I reckon it depends on damage already done to sole of foot from the PF. Also, what @steve cooper said above.

This. I had the same and it healed up without surgery. Just needed time, sensible footwear and some sturdy, comfortable inner soles for the arch and heel. I have a very high instep. Used to feel like stepping on broken glass in the morning! Godden will be ok.

Didn't know he'd been there on trial, at 21 I think he should have kicked on for us by now though. Can't remember if he ever played/come on as sub?
