tbh, I wasn't expecting to be, given where we are. It's always going to be young potential, or journeyman - even allowing for level, McNulty and Kelly weren't overly exciting (McNulty mixed, Kelly at the wrong team), and I wasn't exactly moved by Vincenti. O'Hare's been the exception all through recent years in a way, as I really didn't expect us to get him.
Last year I was buzzed at O'Hare, Walker and Hamer.

This year Gyokeres could be good, Bright could be a wildcard. The rest are very meh.

I guess his point is the income we’re getting is a fair bit more this coming season than the one just gone and to show for it we have made 2 loans permanent and signed 3 freebies.

True, I forgot Walker! He's still a div below, potential signing, though.

Yeah but the young potential is players we had last season. No mystery or excitement there. Best we’ve got is Bright. And now we’ve run out of money it seems.

We’ll see but this transfer window is shaping up to be our worst under Robins.

I think we're just going to have to agree to disagree. We just value keepers differently.

Really when I'm getting at though I guess is that players that are going to be a mainstay of our team for 5+ years or generate a significant resale value are those that we should be targeting. 25 years old and already Championship quality Walton is that player 31 year old questionable Moore isn't. Same with 31 year old Waghorn.

This type of recruitment just gives you more work to do a year or two (or three) down the line without putting you in a better financial position. Last year we did really well by bringing in Sheaf, Hamer and Walker, who all fit that model, then filling the squad with loans in CB, LWB & CM. Gyokeres and maybe Bright could be examples of us doing it right this year.

I think the philosophy at this level should be 2/3 top quality players each year in the younger age bracket so they give you that longevity/profit even if it means Shipley or Allen or whoever plays more than you'd like them to. With the loans you keep your head above water and then in 3/4 years you have a squad that can challenge at the right end of the division.

It just feels like we're bringing in players who will keep us lower mid-table Championship, which is obviously better than we've had for many years, but nothing to say that we might eventually turn ourselves into contenders.

We have one of the youngest teams in the Championship. We need a couple of experienced players. McFadz, James and Kelly’s leadership was indispensable to our campaign last year and we need to add to that. Hopefully, Moore and Waghorn will provide that.

We plan on signing 2-4 new players, two of which being loanees. I’m sure we’ll pick up a few younger player in our typical target age range. Mind you, we’ve still signed Bright and Gyo who are both 23 and have plenty of potential upside.

Realistically, the club needs to improve incrementally. Boddy (and Robins?) has said this. We survived last year, this year we need to consolidate and hopefully players develop more before we can that extra step.

To be fair, although I'm not overly enthused by the recruitment so far either, we can't make that statement yet. Not when our business hasn't been completed yet and the season hasn't started.

We’re barely half way through our recruitment and the outlook in the transfer market is affecting all but the very elite clubs. Signing Gyokeres and Waghorn I think is a very good return. Will withhold judgement on Moore and as for Bright I don’t think we sign him if finances were better. Very much a wild card, but he’s got potential upside if he’s switched on.

We’re not done yet, but our recruitment has been pretty good so far.

Mañana mañana. When they start training. When the marketing team are back. When they get back from Spain. When the season starts. When the transfer window closes.

I love the optimism but be real. When the rumours and the noises from the club and the CT and the evidence before our eyes says it’s a duck I’m not holding my breath for a golden eagle.

I agree we need to prove incrementally but you do that by signing a couple of quality players imo. I think our recruitment at the moment very much shouts 'standing still'

Especially when there were some quality free agents available.

I'm not particularly optimistic based on signings so far. I haven't hidden that fact either on this thread or others.

But having said that I won't shoot myself in the foot by making rash statements or predictions before all our business has been completed as we have no idea what's coming. With potentially up to four signings on their way the overall quality of the team could be completely transformed.

Latest CT article it’s down to three. 1 perm and 2 loan.

And TBF I haven’t predicted anything. Just said that’s how it’s shaping up. If we’ve saved all our business until the end and pull half a squad of championship players out the bag then fair enough.

To be fair we didn't sign Walker until after the season started last year so there is still time for one that gets me going.

We’re not done with our recruitment so judgement at this point is flawed.

Take Bright for example, he’s probably going to be an X-factor signing or a bust. Waghorn has been a solid, 10 goal season for long while before last season. I don’t know much about Moore, but the consensus at Sheffield U was that he was v good in their L1 season and performed well against Man U in the Prem.

