Watching back the highlights, that really was a cracking knock under pressure by Harry Brook. He broke the back of the total. Crawley worth a mention, too.
What an awful way to get out though

Y'see I think he's getting forgotten a bit unfairly because of that. He scores his runs being an offensive batter and of course he's going to get out that way, but he just top-scored in the 2nd innings of an Ashes Test win-deserves some credit. I also just watched Botham's Ashes back (BBC doc), and he reminded me of him a bit!

they'll probably drop Woakes. poor bloke never gets a run in the team

Nah, Robinson dropped surely, beefing up the tail helped during this test as much as the wickets. The big call will be Foakes but think we all know the likely answer

Yer, they can't risk Robinson. Tongue's had his rest and looked the most threatening before Wood/Woakes came in. He also has pace. So they might bring back Jimmy for Broad and Tongue for Robinson?? The whole world knows they should play Foakes...

3 great matches so far.

They need to keep Broad in for Warner, who think they will play Anderson and then leave him out at the Oval and Anderson can retire at Old Trafford.

Keep Broad. He's actually bowling well and is due a haul.
No-one bowled a lot of overs due to the low scores so pick the best attack for the conditions. I would do Anderson for Robinson for this next Test. Rest Robinson and it's Anderson's home wicket.
But another flattish, one paced wicket then it may be better to play Tongue over Anderson.

Another option might have been to bring Foakes in for Robinson and let Bairstow have the next test purely as a batsman. Of course it's not going to happen. Anderson will be playing at Old Trafford.

Personally I would drop Bairstow for Foakes, but it's not going to happen.

But if we win the next test and the Oval is a decider, would they want to drop Jimmy for that?

Personally, I would as he's been probably the least effective bowler for England this series, but I feel the selectors would put sentiment and hoping Jimmy can have some glorious swansong than picking those most worthy of the place.

I doub this will be Jimmy's final test series anyway, especially if he doesn't get to 700 wickets.

Traditional Oval wickets don't really suit Jimmy. Not much swing, more pace and bounce.
Not disagreeing with you, just wonder whether the selectors would pick him for the final test on name and potential legacy instead of someone more suited. They shouldn't, but cricket selectors have a history of picking on reputation and which county you play for.

Questionable forecast for the match up here, due to be some rain every day. Managed to get my hands on a couple of day 5 tickets, would be shit for it to be a rain-induced draw.

Anderson in for Robinson, Ali stays at 3

Understandable, Robinson has been carrying a knock...Anderson on home soil. Would have been interesting to see Tongue in the mix though, he was great at Lord's

I honestly don’t get why they name the side so early, they should name it at the toss like they do, they now have two days to choose their team.

I presume it all ties in with stokes/McCullum giving players clarity so they’re fully prepared. Also guessing they’re pretty sure what the pitch will be like

Happy enough with team* Could’ve argued for Tongue if it was another ground but hopefully Jimmy at home will deliver

*out of squad. Like many others I’d personally have been tempted to rest/drop Bairstow for Foakes

they could name it to the players but insist they keep it quiet and any training would involve a couple of others to muddy the water.

Hopefully the wicket gives Anderson something. Another pitch like the others and it's not a great selection.
Ali at 3 is a T20 pick. If your number 3 is normally batting at 7 or 8 and really doesn't have the potential to make big runs then it's a stupid option. What realistically is Ali's run ceiling? His technique does seem to make him new ball fodder.

Said before, I’d be tempted to have Stokes coming in at 3 especially if he’s not bowling but Ali’s up for it so worth a crack

I’ll take that, was a good day’s cricket. Hopefully limit them to less than 330, was a good pitch for them. Kudos to Bairstow, brilliant catch that led to a great atmosphere in the afternoon.
