Was at the Coventry United game yesterday and got talking to one of their coaches who told me one of our academy based kids teams (under 9s) played at Manchester City recently and lost 57-2, wow!! Have tried to find out if this is true, hope not. Has anyone on here heard anything ?

I would be disappointed if it is true. I would hope a match involving young kids a would have been stopped prematurely if the was such a mismatch. I actually played in such a match (rugby) when I was a kid - the game was stopped and the coaches mixed the teams up to produce more balanced sides.

Done a bit of digging. A Birmingham kids team (under 8s) definitely played Manchester City kids recently and the score was 30-2 I know two local youngsters who played for Brum and a Coventry academy group played Man. City too and apparently got hammered, but don't know the exact score. The problem is youngsters who still put stockings out for Santa and believe in the tooth fairy are being contracted to Acadamies and not allowed to play anywhere else and this is driven by ambitious parents who have nothing more than £ signs in their eyes and all you end up with is disappointed youngsters.

But the real sad thing is some twat is counting the goals !!

Sucks the soul out completely when there's 8 year old kids signing a contract saying if they injure themselves playing cricket or rugby or something they'll be kicked out of the academy.

I didn't realise that the rules were as strict (and stupid) as that. It really is disgraceful and the FA need to something about it quickly

FA wouldn't do anything, won't be allowed to by the big clubs. It's a Government issue, modern day slavery is a bit of an issue at the moment. How they can allow primary school children sign documents with restricted practices is beyond me. These kids need protection even from their own starry eyed parents.

Same at ccfc though, if you play for the acadamy you cannot play with your mates on a Sunday morning for your local team. Considering that 99% of them will never play pro football at any level they miss out on a lot of childhood memories.
It is true that these decisions are made for the child by parents who think they have the next Messi.

My grandson plays under 8s and I have to say at the moment one of the better players, but certainly no Llionel Messi. A lad in his team has just signed these academy forms and will only play for the academy, he's 8 ffs! He's also an older lad birthdate wise, 9 months older than my grandson so physically more powerful. Doesn't make him technically a better player though and will get caught up size wise. Unfortunately his dad has stardom in his eyes, but then some get through. I think these restrictions in these contracts are ridiculous.

My little 'un hits a mean tennis ball too, I would say good for his age but seems if he signed academy forms will not be allowed to play tennis, pathetic.

We could learn an awful lot from the AYSO set up in the states. Their grass roots system is really great.

I took my youngest son out of the CCFC shadow academy as he wasn't enjoying it due to the clickyness that had obviously been set by the parents standards.

I wanted him to enjoy football and that wasn't going to happen there. ........Not beause he was not as good as the others just the atmosphere etc was not right for kids at 10/11 years old

Firstly, If any kids manager let a team score 57 goals against anyone then he should be charged by the FA. It would be morally wrong to allow it to happen and if it has then he should have the book thrown at him.
Secondly, academies are one of the worst things wrong with English football. Kids get taken on at 8 and never allowed to play with their mates. They are built up to be something special by the clubs and then dropped like a stone when the club change their minds at 15 or 16. Loads of lads drop out of the academy system as they find that there is more to be gained from playing on a sunday with their mates. Academies can stifle players by making them play in too rigid a way and stopping them from learning skills that they can get to try elsewhere.
Thirdly, Academies are hell bent on signing anyone they think might have even the slightest chance of doing anything to ensure that they get compo if kids get picked up by any of the bigger clubs. Even kids that are let go can still earn the academy compo if they get picked up by someone else.
Fourthly, Academies end up sticking with kids to try to justify their investment. There are loads of lads aged 14/15/16 that play on sundays and are far better than what the academies have but they wont get signed as questions will be asked as to why money has been wasted for 7 or 8 years on kids that aren't as good.
Finally, The shadow squads. In my opinion, they have been set up to increase funds for the academies. Parents have to pay for their kids to go to the shadow squad and get an hour's coaching a week and the occasional match in the hope that they'll have their kids picked up when in reality the kids will get picked up if they stand out anyhow.

dragging it back out but finally spoke to my neighbor he says they dont track score at that level but they scored somewhere around 30 and our lads scored at least 5 as his lad scored 3 of them. still sounds harsh to let it get that out of hand at U9's

I made enquiries too, they played three 25 minute sessions and unfortunately lost the first session 29-0.

Not strictly true. Under 9s Played 4x20 minutes. And 2 games at the same time. So in full that's 8 periods of 6 aside. There were goals flying in both ends. Man City have a 4.5 million pound academy with unlimited resources. My lad loves every minute representing the clubs academy, were they decent, yes they were and we all said we would be disappointed to go there and them not to be half good. The 9s have been competitive in all fixtures thorough this season. Having a great time pusb..
