Ok... everyone desperate for this to happen....
Is it because;
1 - it's a signing....?
2 - he's decent and an upgrade on what we have?
3 - both?

Is he actually any good!??....

If we do lose Sheaf this window then I think we'd all be a lot happier with Browne already on the books to play with Eccles and Torp.

He can’t be massive wages. Doug you would hope also would understand we can’t sign a bunch of 22 year olds all with resale potential and no experience. Fadz and Kelly gone is the soul of our side for the last 5 years. We need experience which is so evident in games that we lack
Preston have offered him a club record contract so he won’t be cheap.

He wouldn't be viewed as a resale, he would be viewed as a much needed player that would bring leadership and drive a standard that our young players need. Especially when trying to see out games his experience of championship football will be welcomed.
He wouldn’t no because he’s 29.

I’m just saying DK isn’t going to overpay. At most he would match our highest earners I think.

Preston top earner is on 19k a week according to a mate of mine who's a massive PNE fan.

My concern is that he is a ready made replacement for Sheaf and an ideal captain. That in itself is not a bad thing but it rings alarms bells to.me that Sheaf is off

If we lose Sheaf then it's potentially not as bad as it sounds . Browne who would be a fantastic replacement in on a free with around another £15M to spend on strengthening the rest of the squad.

Not necessarily. With the losses of Fadz, Moore, Kelly, O'hare and possibly bidwell we have lost pretty much all of our experienced players. We have a very young squad, some of whom have hardly any championship experience. If Sheaf goes he will be replaced and it won't be by Browne. If we sign him, he's being signed to play alongside Sheaf imo.

If we are to go 4-3-3 as rumoured then we need ideally 6 central midfielders. Sheaf, Eccles, Torp, Allen. This leaves 2 spaces. Browne and Rudoni would fit this.

Palmer over Allen for me, but yeah fair enough. Still not convinced that midfield has the quality we need to retain the ball and hurt teams.

Not sure in a 3 id go for Palmer. His off the ball work isnt nearly consistent enough for that role

Well I wouldn’t go Allen either TBH. He’s far too lightweight in a deeper role. IMO like Palmer he’s at his best in a 10 role.

Just feel quality in midfield let us down last season, particularly ball retention. I’d like to see someone in there who can get their foot on the ball and dictate the pace of the game, or at least like Hamer can quickly spring attacks by moving the ball quickly and accurate long range passing. Maybe that’s Browne, I don’t know too much about him.

Browne is a high energy midfielder, he’s got a really good engine on him, good on the ball, good tackler, gets stuck in, aggressive, great passer, and a leader on the pitch, can play deep, advanced and just centrally, also RWB and RM, basically I’d say he is the Gus replacement,

Almost as if we don’t need to dogmatically stick to one setup.

You’d really want a specialist 10 if we’re playing a midfield 3, even if the initial intention is to play a flatter 3.

A midfield 3 of:
Sheaf
Eccles/Torp (depending on if he can show the form we saw glimpses of)
Browne

That would be up there as one of the best in the league for me and I’d be very happy with it.

If we can get Browne over the line it would be a great signal of intent. The only thing letting us down is Defence and GK now so as long as we recruit smartly then there’s no reason we shouldn’t be pushing for promotion.

Allen and Palmer can be moved on, we need better if we're genuinely going for promotion.

Kelly and O'hare already gone (or going)

Torp looks decent in spells, but still untested over the longterm.

So I'd say we need more than 2 new players in there, even allowing for the fact that Lats and EMC could fill in if required.

And keeping hold of Sheaf is not a given

Rudoni, Allen, Palmer would all be able to play the 10 role. Torp and Browne probably could too. Would give some tactical versatility.

Not sure if the wage bill will allow but I’d keep Allen as emergency back up in CM. Experienced player who wouldn’t kick up a major fuss being down the pecking order.

If we have Sheaf, Browne, Eccles, Rudoni, Torp, Palmer - the 4 already here have had history of injuries with us (maybe harsh to include Torp but he was out twice in half a season) so Allen would probably still get minutes.

If we want real depth we probably need 7 options for those 3 spots.

If we do sign Browne then I expect at least one of our current CMs will be moved out. He’s an every-week starter and won’t be signing with us to be rotated in and out the side.

Sheaf with funds from a sale reinvested elsewhere perhaps?

My concern with this scenario is a Browne or a Sheaf getting injured with nobody similar to replace him.
Yes, but on the other hand I don’t think we’re going to have any player as valuable as Sheaf or Browne playing as a backup or rotational option. They’ll be expecting to play every week.
