If we'd signed Ostigaard and James but consequently had to retain Biamou and Bakayoko as our back up strikers then I really would feel we've been treading water.

We've reached somewhere near our budget ceiling and we're still transitioning from a L1 club to a Championship - it was always going to be tight, regardless of COVID, and not as exciting as the rapid ascent we've got used to in the last 3 seasons. I think Hyam will look much better at RCB too so if we are able to get a LCB in and 1 as cover then all good there too.

Next summer I expect our remaining older players like Godden, Kelly and McFadzean will unsentimentally get moved on with the remaining deadwood we haven't been able to shift like Mason, Jobello, Hilsner. But Rose, Hyam, Sheaf, Gyokeres, Walker etc will all have 2 seasons of Championship football under their belts and will start to become the core of the team that we build around rather than the fill ins around key players.

1 or 2 of Jones, Eccles, Burroughs, Howley will also break through this season and feel like new signings. With the disrupted pre-season and players like Bright, Godden and Jones who will take several weeks to get up to speed, I expect the season to have a similiar trajectory as the last and we'll be a much better team by the end of the season than at the start.

Just to confirm we’re down a loan CB and a loan CM from last season, right?

We’re expected to sign maybe two loans and a perm before the window ends, right?

We’ll hopefully get more minutes from Kelly this season and Eccles looks ready to step up, right? Ok, it’s unlucky they’re both injured going into the season but as others have said it’s not realistic to sign someone as cover for short term injuries.

We don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes, what deals have been all but confirmed etc, right?

That said we need at least another CB but we’re strongly linked to getting one in on loan…

Oh and half the league are on their arses and haven’t signed anyone. People are entitled to their opinions but I really think there is no need to worry too much.

Definitely something going on with the football side. I can’t see why sisu would sign a ricoh deal, spend money doing the badges and dressing rooms then taking out of the playing budget though. But then there is no reason for the management to go against the model.

Just can’t put my finger on what it is.

I made a thread on this a few weeks back.

Robins missed out on James Walsh Collins etc all for the sake of a grand or 2 a week.

When asking the owners to trust him with a little bit of extra budget after everything hes done hes met with a firm no. Leading to him being rightly pissed off after what hes done for us 🤷‍♂️

100%.

Our forward options are much improved. With Godden’s recent injury woes, we really did need 2 strikers this window. Without making the signings, we’d be left with Walker as a lone option.

Something that is understated so far is that (so far) we’ve kept all our best players that are contracted to us. Players like Hamer, COH et al will surely progress as players and we’ve got some good young players coming through too.

We’ve got 2-3 signings to make this window and you’d imagine we’ll sign a centre back and centre midfielder to plug our most obvious gaps.

Personally, I would say our transfer window has been decent.

SISU ultimately don’t care what league we are in

He played 21 games for Luton last season and they wanted to resign him. I doubt they’d be trying to sign Hyam or Mcfazdean

Don't think it's necessarily about pure talent, it's more about lack of pace and fit for the team. They've taken a look and decided against it.

That’s exactly right we are two loan players down on last season. The gnashing of teeth is strange but understandable

What also hasn’t been taken into account is young players who now have a year of championship experience

Dabo
Rose
Hyam
Sheaf
Hamer
Ohare
Walker

They are not new signings but they are all players who will have progressed

On the start of last season we need a Cb, on the team from January we need a Cb and Cm

Sure we could have added these first but I firmly believe you move for players when they are available.

The links with Walsh and james and Paterson may have been genuine and Paterson is clearly still within a club. I will save my gnashing until the end of the window even though I completely agree replacement for osti will be felt in the first few games

Yep that's my view. I don't disagree we are short but it's been a weird window up and down the league's, I'll save judgement for the end of the window. And happily join the bandwagon should nobody else come in. (Which clearly won't happen!)

As it stands:

GK = no change in quality
RWB = no change in quality
CB = worse than last season
LWB = Maatsen unproven at championship level potentially worse than last season
DCM = worse than last season
ACM = an extra option but Bright is unproven at this level
ST = improved quality and depth.

Obviously there's time for a few more signings.

Let's not forget that McCallum was unproven at this level this time last year. Don't know enough about Maatsen to say with certainty either way but we'll have to wait and see.

