This is phase 1:

Coventry Arena Station:

A new station, which will accommodate six car trains, is to be constructed adjacent to the existing Ricoh Arena and the area available for future development

Bermuda Park Station:

A new station, which will accommodate three car trains, is to be constructed close to the Bermuda Business Park between Bedworth and Nuneaton together with car parking facilities

Bedworth Station The existing station at Bedworth is to have its platforms extended so it can accommodate three car trains.

Coventry Station:

A new six car bay platform is to be provided in the north side of Coventry Station to cater for the enhanced service to Nuneaton and will minimise disruption to West Coast main line operations
Enhanced Service The existing hourly rail service is to be doubled in frequency with two car trains replacing the current single railcar.

Can't help but ask: What was the date the funding was removed/halted by Government?

Seems Wasps didn't. Or the councillor I quoted.

Still the nationals are having a good laugh about it. You better write to them all.

It makes a good story if you read it at face value.
If you can be bothered to check the easily available facts it's a non story.
The fact that the NUCKLE infrastructure is complete for North of Coventry and the inability of the train company to work out a temporary solution is the real story.
Mark my words but you will see a temporary solution by Christmas.

Isn't the 5th platform a requirement for more trains? Can't see that being ready by Christmas.

You seem to know something about this project.

Is it not the case the service intervals cannot be altered until a new platform is built at the Coventry station?

I honestly haven't a clue mate. Just enjoying googling trains.

If anyone is interested this is what they have been doing in Glasgow. This has now been refurbished.

I'm sure this Roger McGough poem sums up what has gone on at every meeting so far in this debacle!

"I wanna be the leader
I wanna be the leader
Can I be the leader?
Can I? I can?
Promise? Promise?
Yippee I'm the leader
I'm the leader

OK what shall we do?"

This gets more interesting.

The Class 153 or what's better known as the noddy train can be used as a three car unit.

Was the poet in question inspired by Garry Glitter?

Straight out of the Porterbrook catalogue.

"The Class 153 “Super Sprinters” are the only single-car units available
on the UK rail system. They provide an economical means to operate
services which may be lightly loaded but must be run to meet franchise
obligations..."

I think though the project indicates to increase the frequency of trains out of Coventry a 5th station is needed.

There is no indication when that will be developed.

I believe the 5th platform is tied in with the extension to Kenilworth and maybe beyond.

From how I have read it, you can't have one without the other.

What does lightly loaded actually mean though to the bean counters. A person earlier in the thread said the train was full in rush hour if I can remember correctly.

I wonder what the delay was in the start of building this line and why it started all of a sudden?

Do you mean the line or the station at the Ricoh? The line has been there for decades. I remember it being re-opened when I was at school after lying un-used for a period of time.

From what I've read the station at the Ricoh was delayed because of delays on the whole of the knuckle project, the reason it was then rushed through was because it was use it or lose it time for the funding.

Yes, I grew up in that area as well and know it very well.

Do you have any idea what the major benefit is in Coventry joining the West Midlands Combined Authority?

Sounds like you already knew the answer to your question.

No ideas on the pros and cons of joining the West Midlands Combined Authority. You?

I always use Wiki. Not perfect but does lead to some logical progressions. It does say amongst other stuff: "..a strategic authority with powers over transport, economic development and regeneration.."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Midlands_Combined_Authority

So these delays in the KNUCKLE. Any idea what caused them?

Just out of curiosity and I will throw this out to everyone. What benefits has there been to the local people of that area in this regeneration scheme so far?

There's an article in the CT from 2013 I think, which has it down to delays in funding IIRC. This caused the project to be split into 2 phases as I understand it. The platform at the Ricoh being part of phase one along with Beduff platform extension and the new Bermuda Park station. All of which I believe has now been done although I could be wrong on that. Phase two I understand is going the opposite direction and includes extending Kenilworth station and electrification of the entire stretch from Warwick to Nuneaton. Now scheduled to be completed in two years time.

Where's the fifth platform at Coventry without which it seems no train frequency can occur?

Yep. Forgot about that. That's part of the project too as you say. Not sure if that's phase one or two. Either way it's still to be done. I don't recall reading anywhere what the specific schedule is for that but if the rest of the project is anything to go by it's probably behind schedule.

I do believe the electrification of the line is of a bigger project starting at Southampton to some northern place, with the idea of the KNUCKLE being a gateway for the local area to get to Birmingham for the future HS2. Interesting that it started in Coventry as well.

Oddly the council seem to have forgotten it too.

You would think if this came from Government down to local level then the money would be available for trains.

I think the Warwickshire Councils have tied in Coventry Council that one cannot be built without the other. I cant think of any other reason for it to be set out this way.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the government shelved/postponed the Sheffield to Southampton electrification a couple of months ago ? It was put up as a means to shift goods more efficiently rather than to introduce better passenger routes.

Like it or not there's a devolution agenda in Westminster. Either because giving power away is good or because you can devolve cuts and have a different target for the ire, depending on your side of the fence.

The "Northern Powerhouse" with a mayor for Manchester and the devolution of Cornwall are a couple of examples. Basically in the future both parties are looking to split England into a variety of regions or city regions. It allows more local decision making but usually doesn't devolve revenue raising powers so you're still at the behest of central government. It also helps politically with the Welsh and Scottish questions and EVEL.

We can choose to join up with Birmingham in the hope of not being left out of this move and gain more local powers as well as probably increased investment. Obviously it would also mean handing some power up to the Greater Birmingham Mayor or whatever and you could see us being less relevant locally despite being in a more relevant region nationally.

Personally I'm not a massive fan of piecemeal devolution and would rather see regional assemblies than Mayoral districts. I'm not convinced local power is any more accountable and without proper fiscal autonomy and local leaders power is minimised. Also I'd like to see a move away from taxing consumption with VAT to taxing land locally with something like LVT so local areas can effectively compete and are rewarded for increasing the value of their land. I worry that this form of devolution will result in low turnouts and less government scrutiny. However if it's going to happen we are probably better off in a large region than not.
