Best Coventry Central Midfielder? (3 Viewers)

So who do we think our best ever CM was?

For me it's got to be Gary McCallister. I remember he had some bad games as he came back from injury and even got booed off the pitch. But when he was fit I genuinely think he was one of the best UK born players to have graced the game. He wasn't great at tackling back but he was so good at distributing the ball he made even the great Stephen Gerrard look average.

McAllister was only really fully fit for the 99/00 season, he should have had an operation and kept delaying it until he finally broke down in 97/98 against Spurs at HR which caused him to miss the WC in France. For me it would be Stewart Robson who also suffered with injuries, to be honest without his persistent back injury there is no way he would have played for us.

McAllister for spraying passes all over, but I quite liked Safri as well. Still remember his top pocket free kick. Maybe Boateng.

Stewart Robson was immense for the one fully fit season he had. If he hadn't suffered from the injury problems he did he would have been an England regular.

Gary Mac, Stewart Robson, Wise, Boating, Soltvedt. Would love any of those back now. Honourable mentions to Safri and Stephen Hughes ( first season). Also Boozy was responsible for playing one of the best ever balls I have seen in my life.

Was that in the D in our half where it seemed to split about 7 players?

Never liked Gary Mac. One good season when his contract was expiring and then he fucked off to Liverpool.

Boateng for me transformed us from an average side to a very good side and one that should've won the cup.

he only had the type of players around him that he needed for one season. The only player who ever used to move for him was Huckerby until the Moroccans came.

There are 4 that I can think of. Terry Yorath, Dean Emerson, George Boateng and Stewart Robson. Emmo and Robson would have won England caps with us had it not been for Injuries. Boateng was immense and Yorath was just very hard.
I liked Boozy but not a patch on the others.
Certainly agree with Yorath, not only a midfield general but also captain of a very good City team. Many great memories of the 77-78 season in particular. Maybe being 'very hard' was a result of his education at Leeds United? o_O

Yup, his 'legacy' is coloured by having a great final season. if he'd had a fantastic first season then two mediocre ones, people wouldn't think anywhere near so well of him.

I saw him score at Wembley in the year that we signed him. Sublime passer of the ball, but I don't think he was entirely suited to English football.

My vote goes for Lloyd McGrath, and always will. He was Sillett's first name on the teamsheet and that's good enough for me. :)

(Gary McAllister and Stewart Robson if you prefer silk to steel though)

Lloyd McGrath for me not the best but fully committed to the cause, always put his body on the line, remember him in a wall once and the ball hit him straight in the knackers (ouch) and he carried on till the ball was cleared.
