As it stands I’d be channelling my inner Kegan with that squad because the defence looks shaky. Hopefully we can add three or four defenders as Robins has implied and either keep the big players or get enough from their sale to replace them.

Bidwell isn’t an upgrade in our system to McCallum or Maatsen. We are a solid LCB short.

Gyok is incredible at pulling the defensive line to ribbons so we need people in the box who can pounce and finish. Whether blisterfeet is the best in the hole I don’t know, maybe Godden sits deep alongside O’Hare and runs in?

Overall, if we keep what we’ve got we need left defenders and a goal scoring mid. That Grimsby lad (Mc something or other) seemed to have a bit about him.

McAtee, the brother of the Man City lad.

Bidwell has played as a LWB in promotion chasing teams for the last several seasons. Give the man a chance. He wasn’t even bad when he played last season

Of course Gyökeres is overall a far better striker.
You're clueless if you think that's not the case.

I disagree with you. Doesn’t make me clueless. People are allowed to see things different from you.

I like Gyko but he’s young and one and good season so far compared to Godden who’s been around over a number of seasons and consistently delivered goals. For me he head and shoulders above Gyko for finishing.

Speaking of McCallum, what’s happening with him? Looks like he’s staying at Norwich by the looks of it

Gyökeres is one of a few of our players who has the potential to play in the Premier League. He's a far superior player overall.
At his age, Godden was moving from Ebbsfleet to Stevenage.

Team for the first fixture
Moore
Dabo Hyam Mcfadzean Rose Bidwell
Sheaf Hamer
O'Hare Palmer
Gyokeres
Subs Wilson. Kelly. Waghorn. Godden. Walker. Eccles. Allen.

Good enough to beat the Mackems?
Not convinced with Bidwell having to play that role but no real alternative. Hope he can surprise me. If we can play through Cal and Palmer we should create enough chances to win.

I know it was only a pre season game and I know it was only florist but the way we knock the ball around and the fact we put 2 reasonably strong sides out each half bodes well , I don't think we actually give ourselves enough credit to how good we are.
Sunderland will be boyant and have a full house behind them but I think we'll be far too good for them

Long term I agree but in the here and now, for me Godden is a better player and finisher and if both are fully fit and play one up too, robins picks godden.

Absolutely no way does Robins pick Godden over Gyok for the 1 up front

People getting lost in an argument that I don’t even think exists. Both talented players who trump one another in different parts of the game. If they could play together for long enough we’d have our best front line in years.

Defence is a massive concern for me at the moment. Fadz only getting older, Dabo was inconsistent last year (hoping that changes) and Bidwell is a bench player at best for us. If we keep the big 3 then defo 2 full back and a CB required. Hyam really is becoming a solid CB and Rose improved 2nd half the season. We conceded way too many goals down our right hand side last season, especially at home.
I'd be more than happy with a similar season with flirting with the playoffs.
’Hyam is becoming a solid CB’ and ’we conceded too many goals down our right hand side last season, especially at home’. Given Hyam played on the right hand side of three centre backs for most of last season there is an inconsistency in there somewhere. Need 3/4 additions at the back if we are to challenge at the top end of the table.

The defence as shown leaked a shitload of goals last season and would do so again, particularly against big bruiser c/f's

Interesting that Maatsen has not gone gone on tour with Chelsea. It was thought he would get his opportunities this season. Not so apparently and he remains at home and also not going abroad, they are keeping him. Could this mean a loan again? And could this mean back here to help with a promotion challenge. TBF he does start every game with us. Could be what Robins is waiting on.

Chelsea want to sell him. What promotion challenge?

RE Dabo, he is routinely a standout performer whenever he gets a run of games and up to full match fitness. His patchy form always corresponds with coming back from injury. If he stays fit he’s a quality RWB at this level.

Thanks for saving me posting exactly this. Agree 100%

Simon Moore

Fankaty Dabo / Dominic Hyam / Kyle McFadzean / Jake Bidwell

Ben Sheaf / Gustavo Hamer

Kasey Palmer / Viktor Gyokeres / Matt Godden / Callum O'Hare
I would play this on the assumption that Dabo + Bidwell turn into prime Roberto Carlos. & Hyam + McFadzean turn into Virgil Van Djik. If that happens, I think we could win the league.

Some may say that this is unrealistic and that my assumptions are stupid. But if you don't shoot for the moon you'll never find yourself amongst the stars.

What i read was he could of been sold to Dortmond or some club like that (can't remember) but Chelsea pulled the plug on it and want to further develop his talents. Sounds like a season long loan to me....

Nah, player and club couldn’t agree terms, Chelsea didn’t pull the plug on anything or they would have taken him on tour with them if he was part of the plans…

MR says 3 maybe 4 at the back, so by the time we kick off the defense plus goalkeeper could be very different.
I'm happy upfront as God is as lethal as ever ( we just need him fit ) VG should have improved after a season and training/playing with Sweden.

KW in the Forest game looks up for saving his career, Tavares could be a big hit or nothing let's see. Waghorn looks massive, have you seen those legs? That front 5 could well be all we need if we stop conceding goals.

The right changes at the back and we could surprise a few. We are not far away already, just inconsistent so the new back line could make all the difference, if MR gets the back line sorted we will be a challenge for any team.

Let them worry about us.

If we could have only played Wallace or Ferguson which would it have been?
