Absolutely disgusted (1 Viewer)

After reading a few posts on here this morning i am absolutely disgusted with the attitude of some of my fellow posters. How on earth can we as a city support this Wasps takeover? How hypocritical of us to openly accept franchise sport, something we fought so voiciferously to oppose. It is absolutely disgusting what has happened to OUR home, something i will never agree with or even crack a smile about.

We all stood on the hill to protest about a 35 mile relocation, Wasps fans have got more than double that to get here, are we forgetting that? Northampton Saints, Leicester Tigers and Worcester are all nearby, 2 of them far bigger clubs than Wasps. There will be no midlands fanbase and i doubt after 3 games only a select few will travel up from london. no fans, empty stadium and i for one will not accept them trying to reach out into my community.

To be quite honest it doesnt matter who is to blame for the takeover by Wasps, some people on here believe it is a good thing. Our city has its own rugby club, a rugby club we should all at least armchair support. I am dissapointed with the council, they arent acting in the best interests of the elecorate and not acting in the best interests of the city. They should focus more time in supporting the clubs they already have, rather than inviting franchise teams here. Im not a fan of sisu by any stretch of the imagination, actually on the contrary but they dont make decisions on behalf of the city. Stupid hedge fund people can afford to play games. I expected better from my local authority.

No i agree with that, but im not a massive fan of rugby, at all. Chasing the egg just doesnt do it for me. But i tell you something Otis, im actually considering going up to the Butts to show my support for my local rugby team, just to show them that their city is behind them

very well written and heart felt piece I agree it is a shame that people have very selective memories about how they felt with us being ripped from our city and sent to northampton, but people love thier sport and will do whatever they want. I never went to sixfields but if ccfc decided to build their own stadium n pull out the ricoh now id go! as a ccfc fan you get torn apart by all involved and the fans thoughts and consideration are thought of last but I dont think that will ever change. still I will be there tomorrow cheering my boys on at Crewe, why do we do it we must be mad haha

It is quite disheartenting that some fans don't seem to be that concerned about the franchising. I find that strange to be honest.

I'm thinking of going up too. I like watching the Six Nations and the World Cup, but have never ever been to a game and don't have any interest in club rugby, but I am seriously considering going up to a Cov game or 2 now.

Be brilliant if Cov got loads of local backing and ended up in the Aviva Premiership.

Be amazing if CCFC fans went down to the Butts to support the team. Be even better if there was a higher attendance than Wasps get for their first game.

I've said it on another thread somewhere Otis, I actually find watching COV a much better afternoon's entertainment, but still only go to the odd game, as CCFC has had me since I was a youngster.....

Although I dont like the idea of Wasps sharing/owning the Ricoh we are in shit street. Luckily Wasps only play 16 home games a season so need a partner to make the ground move more viable. If we can get the share off the Higgs we get 50% of Acl and puts us on a firm footing. We are never going to build a new stadium we have this option and need to grab it.
The Wasps rep on the radio mentioned that they are looking to do deals on tickets that promote both Wasps and Cov rugby so in essence if Wasps arent playing an incentive is there to watch Cov. Might not be all doom and gloom after all.

Good post, Christon.

I really hope that somehow Sisu do get their hands on the Higgs share. I don't want Wasps here, but now it's happened, so we need to make the most of it and if we could get joint ownership somehow that would be an excellent result for Coventry City.

From what people are saying it does seem very unlikely, but Sisu's lawyers and financial experts need to be going over this with a fine tooth comb.

My guess is also, that if they fail to get the Higgs share they will probably appeal and contest that in court too.

So Wasps coming to Cov might actually benefit Cov Rugby if thousands like you start going to games.

Were you one of the 16000 who went to the Gillingham game and not the next home game?

It further alienate and divide this crumbling city. I have been to every home game funnily enough. However there is not a chance on this planet that i will ever even consider supporting any form of franchising sport. Leave that to the yanks

Do you know what the sad thing about Cov Rugby is that it will never get to the premiership.

The RU premiership is becoming an old boys network and soon there will be no relegation or promotion into there league. There are plans for this to be implemented in a way to follow the NFL model.

Premiership Rugby Union would probably not be as excited to watch as the Football premiership where the door is open for any club in the league to enter the league on merit. Now that's the beauty of it compared to Rugby.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. I can't be part of this anymore.

