Attendances (1 Viewer)

I am a bit worried for next season that even with the superb brand of AT footbal we will never really command regular ground straining attendances. Lets not kid ourselves even at Highfield Road some premier league gates were as low as 11,000 - 13,000 for eg Wimbledon, Fulham, Bolton etc. Considering our Coventry population (300,000 plus) our take up of season tickets, at best 10,000, is abysmal when compared to Norwich, Derby, Leicester, Forest etc. Why is this ??

I think it's alot to do with the fact we have done nothing for the past 10 seasons and the football being poor to watch. People have just become disallusioned with the club, though hopefully that will change a bit with AT now in charge.
I don't think people are realistically expecting promotion, we just want to see the club have some ambition and be competitive. To be looking at how many points off the top 6 we are and not how many points we are above the bottom 3.

All four of the teams you mentioned, despite sufferring some equally hard times, have also had some success during ou long drought. Football is more popular now with the middle classes than it ever was, so if we can generate a period of sustained success and entertainment, crowds will flock. A new stadium surge saw us attracting 20k+ every week which all new grounds get and that was when we needed to capitalise. Unfortunately now we need to entice them back with a reason other than abject failure.

CovScott has it right for me. I know lots of people who have just got fed-up of having the micky taken because they are City supporters. Although many have stopped going most I believe still look for the result and do not support anyone else. So if AT can maintain the attractive football of recent weeks and we stay in the top half people will come back. It got so bad recently that my nephew who supported the City for 30 years has stopped going. To many false dawns I'm affraid.

This is something that has really baffled me with Coventry. what have Leicester done in the past ten years? relegated to Div 1 and still pulled bigger crowds than we did. Till Sven and the foriegn money came in they were way down the league and looking like relegation contenders but still pulled more through the gates than we did. Like wise Derby (apart from one awful trip to premiership) they have been as sh*te as us this year but i bet their average gate was over 22,000. Forest have in the last few seasons been building and knocking on the doors of the play off's regularly so i can sort of understand where their fan base comes from but even in the post Clough relegation period more would turn up to watch them than the Sky Blues. I really dont know what the answer is but i have always found the many Cov fans very fickle some of whom are my friends & family.
Perhaps what we have seen from AT's Sky Blues may be the footballing revolution we need to change the mind set of the whole city towards our beloved club. That and a load of cash!! PUSB

Leicester were in the Premier League in the past 10 years and the season that they won promotion from League 1 would have drawn crowds as well as their play off run last year but have had equally grim times to us in the intervening period. I think the main thing is that there is a strong identification with the city and club for Leicester, Nottingham Forest and Derby which there isn't for Coventry. The most important factor of all is the lack of any push towards promotion in the past 10 years, had we even made the play-offs in the past 5 years there would be a belief that promotion is doable. Aside from that there has been the quality of football but also a severe lack of quality players who've played for Coventry over the past 10 years especially attacking players.

I dont necessarily think it is about the last 10 years either, We have always been a team who have not achieved much (apart from that day) so we do not have history and therefore do not have that 'ancestral' following i.e my grandad, dad, brothers watched city so i will type of approach that other teams have.

Also when we have a good run and the crowd turns up for a good game City generally disapoint, and so they go away again.
