Football League reject City's request to postpone Burton game (1 Viewer)

Tony Mowbray has revealed that he tried to get Sunday’s match at Burton Albion postponed due to Coventry City having three players on international duty.

The Sky Blues travel to the Pirelli Stadium this weekend without leading scorer Adam Armstrong and midfielder Bryn Morris who are with England Under-19s and 20s respectively, and back-up striker George Thomas who is away with Wales Under-19s.

Football Association rules say that any club in the lower two divisions of the Football League that has three or more internationals on duty can request a postponement, but when Mowbray contacted the FA yesterday to ask for the televised fixture to be moved to enable him to name a full-strength squad against the newly-promoted Brewers at a later date he was told City don’t qualify because Armstrong and Morris are on youth loans.

“We asked the question but the answer is no and we have to get on with it,” he said. “Youth loans don’t count, apparently.”

Tony Mowbray
“I have had a discussion with the FA because bottom line they are playing in our team. George Thomas has been off the bench enough times to qualify, Bryn Morris has played a couple of times off the bench and Adam Armstrong is a major player for us.

“I am just thankful that Sam Ricketts and Reda Johnson have not had call-ups from their standby status.”

City’s goal scoring centre-backs have, unusually, been omitted from duty with Wales and Benin this time but Armstrong – who has been nominated for the League One player of the month award after his sensational start to the season – is on England Under-19 duty with former City boss Aidy Boothroyd ahead of the international friendlies against Germany and Croatia either side of the trip to Burton.

Middlesbrough loan man Morris is also unavailable for the game because he is in Keith Downing’s England Under-20 squad which faces the Czech Republic at Shrewsbury’s Greenhous Meadow on Monday.

Thomas, meanwhile, is in the Wales Under-19 squad due to play Poland at Bangor City on Saturday.

No doubt because it is a Sky Sports game they won't move it. Expect that the Football League do pretty much everything Sky request of them.

Well that's what you get when you get players on youth loan I'm afraid.

In all honesty the problem is we lose our only goal scoring striker.

Nothing that wasn't expected I'd imagine. A couple of posters on here had picked up on youth loans not counting so I can't imagine that the club didn't already know that when asking. No harm in asking though, you never can tell with the FL and their guidelines. Err sorry, I meant rules.

What's the difference between a youth loan and a loan? Why does a loan count as a international player but a player on a youth loan doesn't?

It's one rule for one and all that with the FL and most big organisations. At least we tried. However, being on Sky probably had more weight than the loans.

Tudgay will be okay based on Tuesday's showing with Murphy in support, might see Lateef sooner than expected too, at least on the bench, we are only missing one really in Armstrong from our current first team.

I was thinking the same thing seems you even get punished for loaning young players that have potential rather than some bloke who is just sitting in a bigger teams squad.

Going to be a very worryingly thin squad for Sunday, especially up front.

Lateef will surely have to be on the bench, even though TM has clearly said he sees him as an under 21's player for the coming weeks.

If Tudgay gets injured on Sunday we are in big, big trouble and with the injuries, that means we are missing Maddison, Willis, Thomas, Morris and Armstrong. 5 players from an already wafer thin squad and 3 of those, forward players.

Surely greatly lessens our chances of a result on Sunday.
