2 players for every position = a proper squad for L1 (1 Viewer)

Having watched a lot of L1 at Brentford, I've concluded that to be competitive you need two players for every position. Right now we have:

GK: Murphy, Dunn

RB: Christie (ok he's injured), Clarke

CB x 2: Wood, Cameron, Malaga, William E

LB: Hussey, Brown (will slot in anywhere in the back 4, maybe CB if Wood covers LB)

RM: Baker, Bell

CM x 2: Fleck, Deegan, Thomas

LM: Sheff, Kilbane

CF: Ball, Elliot

ST: Cody, ROD

So by this reckoning, we are only one short - either Jennings signs as the fourth midfielder, or Brown plays defensive midfield as he did last year for Oldham and we sign a new left back to cover Hussey (or another left winger if Kilbane is to cover Hussey).

For the first time in a while I am optimistic.

And another thing, with this slug of 7-8 new signings, has anyone else noticed the anti-SISU moaning has subsided!

True, we are lightweight up top. You can only consider we have two genuine strikers if you consider ROD to be a genuine striker - I say he deserves a go in L1, but only as he may warrant the benefit of the doubt.

If we gacn offload ROD, as AT I'm sure would like, we would be up for another striker.

Yes but there is one big problm with this squad, whicjh although it look good on paper a lot of the retained squad have such poor injury records

GK: Murphy, Dunn

RB: Christie (ok he's injured), Clarke - was also out injured most of last season

CB x 2: Wood, Cameron, Malaga, William E Cameron currently injured wood out for a lot of last season also

LB: Hussey, Brown (will slot in anywhere in the back 4, maybe CB if Wood covers LB) hussey was injured for a large part of the previous season

RM: Baker, Bell - a pair of sick notes, bell is currently injured

CM x 2: Fleck, Deegan, Thomas - Deegan when not teeting is on the sick bed

LM: Sheff, Kilbane Sheff has a tendency to pick pu injuries

CF: Ball, Elliot elliot although wasn't here last season is injured now and has a poor injury record

ST: Cody, ROD Cody injured currently, missed most of last season, with a fit Cody we may have stayed up.

3 goalkeepers for me please, it's too specialised to take any chances, apart from that 2 for every position sounds better than it has for some time.

We've got Burge. Just depends if he's ready for the step up if need be. I don't know enough about the lad to make a judgement, but oggy must like him having taken him to Scotland, and I trust oggys judgement!

Good optimistic outlook then!!!

really hope we dont playt he 4231 formation! where will we fit all the strikers? and it's not attacking at all!

How isnt it? When we have the ball we would have 4 players going forward and have width. Playing any combination of 4-4-2 doesnt give you as many options attacking wise, as last season proved.

Yeah it could work:

Murphy
Hussey Wood Malaga Clarke
Deegan Thomas
McSheffrey Fleck Baker
McDonald

I've always tended to have 4-2-3-1 - I think with Cody it would work too. Fleck playing CAM role and putting through balls for Cody to run onto and hopefully score from. You've got the flexibility then to either take of the CAM for a 2nd striker, or for a last ditch effort, take off the 2nd CM and throw an extra body upfront then. Gives that extra body in the middle too, allowing the wingers to play the ball inside and get the return.

All looks so nice and simple in text...

Seems like a good play off squad not as good as Sheffield utd or mk dons

My understanding was that Sheffield United's squad had been massacred due to the financial fair play rules - and that, quite frankly, they were only challenging at all due to Ched Evans, who won't be playing for a while. As for MK Dons, constantly ending up in the lower 2 play-off slots so I'm not convinced either. I see no team where I'd expect to lose - unlike last season where I couldn't find teams I'd expect to beat.
