Greenery has ongoing costs with upkeep that's why you see less of it and more bricks and concrete . Just look at old photos of Coventry center and parks from the 60s 70s 80s to see the changes .
I get that, but you can just pick what that greenery is more carefully so it needs less upkeep. Lots of slow-growing, evergreen plants that you should be able to leave to themselves for a number of years.

A report from Coventry City Council shows city centre footfall is dramatically lower now than it was pre-pandemic. Data from the council's Insight team and its City Metrics Monthly Report shows that footfall in town during February 2025 was just under 55 percent lower than the same month in 2019.

Shock.

I was in the City Centre, wandering around the day after Pompey game. It is really quiet right?
It’s kinda peaceful, which I guess is not what you want really.
What are the plans for all the empty/closed off bits?

I think it's being paired up with Greenland, ready for purchase

Build loads of homes and commercial stuff.

Well, somethings got to happen with it. I couldn’t see what’s going to happen with the market (cue someone posting the Coventry market advert)…but I’d hope it’s retained.
Cardiff Market is great: a mixture of the usual stalls/traders etc with some more trendy eateries. Something like that would be really good. Although plans are apparently afoot to change Cardiff market and make it more gentrified/posher.
Which is a shame but fuck all to do with Coventry so no need to worry about it!

It's being kept. Part of the plan is to have the market less hidden and separated from everything like it is now, although it sounds like it's going to be really badly cut-off during the work as things stand which they might need to do something about.

Good and closer inspection of that link gave me more info.
My next question, what’s the plan for the Ikea building?

They should have put what they've got at Fargo in the market, get a bit of life back in the place.

I'd just knock loads of stuff down and create some open spaces. Until there's actually the demand for something why have loads of old empty buildings. Just condense the bits that people want / need and open the rest up.

Yeah, bits of the Fargo might be good in the market. That’s kinda like Cardiff…a mixture of the old stalls and the trendier ones.
What happens at Fargo now? Its always seemed like a nice idea but a bit of a non starter the only times I’ve been there…which in all honesty is about 3 times. It could be a hive of activity for all I know.

Well Cathedral Lanes is supposed to do that. And half the places that are open are fast food places.
no it's not, it's exactly what it is meant to be

a load of chains and apart from 5 guys is it really "fast food"

If you want the individual carts etc they are all outside the old post office

They should do what they are doing down here.

The old Wilko store is going to be a Petticoat Lane Emporium with over 200 stalls, selling antiques, retro, craft and vintage.

There's already one in Ramsgate.

Love all that. I spent many an afternoon boring my kids to death by traipsing round such places. Rarely buying anything of course!
And that is exactly the point.

People love having these arty places, and food stalls etc because it makes the place look more upmarket and affluent.

In reality, no-one really buys anything and they shut down.

fargo is okay, it's main issue is it is not in the centre of town so some people just don't go there

Main issue is lack of nearby parking.

Main issue is lack of nearby parking.

The other issue is that they don't really seem to have any structure. My daughter used to love a couple of the places there, so I'd say I would pick her up from school and go and have a look and get a Bubble Tea. Google Maps and their Website says they are open until 5. Rock up at 4 and it's all closed up.

Biggest thing that's held it back is that they never found a way to get people up there at night. I've been to gigs at Just Dropped In and there's no one else about. Twisted Barrel is decent but you need a few spots close together to keep people there.

Not sure I would want to be about there at night.
