Grendel think you are being a bit silly here... A lot of goalkeepers have prem contracts but it doesn't make them up to standard... Look at most second choice goalies when they are released, the drop down a division or 2... David stockdale-championship
ross turnbull-championship
brad jones- league one

these are just a few examples, number 2's are often of poor standard even at top clubs... So imagine the standard of a number 3?

Don't be silly. When he was here he was just a loanee from a championship club who looked no better than an inexperienced league one kid in goal. He's got a premier league contract now and if he's lucky gets to sit on the bench. That automatically means he's improved and is better than Burge. All the evidence is clearly there ;)

Quick question. Has Alsop even played a competitive game since his loan with us?

Quick question.

Did you ever play in goal? If not then did you ever play in defence where you would know the difference that a GK with a big gob that comes out for the ball and gets it most of the time makes?

I just don't get how some don't understand the basics. All decent managers have their opponents watched. These days they can even do it online. They take advantage of weaknesses. One of ours is a GK that doesn't go for crosses. So they will be told to keep sending the ball over. If the ball goes to one of their players they have a good chance. If you have a confident GK who claims about everything you get less dangerous balls in the area. If the ball does go in the area you then have someone who can deal with it. Your defenders can then push out a bit as they trust their GK to command his area. If not they have to stay closer to the goal giving their opponents more space in attacking positions.

None of this is saying Burge is a shit GK. But he could be much better in two very important areas.

When I played centre half if keepers came and claimed fine. If they didn't it was my job to clear it. I wasnt bothered which one of us was taking responsibility for the cross. For me the ones I hated were the keepers that never shouted if it was their ball. Nothing worse than heading a ball clear then getting two fists in the side of the head.

You don't have to shout and scream all the time to be a good goalie. Most notable being David Seaman. This always seems to get picked up in interviews with him and he always confirms that he's not like that. I remember reading an interview with him where he said he only ever shouted at a defender on one ocassion what he expected of them during his career and he did it in the privacy of the dressing room. I don't recall who it was but it was in his Arsenal years. Instead he talks about the understanding between the defence and the goal keeper, if you have that you don't need to scream and shout.

murphy was 1 of the big reasons we got relegated from championship

burge is a worry, its that simple.

Really? Murphy was one of the smallest reasons tbh...

Gunnar, King and Westwood all left for free
Bought in McDonald and that's it... Plus nimley and Norwood on loan
Sold top scorer in january
had Andy Thorn as manager
had a midfield of: Thomas, clingan, baker, mcsheffery, deegan and bigi for most the season only one of which is playing at a higher level.
Had a strike force force of: Nimley, Platt, Juke(half the season) and McDonald...
Had full backs: Christie and Hussey both can't defend and Christie was 18...

yet murphy was one of the biggest reasons? Good one there mate...

Shouting for the ball and shouting at your defenders are two totally different things. If a keeper keeps quiet how is the defence to know if he is going for it or not?

shocking yesterday

Even more shocking is that we still have some defending him. GK is the most important position on the park. All other positions can help each other out. We have strikers defending. All players helping in midfield. Even our defenders are scoring. But nobody else can put the gloves on.

Mowbray will be on to it have no fear regards that I think that could well be our regular back 4 and if Burge's handling which was poor yesterday doesn't improve significantly I am certain Mogga will change the keepers.

Burton keeper quoted on BBC website that he thought he was at fault for one of our goals - missed the cross! Bad day for GK's or bad ground for GK's?

Jamie Jones. Pity we couldn't've kept him.

Our keeper clearly has confidence issues,my view is after the fa cup debacle last season he should have been released,Pressley never played him after that and it has left an impact on him,he is a good keeper but I believe his future lies elsewhere so he can restart his carreer.

he let nearly every shot in, thats a big reason for me.

rememebr he let alot of goals in diving to his right, just not championship quality. was good in league 1 though

I said this. Was good for us and actually caught the ball. Preston fourth choice and he wouldn't cost much much. Surely better than what we have got.

He didn't have too much today, didn't try and catch and just got it away. Made up for a dodgy header from stokes but was quite quiet.

Dont get why he gets so much stick on here, one dodgy game ( which we won) did what he's been doing all season today, he's doing fine

Jones is dreadful.

'Preston fourth choice' tells you all you need to know surely?

Burge was very good today.

Hardly pulling up trees is he? Couple of decent saves but still several dodgy kicks and had a let off when Chesterfield's player was sent off for attempting to handle the ball into the empty net when burge stayed rooted to his line.

Let's not get carried away.

i doubt there's any keeper in this league who's pulling up trees, clean sheet 3 points...he'll do for me

You know wer'e doing well when fans are trying to find something wrong with burge when he's doing nothing wrong. Must be the shock of having nothing to moan about , there's not a keeper in any league who doesn't make mistakes, he'll do

Or it shows his levels of mediocrity when people start mentioning him in games where he had nothing to do as a sign of his ability.

i bet your one of those fans who was pissed of he didn't chuck one in the last minute today, getting desperate when you start knocking a player who's doing nothing wrong..

He done ok today, two decentish saves and no mistakes. Even made a decent catch near then end.

Nothing to get overexcited about but its a base to work from and should help restore a little confidence.
