 20 goal a season striker. His record at U18 and U17's is completely irrelevant. I think I'll wait until I've seen him play before biggin' him up.

I'm not convinced myself. Not saying the lad is crap heck I've never seen him play but we need goal scorers and he seems a more James Madison type of height and player and is only 18 and will get shoved off the ball like madderz does.

Not saying he is a bad player to reiterate but I think we need now a target man and some muscle upfront. Feel more confident then.

This lad is quality. I've bought him on Fifa before and he goes on to be 80 rated. Great signing Mowbray.

Well that's that then. Close the thread!

People need to think this is one player, not the target target man and the 20 goal a season striker, and the number 10 etc. he's one lad that will help the depth of the squad. Mowbray isn't thick, he knows this lads unroven and probably has tons of other targets in mind to fill the other roles, more experienced targets, he's already said he's looking for 3 more attacking players so I'm not sure how anyone could be anything but happy about this,

he hasn't cost anything, won't have took much if anything out of the budget and there's no denying he's got massive potential

Mogga is no Pressley, he would have done his homework on the lad, just look how well Grant did on loan last season.
This is a premier league reserve striker who will shine in this league, I have no doubt.

There's footage on the telegraph website and to me he looks very effective, making runs down the channels, good pace and skill + can finish with both feet.

Now I'm not saying he will score 20 goals or more but I definitely do believe he'll get at least 10-15 when given the opportunity.

It's a good signing considering our predicament but it would be a shame if this signing stunts opportunities for Maddison and Lameiras in the first team.

Agree with the above, looks a great prospect. Mowbrays will look for some bigger chaps around him I'm sure. Not the target and runners he spoke about but can certainly finish looking at that YouTube video. He also looks quite stocky compared to maddison.

Tell ya what,

I've seen bits and pieces of the lad in the past but I urge the doubters to watch that YouTube video on the first page, shows some touches of class, not afraid to have a dig, both footed, knows where the goal is...

A Newcastle Utd fanzine have commented on this "number 10" role the Telegraph have wrote about.
They claim this not to be accurate and in fact the only reason he has played this role in the past is because both Pardew and Carver didn't have the guts to play him as an out and out striker, which is his natural position.
Anyone looking at his goal scoring stats will see this.

Michael Mifsud has a good YouTube highlights video...

Was also a decent player for us, what's your point ?

This lad is 18 with undeniable talent, just pointing out that for folks to sit there and say "he's not a number 9", "he's unproven", watch him play a bit first

This is a good loan I think... seems hard working terrier like player with good eye for goal. A lot of potential (but no guarantee) and it shows TM is able to get the right quality of player. It also bodes well for the style of football we will be watching this season. Hope we now also get a forward who can hold the ball up so players like Armstrong, lameries and Madz can get in the game in the final third. My only fear is that a few teams in our league will try and bully these young lads

Isn't the point of a players YouTube highlights to show them at their best? I don't care what he's done in kids and reserve football, it's what he does for us that counts. I'd take the YouTube videos with a pinch of salt,

Armstrong has made 19 appearances for the first team up at Toon.

Don't underestimate this lad.

Absolute quality signing.

Guess where from:

18 year old...bags of experience then. Being used to bring players on by a premier league club who will recall him without a second thought if he takes off.SISU FC need players experienced in relegation battles methinks.
