Found this on Twitter. Decent (embarrassing) reading.
It’s a bit bizzare how this blog post has come to fruition. On Saturday, I was on my way to Birmingham by train and I was joined by three old, mildly drunken Coventry City fans. We got talking football as you do, “football died once the FA got their wish for our top league to be money orientated” moaned one of the men. I would agree, it’s almost impossible for a club to spend little and achieve success nowadays. Even the Bournemouth ‘fairytail’ was a bit of a myth – they spent millions to get where they are.
Anyway, back to my original point of this blog. Around halfway through the journey, one of the Coventry fans told me that they had not finished in the top 6 of any league for 45 years. I laughed it off, not a chance I told him! 45 years without a top 6 finish, it just can’t be true.
The sad reality is: it is true. Coventry City have not finished in the top 6 of any league for 45 years. 30 of them were in the top division but that isn’t the point. The people of Coventry haven’t seen a winning football team for 45 years. The highest place Coventry City have finished in the last 10 years is 14th in League One, it makes for appalling reading.
I am a Luton Town fan, just like Coventry a club who’s been horrifically mismanaged in the past. I’ve been a massive fan since I was twelve but I would have to question why I’m wasting my money year on year if we didn’t finish in the top 6 of any league for 10 years – never mind 45! If my club didn’t show any ambition of moving the club forward on the pitch then why should I spend my hard earned money on a club what’s only falling year by year?
They must be the most loyal and patient fans in England. Putting it into context is hard – it’s almost impossible. The only scenario I can compare it to is a 100m sprinter who always finishes near the bottom in every single race, never troubles the top, yet still turns up week in week out hoping one race it’ll change. You’d probably give up after a few years because of pure boredom, knowing you’ll never be near the top – imagine that for 45 years, that’s what Coventry City fans have had to suffer. Year on year of bottom half finishes.
The last time the Sky Blues finished in the top 6, Paul McCartney announced his departure from The Beatles…
It looks like it could change for the Sky Blues this year, experienced Tony Mowbray is in charge and is building a good young squad which could break Coventry’s 45 year old hodoo. Young loanee from Newcastle Adam Armstrong has been the shining light, scoring 5 in 4 games. However, with Coventry’s luck, he will be recalled in the next few weeks and it’ll be 46 long years without a top 6 finish.
Clubs like Everton and Newcastle complain about not winning a major trophy for many years but Coventry? They’d be happy with 6th in League 1! Not asking for too much, is it?
Come on Coventry City, you have unbelievably loyal fans who have supported you year on year even when they know it’s most likely going to be another season of absolute rubbish and survival on the final day. No other club deserves some success more than them and if there is a club, I must not be aware of their existence. I will definitely be following the Sky Blues this season and hope it’s a successful season for them.
