Tony Mowbray has highlighted travelling up Friday night for the Fleetwood match was a big help to our victory as reported on CWR this morning they also said he had to use money out of his budget don't know how much but would have thought at the very least the extra income we are getting from attendances would have gone towards these over night stays and not out of the player budget

Looking at this map, there is only possibly 3 or 4 L1 clubs that would require same, (Blackpol & maybe Scunthorpe, Southend, Gillingham), everywhere else isn't so hard to get to, less than 2 1/2 hrs by coach I reckon.

I'm not being funny, but if I was earning thousands of pounds every week and I knew the budget was tight, I'd be paying for my hotel room myself.

£70-£80 for one night occasionally out of my multiple thousands per week? Hardly going to make a dent now is it!

Unfortunately this is not the real world is it. :D

So, this is my line of work as I deal with accommodation requirements of professional sports teams globally although mainly with the 92 league clubs.

An average L1 overnight stay with pre-match meal would probably come in around £2k depending on if the teams twin up in the rooms.

We are one of the teams who are more than likely to travel on the day though. The higher you get in the league pyramid, the more likely you are to stay overnight before a game with teams wishing to stay in hotels, no more than 30 mins drive from the grounds (45 mins max if London).

Simple sack Fisher with no pay off as he has been a disaster divert funds to hotel stays, win win as that disaster leaves the club and TM gets what he needs.

Great idea terry. What is sisu paying fishface to do exactly because it certainly isnt to benefit the club in any way

I'm not so sure if our players are on multiple thousands of pounds per week at the moment tbh. One or two of them possibly? But I take your point, the occasional hotel stay is affordable to them.

tbf, not entirely sure it'd be ideal prep for a game to stay at a B&B with the stag parties...

Not sure what happened to my previously reply.

I meant to say that I wasnt too sure that our players are on multiple thousands of pounds per week. One or two possibly. But I take your point that the occasional hotel stay is affordable for them.

Teams don't stay at B&Bs NW....they normally stayed in branded hotels, boutique hotels or good quality independent hotels. Places like Blackpool though, there can be an issue around some groups. You also have weddings in hotels every weekend and then probably more of an issue, you have Xmas party season in hotels, when the football season is at it's busiest time.

Teams can be superstitious so will go back to the same hotel they've used before (so long as they didn't get battered in the last game at that location and the hotel didn't cock things up operationally) but they'll be aware of potential disturbances. I can't speak for other companies but we often tell visiting clubs what else is going on that weekend (or night if it's a midweek game). Particularly with Xmas, we'll allocate a part of the hotel away from the Xmas party areas and where possible, allocate the teams their own floor of the hotel depending on the floor plan.

Think NW may have been referring to Otis' £70-£80 per night.... ??

Oh right, I get ya.

You'd be surprised but some chain hotels can go that low at weekends. I think the lowest I've seen is probably £80 BB (£90 if it's a twin) plus meal requirements on top.

Off course in London, you'd double that or even triple it in some of our properties.

Sounds like an interesting job Weeman, Whats the biggest club you've booked for?

I look after 88 of the 92 clubs and a colleague looks after the other 4 (as he has contacts at those). About 85% of clubs book through 3rd party agents whom I also manage but of those I look after direct, 4 of them are top PL clubs.

Keeps me out of trouble!

Thats the point Mowbray was making staying overnight pre-match was a better preperation than 2/3 hours on a coach it is more than that though preparing in a pro football manner is the right way to do things, if skyblueweeman is correct on it costing around £2k for a team to stay over night somewhere, thats just a 100 fans at £20 over Waggott's wish for 11000 gate. Making this public has me wondering if he has dropped it out for a reason, as for Otis's they could pay for themselves, you couldn't make that up.

If CCFC stayed over every away game what do you reckon the total bill would be ?

£2k would be average. If you've got a midweek evening game, a team might coach/train to a hotel for lunchtime, then have rooms on a day-let basis with a pre-match meal, in which case it'll be cheaper (as day lets are cheaper than overnights.