CB clearly the biggest concern at the moment. I'd love to sign another midfielder too but don't think it's a desperate need.

Has there been any actual evidence we were in for Walsh? Collins and James at least had strong links. I never actually saw credible sources link Walsh.

Even IF what you say is true, am I the only one who doesn't really care? Saw we missed out on these players by £2k each a week. Considering James was a 3 year deal at Bristol that's around £300k more than we are comfortable paying over the course of the contract? That's not a small amount? £200k in the case of Collins. It's all very well saying just a small amount more a week, but £500k has never been particularly small for Coventry in the last few years?

It also doesn't really stack up to me, if it is literally those fine margins wouldn't you move on say Allen? Who is probably on 2/3k a week? Which then allows you to get in the CM that you want? Also how do we know that Bristol and Cardiff wouldn't have just added on 2k to whatever we paid?

We scored 6 in a final meaningless game. Over the prior 45 only one team scoring less finished in the top 12 - scoring has been an issue and lack of quality forwards has been identified as a big problem clearly

We can discuss stats as much as we want but we’ve lost possibly our best centre back from last season and, as it stands, not replaced them meaning we’re relying on a guy to play LCB who performed pretty poorly there for long periods last season, our middle CB is now 35 and has always been prone to errors plus our RCB who has has major injury problems and only get into the side at the very tail end of the season when a lot of our opponents had nothing to play for.

It’s a concern.
James also not replaced as someone mentioned last season we had to adapt s’more negative approach as we were leaking goals....clearly hasn’t been addressed yet

It’s more likely to be wages

Leaking goals was also an issue and we are now looking at a back 3 of fadz hyam rose with Maatsen who’s an unknown

I believe he chose gyokeres over james - potential over experience.

Pretty sure more budget has been agreed

Any evidence at all for what you are asserting?

Don’t understand how it can be Gyokeres over James, they don’t play the same position nor would command a similar wage? I don’t believe he chose for that to happen

I had mixed feelings about Maatsen after the Wolves game. I was very impressed with how high he was prepared to get up the pitch but also felt he was too quick to turn back and play the easy pass backwards once he was in those positions. Hopefully that's a mixture of rustiness, not knowing his teammates, confidence and standard of opposition and he will get better and better with more games.

Its also possibly influenced by progress on potential loans. There’s also the possibility that neither party went in assuming he’d sign but he provided cover for us and we provided somewhere for him to have a preseason near his home.

It’s clear James is a better player and more important to a team than Gyokeres, Robins didn’t choose to that happen, budget or the players personal preferences dictated.

Thing is we have a budget and I am pleased that we are sticking to it instead of being in bidding wars for the likes of Walsh and James.

Why pay over the odds when we are very clearly in a situation which benefits clubs not players.

Wages will soon tumble as many many players will be without clubs as squad sizes are trimmed.

Let’s see how we get on before grumbling about our signings or non signings Robins has added to the squad to me compared to last season it looks better on paper but time will tell, lost a couple in Matty James and Sam McCallum not fussed over either to be honest. We also have youngsters banging loudly on the door Howley although just 17 looks an unexpected bonus Jack Burroughs and Eccles unfortunate with his injury but will be back. JJ back too hopefully another bonus, then theres Bright ?? If we do get Clarke-Salter a left sided CB so thumbs up on that and I still think there might be another CB added but we have got to get some out first I reckon throughout August there will be a lot of player movement permanents and loans in the EFL. There are doubters on here but imo our starting squad this season is better than last and with a years experience under its belt and fingers crossed we don’t have the what was major injury issues as we had last season.

Yes and although Luton wanted him to sign again he didn't suggesting he was not happy with their reduced terms or length of contract?

We had a look and probably felt what he wanted wasnt good value for a 35 year old. We can do better in the loan market.

I think in the harsh world of pro. football Cranie was back-up if things didn’t go to plan Looks like Clarke-Salter is to be added to the squad and I have a gut feeling there could be another before the window shuts, we just didn’t need him any longer.

When you actually look at each club in the championship this season, how many can you actually say have strengthened apart from the 3 promoted clubs (which they desperately need to).

We havnt done bad standing still squad wise may actually be progress this year!? Id say alot of teams are in the mire financially, theres alot of players released players with no new contract.
