Heard him on TalkSport earlier talking about Hull City name change situation. Think he often offers realistic, intelligent & well considered opinion personally.
What he said was that when you accept an owner into a club in any sport...they put in their money - & THEY make the decisions. Fans' only say in any matters such as the name change is to show what they think by boycotting games, & starve them of their income - stay away as-in...NOPM!
He suggested this is the hardest hitting message for any owner & the only thing that will make them listen.

It's very interesting this situation for Hull, what their owner is either oblivious too or ignores that English Football, English Football fans and this country is huge on tradition and history. Hull City of course don't want there name changed and you can completely understand where the fans are coming from, however the sport that this was 100/50/25 years ago is completely different it's very money orientated and pressure is on to bring suceess in order to bring in the biggest streams of revenue. Owners invest millions into clubs and in Hull's case their owner has stated he doesn't have the funds to continue throwing at making Hull a success and needs to find ways of improving the revenue, I believe they even tried to purchase the Freehold (?) to the KC Stadium recently but this was rejected by the local council.

Sad times, but if Hull were to boycott games to do it in the Premier League game would be huge in terms of advertisement and as a statement.

I love tradition and hope Hull Fans find a way to stay as Hull City.

I just read on the BBC site that Hull City fans are 'urging the FA to protect the heritage and traditions of the sport'.

Good luck with that, guys!

The FA / FL will most likley do nothing as usual but it would actually be a very easy thing for them to prevent. Presumably the golden share names Hull City so they should just tell the owner that if he changes the name the new club won't have a share and will go to the bottom of the pyramid.

Chief, that is by far the smartest post I've read in a while. Can we elect you head of the FA, please.

:D

This is no worse than the Bluebirds playing in red. Or a club playing 34 miles from home.

The FA/FL will do f all.

The owners of CCFC, Hull, Cardiff, and probably many other clubs, have no regard for the history or heritage of their clubs or the game. It is just all a corporate moneypit now, and the fans are simply seen as the cash cow, whether that is through gate receipts, hospitality, Sky cash, replica shirts and other tat.

The FA are celebrating 150 years this year, yet seem to have scant disregard for the traditions of the game that have made it what it is. They are appalling custodians of our sport, full of self-servers and corporate suits. Is it any wonder people become disillusioned with football?

Change the name, colours or location without proper fan consultation and you'll anger a lot of people.

I think you are right in what I think you are suggesting. However, times change...but tradition doesn't. For example Singers FC had limited appeal but were changed to represent the City & hence gain a wider appeal - mostly for those in or connected to the City...making it palatable. MK Dons change pretty much enforced as Wimbledon is not in MK nor really anywhere near it (oo-err!)...making it distasteful, unacceptable even but understandable. Hull will not, in any understandable way, have wider appeal...or gain more revenue...or more success as a result of the proposed name change.

Coventry Talbot - what genius thought that up ?
To put it into context, that was in an era of limited (maybe even non) sponsorship on shirts and the like i believe, so iirc that's why it was kicked back, not because of the awful name.

I seem to recall it was Jimmy Hill's idea. Fortunately the FA/FL were having none of it, but times were rather different then.

Jimmy, bless him, had some great ideas, but also quite a few duff ones too-this was one of them.
When we were on tv, we had to wear a different shirt that wasn't showing such blatant advertising.

I'd take us being called 'Coventry Bleeding Anus' if it meant playing at home in the premier league. Then we could fight to get the name changed. Our situation is 1000000 times worse than theirs.

Edit: I'm not saying it's a competition who's situation is worse, and fair play to Hull fans for sticking to what they beleive in.

I don't quite get the Hull situation. The only comparison I could make is if there was a request to change our name to "Coventry Sky Blues"... tbh wouldn't bother me that much...

Surely a compromise would be for them to be called "Hull City Tigers"... I mean it is their nickname anyway so in the grand scheme of things I don't see why it is such a big problem.
