... Who thinks our first XI is pretty good?

It seems very doom and gloom at the moment, a mile away from the optimism after promotion.

Yes we've lost McNulty and he needs replacing.

We have had a lot of players missing during pre season which has made our friendly performances and results look poor but I think we have a decent team:

JCH*

Jones - Andreu - Bayliss

Doyle - Agogo

Brown - Davies - Willis - Sterling

Burge

*hopefully Chaplin

I think that looks decent. Could also bring Grimmer in to push Sterling to right wing and have Bayliss more central.

Jones and Andreu are going to be like new signings and will score and make plenty in this league.

Squad looks ok to me. Yes we need a poacher/finisher but otherwise no glaring weak links and cover in most areas. We should certainly break more quickly than we did last year and I think we have greater variety of impact player on the bench. Not sure we are good enough for promotion this season but we should avoid a relegation battle comfortably.

Yes I agree however I'm disappointed Robins hasn't brought a forward in yet days away from the opener.

I'm most excited about Andreu and Bayliss going forward as they looked a class above at West Brom. We all know what Jones can do so yeah I'm quietly confident we can do well!

I think Bayliss more central and Sterling RW is our best bet, though the squad is so flexible. I could see a decent team for almost any setup the opposition might have (barring us playing two up front right now but hopefully that'll be sorted soon).

I'm really excited for the season to start. Lots of negative nancys on here saying 17th is a good season or whatever. Bollocks to that. We've got some of the best midfielders and defenders in the division and who knows maybe end up with a GK or ST whose up there as well.

I'm pretty sure I'd have that the other way round and put Burge in goal rather than up front to be honest.

I think our team looks alright. Yeah, we need someone else in and to be fair Robins knows that too and he is trying to get in Chaplin or someone else. It's worse when a manager doesn't believe there is an issue. I'm not too worried just yet.

I'm coming round to that too. Sterling would offer us more natural width and even though Bayliss did a good job when being asked to play on the right is obviously a central player and it would be better for us and him for him to play there.

If we did play Sterling RW then it also means Grimmer has a bit of cover as well when defending whereas last season when we had Bayliss or Ponticelli out there he was left exposed a fair bit.

That's not taking into consideration Allisani also.

Portsmouth fans have told us that Chaplin is ineffective if played as a lone striker. If you play him , who is going to win the aerial clearances in that formation.....the opposition defence.

It's a very good team other than the attack.

However, it might sound silly, but I think JCH will be far better suited to this league.

If Bayliss plays centrally i do wonder where Andreu will shift to (or what formation would then be required to have both in play). It's certainly good to have these problems instead of looking at certain positions thinking there's literally nobody who can play there.

we have a good squad. kept what was strong in league 2 and added proven players in leaue 1. its a good mix

we just need 1 striker imo and squad is complete.

Playing Bayliss in the centre with only one defensive midfielder - the new guy Ogogo, who is barely fit or Doyle (getting on a bit) leaves us a bit weak defensively. That is partly why Robins not unreasonably, played him on the right wing, leaving Doyle/ Kelly to do the gruntwork

I'm not too concerned with the striker situation at the moment hopefully get Chaplin in before the transfer deadline, it took McNulty a while to get going last season and we were still winning games, I think Andreu will chip in with a few goals to get us up and running early on.

I think Allessani will add something going forward particularly as the season goes on. I must admit though I am very fearful that we could still lose Bayliss before next Thursday.

I think our full strength team is one we ate yet to see in pre-season... Ogogo Injured, jones not playing... Bayliss and Sterling on england duty. Stick them in any team i this division and they make a difference I’d say.

So on Paper it looks good! Let’s see how it plays

I'm not convinced JCH will ever be prolific. I'd like to see two up front: JCH and Ponticelli or Biamou and Ponticelli.
Sooner or later we have to start plying Ponticelli regularly otherwise he'll be gone.

Absolutely agree.
Only JCH or Biamou will win anything in the air

Please don’t berate me but..

I think JCH and/or Biamou can offer something as we’ve seen last season. Not just scoring but bringing McNulty (sic) on to the ball. Ponticelli is a young man on a long contract so he’s going nowhere unless it suits MR. I think we are going to be so different from last season but time will tell!

Yes we seem o have recruited well and have people coming back from injury. We are in fairly good shape but obviously need to plug a gap left by McNulty. I would rather be patient about this and get the right man. If needs be shore up with a couple of decent loans.

Ponticelli gone? He’s nowhere near good enough yet in this league. He may get signed by a non league club but why would he?
