what about those with the lever (handcars) you push up and down to make the train go, like from the old laurel and hardy films

A few of those would a) solve the train problem b) make us fitter

Love the entrepreneurial spirit. If they saw you turn a profit you would be out of business immediately however.

This is a piss poor situation tbh we have built a train line by a stadium and it cant cater to the fans but can for Tesco's shoppers?
How short sighted of all involved and how typical of our public servants who seem to reside on another planet most of their working lives.

The joy of free-market capitalism is that anyone can buy a train for the day: all you need is a spare £15,000 – or £40,000, depending on which report you believe. Virgin charter an average of two trains a week during the football season which take club managers, players and some supporters to away games.

Although the article that's from seems to be more about hiring a train to go from one end of the country so probably cheaper.

So there no problems with connecting the trains to the network. Just austerity.

I find myself strangely flicking through train brochures.

We could charter a train we just need somebody with good organisational skills and time on their hands calling Tim Fisher as trains are another thing that seems to have no concept of time.

Are we forced to go with London Midland or could we go with another operator?

Having a fully operational service on that line would be helpful. Have you ever tried to get to the Bermuda Park from Coventry by bus?

I know it seems like a 'crazy' scheme but why not give the line over to 'enthusiasts'?

I mean train enthusiasts NOT trainspotters. I believe trainspotters only try to spot trains whereas enthusiasts try to preserve old lines and use steam locamotives. Trainspotters would be unsuitable because they would just stand on the platform waiting for the train rather than providing the train.

If you go to Kidderminster they have a steam locomotive that is an important part of the community's life and existance. Yes, they get sightseer from all over the world coming to ride their train and it even appears on TV and movies. If CCC had any brains they would see this as a 'real' solution. Having the line run by enthusiasts they (the council) wouldn't need to do anything because enthusiasts get things done.

no never I haven't got enough time, I have used the little noddy train to go between Nuneaton and Coventry but only because my older boy wanted to go on the train, I could walk to Bermuda station in 5 mins but would still have gone in the car.

Would be nice to see some trains at the transport museum and a train heritage site would surely help with our City of Culture bid.

Its every hour at about twenty two. The train is a joke, i catch it every day and there is regulary 20 plus people having stand as its so full. Can someone explain to me why they extended the platform at bedworth if there was no plan for a bigger train !!!

There's plans. It's two years away. Apparently this is par for the course. The rail network is over capacity and rail companies wont buy on stock unless they're forced to.

Of course CCC could've asked to not build the station at all which seems to be what people want.

The fact is train companies in this country run a shit service all over and don't want to invest.

If we're likely to get more than 1k or so it's probably worth someone renting a train. Looks like that's what Wasps are looking into.

But hey, why waste a good opportunity to complain about politicians.

very true, although I am sure there are loads of honest decent politicians about. You have clowns like Maton trying to get himself in the limelight whenever possible and just making them look like a bit of a joke.

Sometimes mate I wish I hadn't grown up around politics. It'd be lovely just so shout "they're all bastards" whenever something goes wrong.

Many of them are bastards. Many many more are trying to do their best in a complex job that involves many different organisations with their own agendas.

I'm no fan of any particular politician at CCC. But I'm well aware that even stuff as simple as potholes has a host of laws and regulations and competing organisations.

Something like this involves coordination with the train companies who will have their own agenda. Which has to be approved by central government (and wasn't for a long time) and involves funding from several sources is last guaranteed not to have everything work together. The choices would've been have it open two years before the trains or don't have it open at all. It's a shot situation.

I don't know Maton too well. But the vast majority of those I've met, though occasionally too concerned with the politics and not the policy, genuinely just wants to improve the city and have their hands tied eight ways to Sunday.

Edit: typos everywhere.

But then if they were told years ago about the train situation, why since then have people being going on about how great it will be for the club. Wasps have been going on about shuttle trains every 10 minutes for their fans so they must have been told it too?

Why not just say five years ago "The first step may be limited due to this and that but then when the line is electrified in the second phase it will be a lot better"

I dunno mate. Communication never seems great. I mean this was posted on here a few weeks ago and didn't get this response after someone rang up the train company. Was that the first time anyone knew? How detailed were the plans published? I don't know.

I agree managing expectations would be good in politics. There seems to be an attitude of "we'll cross that bridge when we get to it" possibly due to the fact that they might not be around by that time. I also don't know how rail electrification happens and if it's linked to what he government of the day does.

But yeah, I'd agree that communication has been poor on this and many other projects. It all needs to be a lot more open. Though the press do their best to fuck that up too with sensationalist headlines. and we as the public fuck it up by getting into Twitter hate mob mode. It's a microcosm of politics at a national level I guess. Everyone wants honest politicians but will jump on anyone who tries to be honest (see Farage and Corbyn at a national level). But yeah, all that aside. It should've been made far clearer what the plan was.

I'd have much more respect if a politician came out and said "Yes, between us and so and so this has been a huge mess. We apologise and will do our very best to resolve this" rather than Maton just coming out and trying his best to patronise everybody for a chance.

All sorts of scenarios around this issue, national Government, train company, CCC take your pick. Seem rather quiet to me our council but then who there could be to blame, for instance there was a Tory controlled council here from 2008 until 2010 but a Labour Government, before that no over all control, since 2010 Labour control council but a coalition central Tory/Lib Dem. Government, getting anywhere near the root of this saga will be almost impossible. The station project was on and off for years and seemed to get the final go-ahead out of the blue if i remember correct.

I think that's the crux of it. Wasps saying once the station is built then fans can use it to get to the Ricoh. Then you have LM saying, er..no, we said five years ago that wouldn't happen.

They should call the station Fuck Up Central.

But then if they were told years ago about the train situation, why since then have people being going on about how great it will be for the club. Wasps have been going on about shuttle trains every 10 minutes for their fans so they must have been told it too?

This is nothing to do with the owners, is it? Unless you mean Wasps, the owners of the Ricoh. ;)

FFS... JH did it back in the 60's...Wait a sec, He had the backing of the owners...Forget it!

I suspect the Wasps were sold the official line to attract the buying of the Arena, everyone thought there would be a load of trains servicing the stadium on match days someone somewhere and i can guess where kept the reality in their heads and that might not be councillors by the way, but someone knew.

So London Midland didn't tell the council?

I know it's probably not a comparable example, but having been to Brighton to watch us a couple of times at the Withdean - I remember going on a train to get near to the ground. That wasn't a main line was it as it dropped us off in the middle of nowhere? I can't see how they managed to get it working well and yet we can't??

If there is some obvious reason that I have missed happy to stand corrected.

You can tell the truth Nick but not necessarily the whole truth politicians, bosses even football managers do it all the time.
What does puzzle me is why this hasn't been picked up ages ago, now i am no expert in how a train line works but how can a 10 minutes shuttle service from Cov to the Ricoh work with no turnaround facility ? it would mean trains running up and down on the same line, can that happen ? and you never see diesel trains pushing carriages. The one carriage train that goes from Cov to Nuneaton now i think is diesel with a driver one end only i believe so as said the limitations were surely obvious.
