It seems Armybike has based his figures on Wikipedia, which can be innaccurate.

Buisness Doncaster had the population as 290K in 2010, so the 302k figure seems pretty spot on, and they could only muster just over 5,000 fans.

I was still dissapointed with our crowd though, but consistency will bring the fans back.

You're making reference to the Metropolitan Boroughs population and not that of the actual home town/city population.

No it isn't - the actual towns are tiny. The government figures are for the borough, Doncaster in the last census was 67,000 I think.

If you are going on the borough argument you need to factor in Nuneaton, Bedworth, Stratford, leamington etc - everyone in the Cv postcodes and are population I believe escalates to something ridiculous like 600 - 700,000.

Really on the fence with this one.

On the one hand we had the highest attendance in league one yesterday and league one being the key point here. It's division 3 football and when we have had all the troubles in the past 4 years with a relegation and Northampton (not to be underestimated and seems forgotten by many) it's a great attendance.

On the other hand it's our only game at the Ricoh in September on a lovely day for that matter and it's the best start for years. We have an exciting team and the best manager in the league and we work on a more fans that turn up the better basis. Self sufficient.

I guess the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

The Metropolitan Borough of Wigan is a metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester, in North West England. It is named after its largest component town and former county borough, Wigan and includes the towns and villages of Leigh, part of Ashton-in-Makerfield, Ince-in-Makerfield, Hindley, Orrell, Standish, Atherton, Tyldesley, Golborne, Lowton, Billinge, Astley, Haigh and Aspull.

So when it says 300k, it includes all these villages and towns as well in the population count.

Because the borough is effectively the West Midlands includes Birmingham at its 2.8 million.

We were separated from Warwickshire in the 70's but their population is 560,000 so our borough really is 800,000

The borough I've linked to shows the towns including Doncaster that make up the total population of the borough. Doncaster is tiny. It's like those people who look at Wikipedia that shows Wakefield at over 300,000 - it's the borough. The actual town is small.

Yeah, but we didn't have an exciting team last week and put in an inept performance. Like it or not, that does have an impact foe some fans. Had we beaten Scunthorpe last week and played exciting football, we most certainly would have had a bigger crowd on Saturday.

The fans have to be won back. That's the key point ! and will it happen with our current owners at the helm ? there are thousands who won't because of them . it was even said on the Friday night phone in, certain fans simply refuse to return until they're gone .

Agree with that I was very very close to not renewing my ST and my plan would have been to give it 5/6 games to see how this season started but I would have looked a right idiot now having enjoyed the 4 home games more than any (Gillingham game excluded) last season.

The pace and domination of Saturday was a joy to behold, yes I know it probably won't happen every week but to know we have it in our locker is fantastic!

I feel for the fans that aren't going but have yet sat through the dire crap ( the Dennis Wise half a season excluded & anyone that got to see Wilson & Clarke at 6F) of the last decade!

I honestly don't believe that it has a great deal to do with the owners at the moment. Whilst the current form and standard of football is admittedly encouraging, it's not yet sustained enough to entice a whole swathe of support back to the Ricoh. The fans have been let down and disappointed over decades and a run of eight games, however positive, isn't yet sustained enough. If the team replicate this form over the next 8, 16, 24 games then I think we will see attendances gradually creeping up, with the opportunity for them to hit 15k+ towards the back end of the season. In fact, if a top 2 challenge is maintained then we could see 20k in the last few games.

You have also got to factor in the impact of the new stadium and the general curiosity, as our average at highfield road the 2-3 seasons before in the 2nd tier were around 14-15k, so in some respects an element (not all of it) is the natural drop back down to pre-Ricoh attendance s.

Prior to Saturday, it was 4 points from 4 games. 2 away defeats, an unconvincing home draw and one good performance (Burton away). Some would have seen that as a return to type, hence the impact on the attendance. Those fluctuations will continue until the team are solidly top 6 over 20+ games.

The attendance will only move significantly come December/January if we are sitting in a similar position. if we get promoted it will be higher but not a major jump.

It wasn't and they really came out fighting. They didn't give us any time on the ball at all and were snapping at our heels from the off. We never gave up and our fighting spirit was tremendous and fan power that night spurred the team to get the equaliser. The atmosphere for me was better than the Gillingham game. Tremendous.

I live in Bath. There are thousands go to see the Rugby that wouldn't dream of attending a footy match. They're not sports fans. They just like the atmosphere around Rugby games. You get a lot more women go.

Our problem was that we missed a penalty and found a keeper in great form. The fans who actually turned up would recognise this.