I know that we don't but if we did, simple maths would say at £2k an average...actually, scrap that, probably £1.5k average for an average L1 team, then over 23 away games, you're looking at just under £35k per season. But then you have to factor in any transport costs as well as away ties in the cups.

Also, clubs at L1/L2 level tend not to do overnighters for games against clubs located in a similar geographic area. They might even have a Pre-Match Meal at Ryton etc. I suspect that for the games against Burton and Walsall, we would've travelled on the day and maybe had a PMM at the training ground. I don't know that for sure but suspect if we are prudent with our case nowadays, that's what I'd be doing.

Edit: and just to clarify, figures mentioned are ex VAT.

There's only Walsall, Burton and perhaps Port Vale where journeys take under an hour, we all know what the M6 is like and there are a number of games around the Manchester area and another group in Yorkshire, my beef is any cost to an over night stay should not come out of the manager's budget, thats tight enough, especially as we are exceeding the wish for attendances every home game.

Fair comment Rupert. I guess that the more we get through the doors, the less impact overnight stays would have on the playing budget if the money is coming from that pot of cash.

I've booked tickets to my first game of the season, away at Swindon. Every little helps and all that!

Premier League players are horrendously spoiled with their travelm arrangements, many fly by private jet the day before a game, West Brom for instance will fly on a jet to Southampton on a Friday from Birmingham for a Saturday kick-off, when it's only a 2 hour journey by coach.

Their team coach will travel down seperately to meet them with the kit etc, and take them to the hotel, possibly having taken less overall time travelling than the players have.

Be grateful CCFC are helping to save the environment by not using jetplanes. :thinking about:

That's more the exception than the rule I'd say though LS. I've seen an increase in rail travel. With the same thing though...the team coach picks them up at their arrival point and transports them to the hotel.

And it's mainly Prem teams only who would do this...I guess the likes of Plymouth and Carlisle might have deals with regional airlines for their needs.

See it quite a lot out of BHX, Chelsea will fly upm here from STN the day before a game against any of the Midlands sides, Villa and West Brom will fly to NCL for Newcastle, Sunderland, and vice versa. Norwich also a day before flight from BHX.

Know that Arsenal charter a special train, but many seem to fly, which would be fair enough on the day, but the day before?

Only Prem, or very recently ex-prem teams dom it though, and doubt if we've done much in the way of overnight stays before a game since we got relegated from the top flight.

Remmeber us winning away at QPR one year when we only got to the ground 20 minutes before kick-off because the coach got stuck in traffic and the team had to get to Loftus Road on the tube following Tabb's knowledge of the Underground!

Adebola scored in a 1-0 win from what I remember.

Totally agree that T&E costs should ot come out of the playing budget, it wouldn't happen in the commercial world. At my last employer though, there was many a gripe from the natives when we were not allowed to spend as little as £100 on some initiative to drive the business forward yet senior managers were allowed first class travel, due to the budget being in a different pot.

I know Norwich have a few flights due to their location, Bournemouth also. And you're right, we rarely do it, even compared to other L1 teams. To be fair, it's not as though it's worked against us/for other teams. And a lot depends on the 1st team managers preferences. Most would want to be there the day before incase of any delays, regardless of mode of transport. They see time spent on coaches as wasted time as well.

That's the thing with coach travel also...Middlesbrough stayed further away from Wembley than Norwich did and were late to last seasons play off final. They got there 50 minutes before KO whilst Norwich were already on the pitch warming up. It's the risk that some clubs take.

Whilst staying at Wychwood Park in Cheshire sometime last season, I spotted the Sheffield United squad who were there from mid-morning in readiness for a night game against Crewe. They must have a generous budget as the distance from Sheffield to Crewe is not great, and the hotel is a 4 star De Vere venue within a gated community - not exactly slumming it.

Good luck to those that have the budget to do it.

The costs, whilst great to you or I, aren't actually that great to a club and despite football generally 'having a lot of money', they do push back on costs as much as they can and know exactly what they should be paying for.

There's a number of ways you could look at the cost though...if a club does spend circa £50k per annum on accommodation (which would probably be par for L1/L2 side - some will, some won't), that could pay a decent youngsters salary for the same amount.
