Sunderland are bigger than every Championship club apart from Leeds I would say
I think Sheffield Wednesday push them close.... Historically that is
It's also hard to discount forests 2 European Cup successes
Sheffield Wednesday not for me. Big club yes but not bigger than Sunderland. They last got 30k avg in 1968. Even we have a 30k avg more recently than them in 1970
We're no different to most clubs on that front. It's a total myth that our gates fluctuate massively in a way that doesn't happen elsewhere. Look at Pompey, were getting 7-10K in the second tier in the late 90s. Sunderland went from 15K in the mid 90s to 46K by the early 2000s.
Had a Bristol City fan tease me about attendances recently, yet up until about 2012 we were by bar the better supported club, in the 100 years previous they'd only managed to beat our average on a handful of occasions. These things go in cycles and we're at the bottom of the cycle.
I love it when people think they know the attendance better than the official figure, because they think they can estimate a load of dot-sized people in a stadium.
also they know those who have paid but not attended

It's also hard to discount forests 2 European Cup successes, well also the fact they've won more major honours

Never sure where this Sheffield Wednesday thing came from, they’ve never pulled in enormous crowds and I think they’re overestimated in terms of size.I think Sheffield Wednesday push them close.... Historically that is

You’re missing the point. Within the same season their crowds would not fluctuate as much as ours would. The general rise of crowds since the 80s is not the point being made, its that with us we can wildly swing from match to match.Absolutely agree, we’re not different to most clubs when it comes to big fluctuations in attendances in time dependant on how teams do.
Newcastle late eighties early nineties still under Keegan 17 to 20k to 50k in 2000.
Chelsea’s I remember them getting 8to 10k in late eighties to 40k under Gullit.
Man City mid 90s 25k average to 50k average 10years later.
In just 10 years most these clubs average attendances more than doubled.
Chelsea’s fluctauations in attendances is just mental, going from 50k plus in history down when they had 100k stadium to 10/15k in eighties then back up 40/50 plus. Just few years later.
Reminds of all the chants back in the day.
“Where were u when you were were shit”............ I remember singing that at Stamford bridge in mid 90s.
Who does that? I never completely bought into the whole “they’re lying about the attendance” thing myselfI love it when people think they know the attendance better than the official figure, because they think they can estimate a load of dot-sized people in a stadium.

Decent yes but not one of the monsters of the game which is a widely held opinion.Considering they are in a two-club city with another equally sized club, their crowds have been decent the last 40 years.

I think Derby have brilliant support- not a big place but what I’d call a proper football town, it’s in their genes. More loyal than Forest for sure. Never 50k plus or anything but always good gates.
No chance. Well supported but that's it.
Since the war they have won exactly the same amount of trophies as we have.
You are dead right there. That’s the difference- the Baseball Ground was a legendary place and loud & atmospheric as hell, but they didn’t spend a decade and a half complaining, they kept behind the team, it’s what they do. I know there are big reasons why it didn’t happen with us but you know what I mean.Yeah, definitely agree with Derby. Moving to their new stadium did the club wonders. It's what should have happened with us.
Give over. Bigger than Forest?
It’s a combination of things- Sunderland are a bad club living in the 1930s with good support. Forest are a club with much more recent success but would never pull in Sunderland’s crowds- does that make them bigger? I dunno, probably not though. We’re easily as big as teams like Brum, WBA (rarely sold out in the Prem), Brighton, Palace, Southampton (actual crowds 5k+ lower than reported) etc- there’s a CCFC shaped gap in the top league at some stage without us looking out of place. They get more in L1 than we would in the Premier League
Not sure you can just cancel out a period to suit your argument or you could say since the start of the Premier League Wigan have won more than Leeds
I wonder how a non CCFC fan sees us as a club @Jukeblue

100%We do have fantastic away support ... Under the circumstances it's up there with the best in the football league, I can only imagine what it would be like if we were a successful club

I couldn’t agree more with you there. We are definitely in that tier of Birmingham, Southampton, etc. Leicester would have sat in there too until their recent success.
Definitely. Other clubs have grown their crowds and we’re no different, it’s just that we went about it a weird way with boycotts and constant disasters, we see our growth in away support, home would catch up if the off the field stuff was sorted and we went up again.Strangely I think our away support now is far better than I ever recall in the top flight, plenty of sub 1k turnouts even for Saturday games
