Yeah I was out the other week and it felt a lot less likely to kick off than it did 15 years ago when I was out more than twice a week. It's grim down the Burges but it always has beenUnless I’m just a pissed up oblivious approaching middle age man. I’ve literally seen trouble in town about 5 times in 18 years. Admittedly I’m not out 3 nights a week these days like I used to be though.
I was a boxer myself. I also worked the doors before the days of having to be polite to idiots. I found boxing learns respect. You would see people come in change very quickly. It gave many a different outlook in life. It even changed me from a cheeky twat to a respectful twat. And it kept me in amazing shape. That was a bonus.My son does charity boxing and he's got a fight in December. Best thing he's ever done as it channels his aggression, and he trains hard in the gym too. I found when I started playing rugby it kept me out of trouble, sport definitely helps I reckon. Plus seeing a psychologist regularly too !

I think the length of the sentence should also be governed by the size of the knife you carry. Any carrying of a knife in such circumstances, a sentence, but a machete, a much, much longer sentence imposed.

Yes that's all well and good saying all that but at what point should people start taking responsibility for their own actions? Going to a cinema mob handed with machetes? The problem we also have these days is to many do gooders making excuses for them. Carrying a knife should be a minimum of 10 years in prison imo.
And don't these cuts affect everybody? Funnily enough when I finish work at 2 today I've no plans to put a tracksuit and hoody on and go tooled up with a machete up town.
You do what works. We don’t know enough about why people end up like this for really targeted intervention. Best we can do is fund support services and make a dent in it. Worked in Glasgow.
No kid carrying a knife is thinking about getting caught. They’re either thinking about protection in their immediate environment or they’re well into a criminal lifestyle already. Harsh sentencing is great for the feels of everyone else, but does little to actually solve the problem.

i appreciate the argument is a lot more nuanced than harsher sentences and there is more that needs to be done in conjunction.
Totally agree with the Scottish model of making it a public health issue which you mentioned but that took a decade to start showing results.
Possession of a firearm is pretty much guaranteed custodial and I think most of us would be horrified if it wasn't but more people are dying through knives than guns.

I've pondered on writing a book but as I write football articles I've been more interested in that. To keep it as short as I can I had great parents, and there was no violence growing up in the house etc. I played football from junior school right till aged about 17. Then stopped and started drinking regularly, and got involved in fights in pubs. The psychologist I saw after all the sentences I did said after a few sessions, I swapped sport and playing often and using up aggression properly, to using it in pubs and clubs. But I used to have fights in prison so couldnt use alcohol as an excuse. I now think first, and am convinced if you change your thinking, you can change your life without sounding corny.
