Now I am as much of a fan of Sheaf as anyone, apart from Sick Boy of course, but comparing him with Claude Makalele is going a bit far.

He scored 2 goals in his whole Chelsea career

I don't think Sheaf should be expected to score goals, it’s not really his job to do so, other than chip in with a couple every now and again. It certainly shouldn’t be used as a judgment on how good he is as a midfielder. His defensive side and ball progression is superb. He deserves as much credit for the clean sheets as the back 5.

Hard to score goals when you redefine the position you play in by quite literally patrolling infront of your defenders and behind your midfielders all game every game ..

What a defensive midfielder he was , the greatest ever ? Maybe

Look up , the makelele role

Long story short , makelele played slightly deeper than sheaf

Sheaf performance on Tuesday v Blackburn was one of the best individual performances I've seen by a CCFC player. He's not the finished article every single game but he is a fantastic footballer. Criticism he's getting on this thread by some is ridiculous

Sheaf just has that little bit of quality that permeates his game. Not everything he does pays off, which is why he is slightly inconsistent, but that's improving every season. Another year or two and he'll be a leading championship midfielder and will be off to the prem.

Completely agree, especially in the midfield we play with with 3 or 4 in the box, Hamer, Allen, O'Hare and Palmer are the ones that push on and make runs into the box. Sheaf only gets the odd chance from 25 yards. His job is to sit and retain the ball, which he does excellently.

Ohare
Palmer
Hamer
Allen
Sheaf

out of the 5 of them ,Sheaf is the least important player on that list for scoring goals.

His job is to break up play and get us playing, which he is superb at. The Guy is a class act. You won’t see him on the scoresheet very often because it’s not his job.

take him out the team and we would miss him as much as Ohare / Hamer/ Vik. We just haven’t had a chance to see it yet.

We did at Stoke

I think the issue with Sheaf and scoring isn’t so much whether it’s his “job” or not.

For whatever reason he often finds himself outside of the box with options to pass or shoot.

Sometimes the easiest one is to shoot - the defence has parted or he’s picked up a loose ball and the shot is on. If he gets it on target there’s always a chance a striker gets a rebound chance.

Maybe it’s a confidence thing but more often he will turn down the shot and make a pass. Because he panics the final ball is often under/over/miss hit. This frustrates the crowd particularly if he side passes to a lesser positioned teammate and the opportunity stops.

Sheaf is an ok player. He has skill and we are better with him than without. He’s cut out a lot of the dithering that cost him and us last year, he just needs to work on his final ball selection (pass or shot) around the box.

I think you could level this accusation at almost everyone in the squad bar Hamer and Palmer.

I don’t know.

Allen - yes. Almost identical - maybe it’s a training ground thing, in a similar way Cal also but he’d tend to try and dribble in and get fouled rather than shoot. Not that that’s the wrong tactic for him - just saying.

The rest of the mids (who we can compare Sheaf to) - Eccles? Don’t know.

Panzo used to shoot - seems to have stopped. Maybe it’s trained out of them and they are told to pass in rather than take a long shot. Who knows.

I think it’s something he’s improved on this season, he’s had a couple of pot shots from the edge of the area after a corner or similar. I think Allen and O’Hare can’t hit the ball from that distance. Not seen Eccles try but he doesn’t look like a player who can whack them. I’d like to see Bidwell take a few more as well, reckon he could score a screamer.

Was amazed we didn’t shoot on sight against Blackburn with that dodgy keeper TBH.

His last 5 games.

Sheff Utd. 0 shots 2 key passes

Rotherham 1 shot 1 key pass

Blackpool 2 shots 2 key passes

Blackburn 2 shots 4 key passes

Watford 1 shot 0 key pass

Not bad for a defensive central midfielder.

The debate on Sheaf can continue, but I find it staggering people in the squad value thread think he's worth 3.5 million. That seems ridiculously high.

At the moment you have to ask who in the midfield you would drop for him. Our strongest 11 probably doesn't have him in it as it stands. Maybe that's down to how well others have done, but even so.

Think sheaf will become the best out of him hamer and COH in terms of career in the game.

meh, I got an E in French.

The four who are top Championship players. The difference in quality between those 4 and Eccles and Allen is so big you could lose Andy Thorn down it.

Yes, but at the moment you wouldn't drop Allen, certainly I wouldn't.

Might have been different 3 months ago, but this is my point. As things stand at the moment Sheaf is probably 5 out of 6 for me. I would even put Palmer above him in that midfield, which is staggering for me to say, I know.

It's not a 'clueless' observation.

No. You don’t drop the guy with the most tackles in the division for Jamie Allen to play DM.

If you want Allen you’re dropping O’Hare or Palmer and that’s just silly IMO.

I wouldn't either, and he's been more effective than Sheaf this season in my view, but you'd have to change system or style if subbing Allen in for Sheaf.

That said, we did just that a couple of times last season.

Which goes back to what I'm saying. It isn't black and white. Sheaf doesn't walk into the team so easily as things stand.

Someone is getting dropped depending on how we set up. It makes our bench stronger but it also means someone reasonable is missing out. Could be Palmer, could be Sheaf.

Not a bad problem to have, but I'm just not in the camp of sticking him at the top of the team sheet.

No. We have one championship quality holding midfielder in the squad and it’s Ben Sheaf. It’s as black and white as it comes. The next closest is Kelly. Allen isn’t a DM, at best he’s backup for Hamer or in a pinch one of the AMs.

We do also have to factor in your irrational hatred of Allen when you speak though mate to be fair .. it's basically the same way grendel speaks about Robins at this point 🤣 I generally agree but the way you put Allen down is just a bit predictable

Allen plays first team football for Coventry city , an established championship side and often starts , he's played over 100 games at championship level .. he's a championship player
