Banning Rugby Tackling (2 Viewers)

Have seen that they want to ban rugby tackling in schools. When I was at school I had no idea about Rugby as it was just football and tennis for me, but when we did it in PE it was all about absolutely hammering each other.

If they really want to prevent concussion give them access to head protectors, it is going to end up like American Football with padding.

Imagine letting the poor kids play british bulldog now (it got banned when I was at school) or playing football with a netball (the solid type balls) and getting a whack in the face with one of those.

With regards to head protection NFL are looking at getting rid of the helmets as there’s some evidence that they increase the likelihood of injury. There’s an argument that head guards in Rugby also don’t really protect the head itself that much. It’s more to do with the ears. If anything a gum shield offers more protection against concussion.

I only played Rugby a couple of times at school but that was enough. There were a few big bullies who used it as an excuse to beat you up if you ever came in possession of the ball. So the whole object of the game for me was to get rid of the ball as quickly as possible, but even that did not guarantee you wouldn't be tackled.
My school experience of Rugby put me off the game for about 20 years.

Banning it isn't the answer, just like stopping under a certain age heading a football. They'll suffer in later life by not using the correct technique. All they need to do is teach the correct technique from a young age. Headed balls and played rugby most of my life. Never done me any harm.

I've always said about a scrum cap (mainly because I've always said Petr Chech wears one for no reason). There's minimum padding and protection on a scrum cap. They're for protection of the ears more than anything else!

I’m well aware that they develop at different points. I’m not quite sure the relevance of your point as a reply to mine though.

If someone who knows what they are doing teaches the kids in the first place by breaking down each individual coaching point of a particular event in a game it’s fine. I do that on a daily basis and most of the kids seem to pick it up pretty quick.

unless its at an actualy rugby club where kids wanna learn is ay 100% ban it, if i am blessed with a child i may well say refuse to do it. rugby is something forced upon kids in school, its more dangerous than football so fuck the shitty sport

at my school majority of year group loved football not rugby and had no intention of playing it when older. i know i most certainly have not!

I have an 8 year old who plays Hockey, she could get whacked with the stick and injured from that. She goes swimming too, it's forced. She could drown.

You can also get serious injuries playing football if you land funny going for a header.

I'd have no issues with mine playing Rugby, she would probably enjoy it.

So what about athletics? Javelin, shot put? Etc etc. All these are/can be dangerous too. We can't just ban everything in life that's dangerous. Nothing would ever get done. More school kids are knocked down by cars on way to/from school than what are injured in Rugby/sports accidents at school. Are you gonna stop driving your car though?
It works both ways.
I never ever thought about rugby until I got to secondary school, I was all about football. And had I not of played it at school I probably never would of. As a football fan who's quite good at rugby I'd of missed out. Neither of my parents are rugby fans so would never of taken me to a rugby club as I played football all through primary.

I didn't mind Rugby, I didn't really know the rules like offside etc as I wasn't that serious about it but I liked getting the ball and running as fast as I could to not get hammered or just rugby tackling people.

If somebody falls funny from a slide tackle they can also get hurt.

I hope no parent has to have a child injured from anything at all, but it also doesn't mean ban everything where there is a chance of injury.

To be fair CC4L, it's very rare in Rugby you lunge head first into a tackle. 99.9%of tackles that I make are arms around the legs or shoulders or a pull of a shirt or a tap of the ankles as they run past. You're more likely to get injured in a scrum or a rook than you are in a tackle.

i understand what you are saying but i am not disputing injuries can occur anywhere

i simply think it should be banned at young age in schools not rugby clubs, dont like feeling of allowing neck injuries to be easily done
