1st half they got a lot of crosses in from the left, with a decent finisher we may have conceded a couple. 424 was very exciting to watch, but at time left our fullbacks a little exposed! Fleck and Vincelot worked hard covering their angles which was impressive too!

Bit exposed at times but fleck and Vincelot stuck to their jobs superbly and the defence mopped most things up. I do think real pace might expose us down the middle but that is for another day.
4-2-4 TM a genius. Certainly worked for us today

Doubt we'll see it all the time, but the most encouraging thing for me is positive intent.

Not expcting a glorious season, but the expectation of goals would be massive progress on most of the shite we've had over the years, and make games... fun again.

It's was a strange formation because although technically was 424, Maddison and Lameires were often both in central midfield with no one up top, must be a nightmare for centre back not knowing whether I mark, press or stand off.

It was a very compressed 4-2-4. Effectively we had zero forwards and two lines of midfielders. A 4-2-4-0 perhaps. Very clever tactic that kept our entire team behind the ball for most of the game and allowed us to nick and break quickly.

looked like 4231 to me with fleck and vincelot holding, obrien on the left of the three, armstrong on the right with lameiras behind maddison

Need good wingers for out and out 424 get that right can be deverstating to opposition. Going back to the JH days we had Willie Humphries and Ronnie Rees both great wingers regular internationals in third division football

424 will suit us against some teams, but other will tear us apart. My guess is TM is going to deploy different formation throughout the season, but interesting start to the season

That's pretty much what he said in his post match interview.

Not if the 2 central midfielders are right, at top level think of Roy Keane and Paul Scholes, think me and you could play on their wings. We have Vincelot who looks the business add this mystery top player and we'd be okay

A good win on the opening day of the season where the formation worked well and where every player did his part. The atmosphere was good too with fans getting behind the team,so the perfect start to a long campaign. But knowing Tony Mowbray he'll not get carried away but you can see he's got the makings there of a decent team,so let's hope we finally get a successful season but being a long suffering City supporter I've been there before so I'm keeping calm for now !

Different standard I know (well, perhaps not markedly different), but it sounds similar to the formation my A-League team used to play a couple of seasons back.

At times it was extremely frustrating not having a traditional centre-forward (or even just anyone in a "striker" position) but when it came off.....plenty of exciting football to be had. Gotta have the players (and the work rate) for it though.

You're spot on about the dilemma it creates for central defenders too.
