A Spender or Thrifty ? (1 Viewer)

As there are a couple of threads currently on about gambling it got me thinking about something that cropped up recently. My son loves to bet on the football, horses, and dogs, while I just have a few quid on football matches. He thinks nothing of putting thirty quid on a horse or dog,and if it comes up he'll then stick his winnings on the next race and so on. He laughs at me putting three quid on a football bet, calling me Scrooge but I'm careful with money in the bookies, and do it more out of interest to make it more fun etc.A mate in the pub also puts fifty quid on a bet which would have me sweating ! By the way both are always skint ! So are you thrifty or a spendthrift ?

I don't bet apart from the national. I think the old adage of 'only the bookies ever win' is certainly true in the betting world

I'm cautious, but never ever save.

I am very free with my money, buying presents and stuff, so never, ever mean, but wouldn't have £30 bet on anything unless I was really, really confident of whatever it was paying out.

My uncle would put £300 on a dog, no problem.

I avoid slot machines and casino's and hardly ever bet.

Guess I would describe myself as sensible. Refuse to have a credit card, so always stay in the black.

Think the most I have put on a horse is £25, but that was because I had a dream about this horse (a horse I had never even heard of before and had no idea it was running the next day) and it won. I was very, very confident of it winning, otherwise I wouldn't have had the bet.

Can easily blow my money on something though and then just live hand to mouth.

I am with you, I'd happily throw in 10 25p or 50p bets that are a bit random. Do it for the fun more than anything.

Don't think I'd ever dream of putting silly money on nowadays!

Same as me Otis I'm that bloke who will give you his last penny and buy friends and family things, but hate the thought of spending my hard earned cash on chance or luck.
I love a bet and a go on the lottery but keep it sensible. My son came close to a right hook when he borrowed cash but I found out it went in the bookies,he kept away for a while !
By the way had any lucid dreams lately on winning horses ?

No! I wish.

The horse was so random. Gem Bien it was called and it hadn't run for a couple of months, so there is no way I just picked up on it from previous days or races. Had a dream and the horse's name just came into my head.

Looked the next morning and lo and behold Gem Bien was running.

Even then the cautious side of me made me only bet on it each way.

Won £180 on it.

Similar really, don't like to waste money if I cannot see an outcome to it. I have a silly bet here and there but nothing more than a couple of quid, don't get any thrill off it really. I have a decent savings account but have a real weakness to shiney technology gadgets so can spend some money on that. Yes they are expensive but I am not taking food out of my kids mouth to do it. If I have it (after bills) then I have earned the right to spend it!

I give myself a fiver a week for betting. £3 on a Saturday. £2 on the Sunday fixtures.

I chase 8-10 fold accumulators in the hope they'll win me anything between £500-£2000 off 50p and £1 bets.

Could never slap down £10+ on a single bet. But will spend a tenner on The National / Gold Cup or on the Masters / Open.

i do £2 accumulators sat and sun most weeks
i bet up to £15 on certian 'big' boxing fights once or twice a year
i used to have £50 on cov promotion until this season, cuz the odds were so short

have never ever won a thing gambling
and never more than a tenner on the lottery

pointless i suppose

as for spending, i can spend like the best of them, bought a 65 inch tv for the mrs, could have bought 55 inch, that sort of thing but i also save a lot too, for things like cars, tv's , holidays(dont do loans or hp) so it all evens itself out, i live well and im comfortable.
i few years ago i was on my ass, but to be honest, easy come easy go, if i got skint again tomorrow i quess i would have to cope like i did before

About dreams, I often dream about someone I haven't seen for ages, and lo and behold I bump in to them not long after. My late father once dreamt like you the night before a big race, think it was the National, about some obscure horse that he'd never ever heard about, and it was that clear and lucid as it won easily in the dream,he knew it was going to win the race the next day. But he wasn't a gambler on horses,so never had a flutter on it,and yes you've guessed the rest it won.My mum gave him loads of stick as it was an outsider and would have won him a fair bit of cash !

Yeah, well that's the thing. I hardly ever bet at all, but if something pops up in a dream I have a go on it, because otherwise I feel I might live to regret it forever and a day.

My biggest bet was £25 on Alan Curbishley to be the next city manager after him being spotted at the Ricoh by somebody I knew and somebody losely connected to the club confirming it waste of money can't think who got the job might have been Bothroyd at a guess.

I'm glad you don't put that type of money down every time you hear those rumours!

It was a very good source who is still connected to the club now but he messed up there. My friend had £100 on Ian Holloway becoming the next burnley manager as he had been told that he was certain to get it, should have asked his next door neighbour who was a current player:facepalm:

I am neither a spender nor thrifty. I have always earned more than I spend because I don't want most of the crap that is on sale. If I want it I find myself in the queue to pay and only then look at the price. If I don't want it it could be a fantastic bargain but I'm still not buying. Yet I have never consciously saved anything. The words, "I can't afford it" or "I'm skint", have never left my mouth. As a result in my 50s I have quietly amassed a small fortune.

I start off with £500 to gamble each year ... Normally about £10 a time , I do get very good tips from the kids my son goes to school with as a lot of their parents have horses in training..occasionally I will put a few hundred on the football if I think it's outrageous odds ... The biggest bet I had was on a horse called cotai glory which is owned by someone I went to Royal ascot with .. I had £500 each way at 7-1 in the flying Childers ... ..youtube it and it will put you off gambling for a long time ... I felt sick for a week afterwards .. As a lot of mates lost a lot of money...

But apart from that I am really tight .. I do by good food ..but if I can save money anywhere I do ..I shop in loads of different places and have no brand loyalty .and I am not impressed by labels ..
