One of my all time favourites and a really nice guy as well
Remember having my picture taken with him and Killer at Ryton on the Sunday following the FA Cup win

Okay, so, why don't we on Saturday....

Chant 'Cyrille, Cyrille, Cyrille' in the 9th minute against Swindon, because he was our number 9 and then again in the 87th minute to celebrate his part of the 1987 cup win!

Trust tribute

All at the Sky Blue Trust are deeply shocked and saddened to hear todays awful news about Cyrille Regis.

Many players these days are described as “legends” but few really fit the bill. Cyrille was most certainly one that did.

Not just for the way he graced the field of play, and anyone who ever saw him play will tell you what a fine player he was, but also in the way he conducted himself both on and off the pitch.

Sky Blues fans of a certain generation still wax lyrical about Cyrilles contribution to the fabled 87 cup win; his incredible goal at Hillsborough in the quarter final against Sheffield Wednesday; the way he led the line with power, aggression and flair; his inspirational performances throughout his stay at Coventry City.

Cyrille was the sort of player fans love, massively talented, exciting to watch and a man who scored great goals, not just for the Sky Blues but also for West Bromwich Albion, Aston Villa and Wolves. It says everything about Cyrille that wherever he went on his footballing travels he was adored. Not necessarily a great goal scorer …but a scorer of great goals. A player who led by example.

He was also a trailblazer. One of only a small number of black players in the game, he was subject to abhorrent racist abuse in his early playing days. He responded with dignity, power and the best answer possible, spectacular winning performances.

One of the finest players to grace the shirt of Coventry City his untimely death at the ridiculously early age of 59 has left many city fans distraught.

Our thoughts are with Cyrille’s family at this incredibly sad time.

He will be greatly missed.

A gentleman, an ambassador, an inspiration…and without doubt a legend !

Me and me mate went early, walked down the back of the West Terrace and was walking past the corner of the West Terrace and Main Stand that was open for anyone just to walk up. We walked up as the game was still on and suddenly Cyrille got an equaliser, we were ecstatic and running around on the corner of the pitch. Brilliant days.

I remember some lucky sod won a million on the pools because of that goal! Hope they raise their glass to Cyrille tonight.
 
Just looking at the goals, not many English strikers like that nowadays. Record for League Cup goals in a match I believe?
 
Sad loss, a great man and great player. A real gentleman and great professional and did so much to help black players being accepted in the game.

He may not have been a prolific goal scorer but was a scorer of great goals. For me his strength was holding the ball up (it just stuck to him) and playing other players in.

One of the best to ever wear a city shirt. RIP big man.
 
I was heartbroken on hearing he had passed away, I haven't been able to concentrate all day. I had the pleasure of meeting Cyrille a few times, he was always a true gentleman, and always had time for people, today I have lost one of my true heroes.

Thanks for the memories Big C, thanks for being one of the reasons I love football and thanks for being part of one of the greatest day's of my life.

You may be gone but you will live forever as a true Coventry City Legend, farewell.
 
Just like to add one more thing Cyrille’s untimely death has made local and national news throughout the day this is a player who retired over 25 years ago, wasn’t with one of the glamorous clubs perhaps he should have been, and basically only a Midland based footballer, not in the public spotlight after his career as a pundit but seen and remembered as a true football great which he was. I am proud he was part and a significant part of my club.

Totally heartbreaking news, it was hard to not well up at work all morning. One of my heroes, an absolute legend and a total gentleman. He was the fulcrum of the attack when I first started going and so many memories are of his give and go on the halfway line a bit like the Sheff Wed FA Cup goal. Him and Benno were the ones who always got us out of our seats.

Only the other week I linked the last-gasp winner from the 4-3 against Spurs in the FA Cup season. I must have watched it then around 30 times, over and over-my favourite goal from my favourite ever game bar the cup final: such composure, skill, vision, determination and stamina to take the ball down perfectly on a muddy pitch, lay it wide, bust a gut to get into the box on the end of the ball in, and then again to get to the rebound and nod home before anyone else could react, and then make off on that Linford Christie-like sprint in celebration, finger wagging in the air, looking like he could play another 90 minutes! I remember my dad moaning that "his legs had gone" after we signed him-well, that goal and the likes of the Sheff Weds one proved him wrong! Was so gutted when we let him go, but fairplay to him for the way he showed up just what a monumental error that was by having a cracking season for Villa.

RIP Cyrille and thank you for so many wonderful memories. You will be greatly missed.

Was his trademark....back to goal, roll the centre half leaving him floundering in his wake and homing in on goal like a raging bull. One of the most exciting sights in English football. Will never forget the mayhem in the West end after his headed rebound winner v Spurs.

Hopefully they will do a minute at the next home game. In fact, I suggest two, one at 9 minutes and 87 minutes.

Yes that incredible Spurs match, and that time-stands-still double-header goal are among my favourite Sky Blue memories - I was in the West End that dark afternoon and the place went absolutely mental.

It really was, the crowd would roar whenever he did it, or laid off then made the run for the return, magical stuff. Best back-to-goal forward I ever saw.
 
Yeah devastated with this , he was the one I used to pretend to be playing on radford common as a kid

Snoz was just on Radio 5 Live paying a great tribute to Big Cyrille.

Said how thrilled he was when he told him they would change from long ball over the top to playing it through to his feet. How he was a massive part of the great spirit in the Cup-winning squad too.

We should definitely do it. Chants of 'Cyrille' on the 9th and 87th minute and should be the whole ground in unison. Hopefully the Swindon fans will join in too.
 
Sad news. Was lucky enough to meet & chat with him a couple of times, the most memorable being at a friend's wedding he also attended at the Chesford Grange. Me & a mate hijacked him & reminisced about all things Cov. He entertained & joined in with our memories just like his own, even if he had heard it all before. A great footballer, an inspiration & pioneer for black players at a time where racism was unsubtle and rife, but also a lovely fella. RIP Cyrille!
 
Can anyone confirm if the fans are doing something for Saturday as I will gladly make it my first game of the season for me. Was my hero as a lad and he always spoke to my old dad and had all the time in the world for anyone.
Might bump into Matesx or Reg or old Cloughie.
 
Shocked by this news, still hasn't sunk in. A legend of a human being by all accounts. True sky blue legend. What a personality.

The guy oozed class and respect.

RIP SIR Cyrille Regis.
