Personally I think it was both but started with the need to reduce the club's wage bill.
At the time the decisions were being made we were still at Sixfields with the budgets that set plus we had not actually sold Wilson. There was a need to drive down costs. Baker was probably the highest earner left.
SP has a preference/need for Baker's type of player and brought in JOB as a replacement at less cost to fill that need. Once that was done Baker had to go, and had to be "encouraged" that his future lay elsewhere.
As it turned out it hasn't been a bad move for Baker who seems to be making a name for himself with the MK Dons fans