Different spin to the argument, most people associated with Cov Rugby said it will have NO affect on the club. Different days rugby being played. Hardcore support of 1,500 wont leave and might benefit in the long run.

I don't agree with the move contrary to belief but if onyl certain fans/posters on here made more of stance about ccfc last summer instead of actually justifying it.

I remember a little cafe on the corner. The sarnies were all home made and the coffee weren't bad.
It still fills me with sadness when I remember popping in there for a cuppa an a chat. Now all you get are fucking off shore, branded corporations with their bastard franchising an "have a nice day" spiel. Cunts. And that ' cream cafe mocha with caramel topping to go Bollox' - what the fuck is that?

Wasps playing at the Ricoh will have no affect on CovRFC or it's attendences and in fact could benefit the club. Cov had the chance years ago to go down the professional route the likes of Leicester, Northampton, Worcester and Wasps have done they decided not to, bad decision in my opinion. So they are where they are now also they have been virtually broke for some time and very much hand to mouth now, by alineing itself to Wasps could introduce better players to the club, better results, increase it's gates and more solvent. You can't compare the RU with football clubs are run on different levels, for Cov to get to the top level it would take a real sugar daddy to finance it and I'm doubtful they want to.

Aligning itself with Wasps? Oh you mean taking all their young players on loan and becoming a feeder club? A club playing it its own city playing as a feeder club to a franchise? That doesnt sit right with me. We should go down and support them, even for a game to show that the city is behind them. Pump ticket money into the club.

It is quite disheartenting that some fans don't seem to be that concerned about the franchising. I find that strange to be honest.

I do agree with you however, we should look at the Coventry City of today. The historic club was placed into administration and doesn't exist any more - the current club is nothing to do with the history. If it wasn't for the Football League allowing SISU (via Otium) to acquire the club's branding rights then CCFC wouldn't exist.

Having worked for a franchisor back in the 90s the basis of a franchise is allowing a third party to use your branding... So there is an argument that the Coventry City you're supporting is just as much a 'franchise' as (allegedly) Wasps. Perhaps more so...

We should all try and take out the sentiment and look at the facts. SISU have had the club for years and failed to do a deal to acquire ACL - or the agreed half they were entitled to. Publicly they don't want to do a deal so where does CCC and Higgs go? They sell to someone that is willing to do a deal.... Simple. Don't blame them - blame SISU for messing about for so long.

I don't think that JS fully understands the damage she has done to the club by her actions. Season ticket sales are way below where they should be (given that we're back at the Ricoh) and that indicates to me some real long-term damage that will take years to recover. If the team don't start improving results then the future looks very bleak.

I think what Starbucks have done has given people a mild addiction to caffeine. The coffee is ridiculously strong but people (certainly those working in Manchester City Centre) just have to go every morning.

Noone thinks SISU are angels in this, far from it. but a hedge fund isnt my local authority and cannot make decsions that effect the place where i live. They can play games but i find it pathetic that CCC have stooped that low. They should have the interests of the electorate at heart, something they dont.

Ill say it again, AnnLucas - A club shoul not be ripped from its community

She has done exactly that, agreed for a club to be ripped from its community. There is no defending that.

The deeper point is the sanctimonious bleating about franchising per se. Has franchising been here for decades? Yes. Has it destroyed the village shop, post office and corner cafe, even some local hospitals? Yes. Can we turn the clock back? No.
But when 'our football' is messed with we come over all high and mighty and you'd think every other poster was a pulpit professional.
Give over.

Probably right, First tried a Starbucks in the US way back when, and before I new what they were as an organisation, and still remember buzzing round (no pun intended) for the rest of the day.

It's still better for my daughter to be doing this than drinking thunderbird in the local park I suppose!

That's an interesting observation. Caffeine is certainly a drug and there is the problem of mild withdrawal, weekend headaches, etc.

I hate what franchinsing per se has done. It is not the root cause of all the ills in society, of course not, but as you point out it undermines local businesses. You go to any town in the country and the high streets all look the same - you could be anywhere. I personally don't like it - large coproatoins and chains care nothing for the local community - as we all know it's about the money, money money.

Anyway, time to dismount from my high horse to luncheon on my home made bread and locally sourced pate!
