The reason we won today (11 Viewers)

Marc Antoine-Fortune. His age showed a lot today. Peterborough played with a real intensity first half....pressing, closing down, harassing our players on the ball and as a player who relies on holding up the ball and being given time and space, he really suffered today. In addition to this I think that with Marc on the pitch, Armstrong has to drop deeper and could no longer play on the shoulder of the last defender.

He was replaced by Jim O'Brien, who played in the hole just behind Armstrong when he came on. This substitution, allowed Armstrong to play in his most natural position, as Jim O'Brien was doing the dirty work that Fortune wont do because of his age/stamina. Another thing Jim was able to do, as a result of Fleck and Vincelots brilliance, was pick up the ball high up the pitch, running at the back four. After the first goal when City were really pushing for a second, O'Brien was picking up the ball and driving at goal with Murphy on his left, Kent on the right and Armstrong in the middle. A terrifying sight for most league one defences and as a defensive unit, Peterborough struggled with our pace and trickery going forward and inevitably they collapsed.

Ruben Lameiras. I am a fan of his technical ability on the ball, however I feel that he is, by definition, a "luxury player". There were several occasions today where he would go for a ball and then back away, or wouldn't commit to a challenge. He also struggles physically and also doesn't possess the pace to beat a player one on one, and therefore was ineffective in the first half against Peterborough's aggressiveness off the ball. This all changed second half with the introduction of Ryan Kent. I have been very critical of Ryan Kent until today. Against Swindon last weekend and against Blackpool the weekend before that he had been very wasteful with the ball and had always in my opinion done "too much". At times he thinks he has the ability to take on 5 players and smash it into the top corner...which he doesnt. However, today he was a real asset to us in the second half and, I think he has really turned a corner in that his decision making seemed to improve tenfold. He showed his ability to beat a man but he did so at the right time and seemed to release the ball when needed, rather than loosing it after trying to beat one man too many.

John Fleck. In my opinion he is playing the best football I've seen him play under Mowbray. I felt he really ran the game second half. He was instrumental in our transitional play in the second half allowing us to attack effectively in the second half. A real unsung hero today and I was disappointed he wasn't mentioned more on C+W listening on the way home. When he's on the ball I'm no longer filled with dread that we're going to give the ball away deep as I have been in past seasons and he really looks like he's enjoying himself out there distributing the ball and pulling strings as well as beating a man or two.

Special Mentions:

  • Vincelot - Great second half and chipped in with a goal.
  • Stokes - Underrated and solid at the back when defending, don't know why he came off.
  • Armstrong - 2 great goals, need to keep for the season.
  • RCC - Made some key second half saves to stop the game slipping away from us.

My Ratings

RCC - 7
Phillips - 6
Ricketts - 7
Martin - 6
Stokes - 7
Vincelot - 8
Fleck - 9
Lameiras - 5.5
Murphy - 8
Fortune - 5
Armstrong - 9

Kent - 7
O'Brien - 9
Haynes - 6

Sky Blue Army - 10 (Won us the game IMHO)

Agree with his end product...but defenders hate him...double or triple on him leaving space elsewhere. I reckon as he gets a little more mature, scores a few goals etc he will settle down to be a fabulous player

The reason we won today was simple .
First half posh looked like brazil because they had all the freedom in the world in the middle to punish us at 442 .
2nd half put the 5th man in the middle (when we play best )and made posh look like a very ordinary , unfit outfit .
We have been woeful every time barring 1 we have tried 442 ..i hate it and it doesnt suit us

Toby very good analysis and i agree totally except for murphy. Yes the second half he was better and created the chsnce for armstrong but first half he was woeful along with fortune.

id give murphy a 6.5 based on his 2nd half performance

agree with this. first half we sat deep and almost played like the away team by attacking on the break. This gave them far too much time on the ball and made them look better than they actually were. Second half we played a good 10 or 15 yards higher up and gave them absolutely no time on the ball at all just a bit surprised we waited till the second half to do it. What a game though, fantastic effort shown in the second half. Fleck was my man of the match

I thought Reuben was unfortunate to be subbed today as Murphy was shocking for 70 minutes, he only seems to come into games in the final 20 and should have been taken off ahead of Reuben.

Who would have assisted the equaliser and the winner?

Couldn't have argued if Murphy had came off today but leaving him on was a masterclass and why Mowbray is manager. In hindsight Mowbray 100% made the right decision to leave him on.

Murphy like Kent had an on/off day. Lots of errors and losing the ball BUT were vital in creating the opportunities from which we finally won. I love watching them even tho they exasperate me for half the time they on the ball.

Some headcase in a cap came down the front of block 19 just before half time got his phone out a took a picture of Murphy and shouted to Murphy "just getting a picture of the worst ever player to play for Coventry City"
He then told a woman to fuck off and a bloke with his kid that he was going to knock him out. Didn't see him in the second half unfortunately. Football really does bring out some utter cunts.

Everyone nearby laughed it off though, so it was a highlight of the first half.

Can't believe how hard people are on Murphy. He has been excellent for us. Made a big difference for us when he came on last week and looked very dangerous 2nd half today. He's the sort of player who will frustrate at times and go missing, but given we've had a lack of pace and width for years, it's great too see Murphy and Kent running at defenders the way they do. Young and naive yes, but also a breath of fresh air.

If I was there I'd have sorted him out...

I'd have anonymously texted to the matchday reporting number. He got off lightly

Assisted 2 of the 3 goals

Did he? I thought Haynes assisted Armstrongs second? Edit. Just watched the goals, Murphy did assist both Armstrong goals.

Murphy plays well in the 20 mins of every game, he's just usually poor for the other 70, probably because the game gets stretched and the opposition are too tired to double up on him.

I wish people would stop moaning about these young players we have on loan this year, they are fast and exciting even if they make mistakes, much better to watch than the slow boring football we have had over the past few seasons.

Well said. It's League 1. We either get them young and inexperienced or we don't get the talent at all.

People's expectations at this level are far too high. See comments about Reda.

Hang, on there Johnny. Because Murphy comes into games in the last 20 mins, you'd have taken him off for those last 20 mins?

No I would have put him on for the last 20-30 mins and would have started with JOB, should probably have made that clear in my earlier post.

Murphy is a young winger ,with a typical wingers attitude .
I dont know many wingers that dazzle for 90 minutes outside of the top flight atleast .
I rate him he clearly has bags of ability

Read what you just wrote! That is one of the most basic contradictions I've ever read on this blog. Jaysus - when did logic go out of fashion

Think he means he should have been on the bench instead of taken off. You can't take him off after 70 mins so you can bring him on after 70 mins cause he's only good in the last 20 mins. :D

I like Lamieras, but if you look at stats he has been substitued relatively early on far too many occasions.

Maybe better coming on rather than starting.

Yup, he's saying that on the performance he'd given till the point Lameiras went off, he deserved to be subbed more.

Can't see the confusion in that statement meself!
