I know he loves himself but you have to say he is one hell of a footballer.He's just equalled the Real Madrid scoring record and has just notched his 500th career goal and will no doubt go on to bang in many more.So you have to put him up there with the all time greats even though Messi is alongside him without a doubt.But is he on a par with Maradona,Pele,Eusebio,Puskas ? Different eras etc but he has to be in there now ?

where are the zidanes , ronaldhinos , vieras , or scholes type players these days , if you go through each national side only 1 or 2 teams are better than their counterparts from the last era ..
they are great players no doubt , but i think we are in an era where its simply too easy for them , especially in the brilliant sides they play in

My late father would always say that the players of his time were the best and I've said the same to my sons so it's nothing new is it ? Football today is less physical than it has ever been and any contact is minimal,so when I look back at the likes of Best getting battered by hard defenders and still somehow mesmerizing us with his ball skills,you have to say what would he have been like if he was playing today ? But players can only play in the era they are in, so the likes of Ronaldo and Messi have to have the recognition they deserve don't they ?

In 40years time kids of today will be old or middle aged. They will go on and on about messi and Ronaldo and their children n grandchildren will have new heroes.
For me, though I never saw him live, the greatest has to be Pele not just for his skill but his success as a World Cup winner x3, goal scoring record and all round play. Can't see that ever being equal led.

Disagree, I believe they are so popular because of publicity and marketing. Every time either of them scores a goal, it makes headlines. I think there is not that much of a gap between those two and the next level of players like Neymar and Suarez. And regarding the Portuguese Ronaldo, I think the Brazilian Ronaldo (and I don't mean Ronaldinho) was a much more exciting player. But the best all-around player for me was Johan Cruyff.

For me it is difficult to comment on who the best of all time is as I have never seen players like Duncan Edwards play, the best I have seen is Maradona, Pele's legend has grown over time yes he scored a lot of goals as he keeps saying but most are against sub standard teams in Brazil and the USA, Maradona done it in Europe and the hardest league in Europe the Italian league.

the best player I have seen live was Paolo Maldini absolute class.

They are both special players, Ronaldinho surpassed the Madrid record last night but in about half the amount of games which is phoenominal. This is similar to the greatest single thread, they are all special players but people will align for different reasons whether that be age, nationality etc. For me messi is the best player

I saw George Best play 3 times against us and 3 times he was average and I felt a bit let down as even though it was verses the City I wanted to see his brilliance etc.But that doesn't mean he wasn't a genius as his performances were there on record. And the likes of Puskas his goals ratio is unbelievable and it's there on record for generations in the future to look at.So every decade throws up great players and each one deserves recognition as they are unique in their own way.

I wrote an article recently for an online football magazine on the Mighty Magyars the great Hungary national team that came to Wembley and beat England 6-3 in 1953.England until that day were unbeaten at home and were red hot favourites but were outclassed by the football the Hungarians played as it was new and with tactics never seen before.And the Magyars style of play was the prototype for football in the future and Puskas was doing "Cruyff " turns long before the great Dutchman.Check them out you'll be surprised at just how good they were !

Ronaldo's stats are up there with the very best, but looking at with your eyes in general play, in my opinion he is nowhere near the level of the Messi's, Zidane's, Cryuff's, Maradonna's etc. He's a phenomenal goalscorer but if he's not scoring he doesn't offer you a lot, whereas Messi is a brilliant technician, he doesn't need to hit the net to play well, he has so many more attributes from a technical standpoint I find it very hard to compare the two, as for me it's not a debate. Messi is clearly the better football player.

Go on then? Not denying Ronaldo is brilliant but as an avid La Liga watcher it's clear to see that Ronaldo's all round game over the past 2 years has massively dipped apart from his goal scoring.

Technically he is nowhere near Messi however he is the better athlete.

I think you'll find in the last 2 years the number of assists that Ronaldo has provided has gone up, and is pretty much on a par with Messi.

From a stats point it is yes, but watching a game generally, with your eyes Messi has a far bigger impact on all round play. Assists I don't really count, key passes and final third dribbles are more important statistics for attacking players than assists.

Posts like these stagger me as you have an opinion on a league you clearly don't watch other than the odd Barca/Real Madrid game.

In fairness them two teams would finish 1 and 2 in every other league aswell bar the bundesliga.

Bayern, Barca and Real are light years ahead of every other team.
