Backup RB or Experienced CB (1 Viewer)

I worry our first choice centre backs aren't consistently at the level we need. I think all three of them have potential but would like us to spend as much as we can afford on one, who is also experienced to help us get over the line this season. Joe Worrall would be perfect if we could afford him.

Happy enough to make do with Lati as back up right back and hope that MVE is fit as much as possible. If MVE gets injured I can imagine we'd try and change the way we build up which at the moment is quite dependent on MVE's footballing ability and athleticism.

With Eccles, Burroughs and Lats, plus even Sakamoto I’d be tempted to risk no RB and hope we could muddle through until Jan is anything serious happened to MvE.

Still not convinced by any of the CBs and the whole back line is very young, plus probably the midfield especially if Sheaf goes and we sign a couple of younger players. Would feel better with a young Fadz type organiser and leader in there.

With Wright and Sheaf leaving I reckon we'll sign another 8 players before the window closes. Let's hope all those new players can gel.

Experienced CB for me, that’s probably the difference between us making playoffs and not last season. Too many dropped points from winning/drawing positions that probably don’t happen if someone like McFadz could cope in a 4-2-3-1.

That’s a higher priority than a backup to RB, MVE has proven himself to be fit and Lati is capable there. Hopefully, with all the talent we have going forward, we won’t be as reliant on MVE as an attacking outlet.

Definitely an experienced CB.

Lati at CB in a 2 scares me (he was good in a 3 never a 2) whereas he was dependable at RB until he was carrying an injury

Get the CM sorted first, that's far more important for us to get right. Lats isn't great in either position, so I'd prefer a proper experienced CB, if we need to, we have Eccles + others who can fill in at RB.

Full agree, a proper defensive minded CM in, and to be honest that would due me if no one else leaves. I believe Thomas, Binks and Kitching have high potential and need to play games to realise it. Hopefully with us attacking more this season they can smooth out the mistakes and reach their levels.

Ideally an RCB who could also play RB. But if pushed, I’d choose CB. If Thomas gets injured, we only have Lati and I’m not convinced at all by him playing CB in a back four. I think he’d get targeted. At RB it seems like we have more options, even if none perfect.

I'm watching too much American football - first reaction was running back or cornerback 😄

Could obvs do with both in an ideal world but I’d go backup RB first over CB as I think we’re much weaker when Van Ewijk doesn’t play.

This is now the conundrum. Sell Sheaf and fund all the remaining positions or stick with what we have and hope Viktor and Hamer get sold.

Tricky one tbh, he does get injured a fair bit but he’s clearly great for us, not irreplaceable but it’d be hard to get someone as good as him to bed in quickly. Genuinely unsure what the best thing to do is.

I think the squad is almost in danger of becoming too bloated, certainly if we signed a RB and and a CB (I know the thread title asks either/or).

Who's going to drop out of the squad and be happy about it? I think if you leave it as is then you have Lati on the bench to cover RB and CB, plus Kitching and Dasilva.

I don't see us having 4 defensive subs on the bench so one of those (or the new signing) is going to get left out when at full strength. If we sign a RB and CB then two are going to be left out.

So like a normal squad then. 2 players for each position = 22. 20 spaces available on a match day. All teams have this issue and why these teams dont break down fitness wise come March

We have three young, decent CBs and one very decent RB.

If we get injuries, where don't we have cover ?

CB, only Kitch and Lati whereas at RB, we have Eccles, Burroughs and Lati.

Square pegs in round holes but a short term fix.

Think the strong head at CB will be more useful over the season but a RB would certainly give us peace of mind.

Yes but we currently have a squad of 25, so two more and we're potentially overstocked.

Who are you counting tho in the 25?

It's the club's first team squad, not trying to catch you out or anything.

The only one in there who is unlikely to get any game time is Howley.

Possibly Burroughs, though I think with no more signings he would get some minutes. (And it depends whether MR really wants 3 senior keepers)

Should we sign the players we want Burroughs and the fellow youngsters wont be needed in the 22-25 squad though

The real question is whether Lati is a better right back than Dasilva is left back.I believe he is. So I’d rather have a lb
I am not sure that is the most important question. For me it's is Bidwell better than van Ewijk. I know most won't agree but I think van Ewijk is our best player and Bidwell our weakest potential starter.

Solid defensive CM who’s tidy on the ball sort of hybrid of a 6 and an 8
Young dynamic RB in the mold of BNC,
Experienced CB to help the 4 we have develop but also be a leader at the back