I think the windows are hard to compare under Robins without the context of the fall and rise of the club during that time and the associated increases in budget that comes with promotion. In L2, despite relegation, we were still a big fish in a small pond. That's 3 of the 5 seasons.

I suppose the 2nd season in L1 is perhaps most comparable to this year, as it's the only other time we've played consecutive seasons in the same division under Robins.

At this point we'd signed:

1 July 2019CM England Jamie Allen England Burton AlbionUndisclosed[25]
1 July 2019CM England Daniel Bartlett England SouthamptonFree transfer[26]
1 July 2019RB England Fankaty Dabo England ChelseaFree transfer[27]
1 July 2019LM Martinique Wesley Jobello France Gazélec AjaccioUndisclosed[28]
1 July 2019LW Curaçao Gervane Kastaneer Netherlands NAC BredaUndisclosed[29]
1 July 2019GK Slovakia Marko Maroši England Doncaster RoversFree transfer[30]
1 July 2019CB England Kyle McFadzean England Burton AlbionFree transfer[31]
1 July 2019CB England Josh Pask England West Ham UnitedFree transfer[32]
1 July 2019CB Scotland Michael Rose Scotland Ayr UnitedFree transfer[33]
1 July 2019GK England Ben Wilson England Bradford CityFree transfer[34]

Allen and McFadzean were seen as solid signings and people were happy we'd finally replaced Burge with Marosi. Dabo was exciting but was replacing Sterling who'd had a good season. It wasn't particularly exciting then either, aside from some Football Manager style anticipation at our new foreign signings. We'd also just sold Chaplin which, while many were not unhappy to see him go, left us looking light up front.

Robins pulled it all out the bag by adding Godden on a permanent using the Chaplin sale money and added O'Hare and Walsh on loan in August and September.

I guess my point is that when you survive in a division, the improvements are more incremental than when you jump up a division, and that the best deals always happen later in the window when the Prem trickle down starts to happen.

It’s a good point, I remember going into the promotion season thinking we were weaker than the previous season.

Fair I hadn't read that.

I think this window was always likely to be the most difficult under Robins' tenure. With Championship clubs all fishing from the same pool following the introduction of the points based system for signing EU based players, it's made the prospect of us bringing in bright young talent from lower leagues was made far more challenging. Couple that with the lack of available finances due to Covid, transfer instalments due and bonuses for avoiding relegation, missing out on primary targets was more likely than ever.

I don't think it's necessarily shaping up to be the worst, but there are some obvious concerns. Bright and Moore being the two obvious ones in my opinion. However, it's not all doom and gloom. I think we can be encouraged by Sheaf and Gyokeres coming back and whilst Waghorn doesn't necessarily fit the model his experience will be invaluable next season.

Given we've had previous success in the loan market I think it's safe to assume that Robins and Badlan will also have identified exciting talent that PL clubs will be more than happy to loan to us as well.

Good points about why we’ve found it hard. Brexit, COVID, hadn’t considered the bonuses.

I really hope we’re underselling what we’ve got up our sleeve. I think we’re 4 first teamers and probably 6/7 total away from what we need. If we get four or five quality loans in then while I’ll be disappointed they aren’t our players I’ll be happy enough.

Expecting this window as every window can't go perfect this was slow starting missed out on James to start and doesn't feel like a normal robins planned window and more secretive on clubs part.
Players in waghorn average,
Sheaf good prospect after a reasonable loan season.
Viktor same as sheaf promising.
Moore gets match fit an ok sighning.
Bright ,could be the best of the lot.
Defense? million dollar question ❓

Waghorn average? If he can replicate what he’s done at other clubs in the not so distant past here he’ll be our best forward.

I was very fearful the recruitment that summer was poor. Considering five players we had the season before went to Championship clubs (Sterling, Bright, Chaplin, Bayliss and Thomas) it seemed a huge ask to take the club forward. As others have said the late recruitment of Godden, O'Hare and Walsh was absolutely enormous for us. Hopefully this summer will be similar and our best recruitment is still to come.

We don’t know what we’ve got, staying in the Championship gets you £6.5m, we’ve also got crowds this year and cheaper overheads playing at home rather than the Blues. Really depends how much the owners want to push really.

You can make more than an educated guess we don’t have another £3m to spend
