Anyone been to a City game with conflicting hopes of the outcome? (1 Viewer)

Weird question I know but - bare with me

As a 29 year old - I am too young to remember or have gone to the 1987 Cup Final. Since really getting into the team in about 1989/1990, I have patiently and excitedly waited for 23 years to see my beloved team have their big day out at Wembley. now, with it potentially only a couple of games away from happening, I have just today learnt that on the day of the JPT final I will be on a 22 hour flight back from Australia. (Before anyone says it, no I cant really help the day Im flying as im going over to see one of my closest friends who moved over there a couple of years ago, for his 30th Birthday. Unless of course I ask him to change the date of his birthday which, believe me, I will be doing).

Im going to the Preston game and whilst I do obviously still want us to win - I have to say the thought of being stuck on a flight while the team I love play their first game at Wembley for 26 years is genuinely gut wrenching. has anyone else had similar conflicting hopes on the outcome of a Coventry game?

Kind of. There was an evening cup game (I think the West Ham one fairly recently) where I felt horrendously ill. When they scored a late winner which prevented another 30 mins of extra time I can't say I wasn't relieved.

If its the game I think you are talking about - I think I was in New York trying to find a bar that would be showing it (it was on Sky, 2007?).

Literally making myself sound like some kind of international Jet Setter - Im not.

Donny home, in a way, I wanted us to lose to put us out of our misery, but I wanted us to win more to gives hope going into the S'hampton game!

absolutely no doubt I still want us to make it to the final, and win it. Just gonna be so hard to take, being on that plane while I know I should be in Wembley celebrating with the 30,000 odd Cov fans! I even made sure I dragged myself up to the Burton Albion, with the other 5999 brave souls, to make sure I had tickets for previous rounds, hopefully meaning I got priority should we have made it to the final.

I will definately watch it when I get home - but no chance will I be able to stop myself looking up the result before hand!

You should consider yourself lucky. I missed the FA Cup Final becuase I had a club to run. I was gutted but watched it live on the big screen!

Id be gutted not having been at the cup final in 1987, but being in the city when while it was on would have softened that blow. this time. im going to be on a plane man! a plane! during the game!

granted though im not really trying to compare the JPT final to the FA Cup final!!

Yea it was under Ian Dowie, Jay Tabb scored for us and Ben Turner made a horrendous error to gift West Ham a goal in the 90th minute. I think it was the round after we had knocked Man Utd out of the cup

I didn't want to, but I'd already got the ticket. Beforehand I played football after work with the notion that fresh air would perk me up a bit. Really didn't work.

Whats meant to be is meant to be ,there is some sychronicity required here but I reckon you'll be flying over West London on your journey home as a victorious SBA spills out of Wembley ,thats a unique sight none of us others will get.

I've known a few occasions when under failing managers, the City have won to prolong the manager's stay when it was clear we needed a change. Trying to balance the short term buzz of winning against the long term need for a new manager.

not quite wanted them to lose but my son had a bet on christie being last goal scorer against walsall @40-1 and i reckon he was the only fan who didn't jump up and cheer when baker scored number 5

There was one time, Wolves away about four five years ago. I was supposed to see Rangers that weekend but for some reason that fell through. My mate told me out of the blue that he got me a ticket for the game, only problem is that it was in the Wolves end. we were sat right at the end next to a wall so there was no quick getaway, Mifsud scored after about thirty seconds and Wolves ended up winning 2-1. Last minute we have a corner and my mate is nudging me saying 'if this goes in, were jumping up', I was relieved when the corner came in and the Wolves keeper caught the ball.

Personally, i think any fan who wants his team to lose is not a true fan, but i wasnt allowed to go to the Chelsea game and all my mates were going. I was very annoyed and they came home with faces like smacked arses, so that somewhat cheered me up. Wasn't so pleased about the result though

I had a similar thing to that against Milwall in the year we had king, had him to score twice and cov to win 2-1. he hit the post in the last minute and I almost died. I didnt know what I wanted to happen.

Anyone who bets on the City to win is jinxing them.
Anyone who bets on the City to win hasn't looked at our record over the past 20 years.
Betting on the City to lose often gives you cash to drown sorrows.

When Elliott Ward was our penalty taker I used to put a few quid on him for first scorer which paid off a few times, bookies never seemed to cotton on that he was our nominated taker. What a time to be alive.

I've got the exact same problem. I'm due to be in New York that week and have spent £1,325 of which only about £100 is refundable. Really don't know what I'll do if we get to the final, can't afford to throw away that sort of money but equally can't stand the thought of missing the big day out at Wembley.

Before we played Leeds in the FA Cup semi final in 87 we had booked a romantic long weekend to Paris. When we found out the match would be on the Sunday we cancelled our booking so we wouldn't miss it and re-booked it for travelling out on the
Monday morning after the game and coming back on the Thursday.

Never thought about the match might be a draw and the replay would have been on the Wednesday night - my heart was in my mouth when it looked like it could go that way - didnt want to lose any more money on our holiday but no way could we have missed the game. Didn't happen anyway but you know what I mean! City till I die!

P.S. Paris was s*** anyway and would never go again!

Nightmare isnt it mate! when are you due to fly back? the big problem for me is im literally in the air while the game is going on! which I cant handle........so Im currently looking into if there is a possibility to move my flight to the day before. if so, Id land in London at 6.30am on the morning of the final! so if anyone sees a drunk, jet lagged, generaly spaced out man who looks like he has been drinking since 7am in the morning at the final.........come say hi to me.

is that an option for you, changing flight dates...........or is the final right smack bang in the middle of your trip? If so, just find a bar to watch it in New York mate. It will be gutting but that kind of money, you cant change it! plus that would be quite the experience, watching City at Wembley from the Big Apple!

She doesn't know the date of the final... I'll see what the area final brings before I think about mentioning it to her... Don't want to upset the apple cart until absolutely necessary.
