I can only go on what the accounts say which claim we signed 11 players to start this season all on free transfers
A bit of a mystery then
Could be that the initial payment was delayed until the following financial year?
That happens quite often especially at lower division clubs where FFP rules apply

I'm sure I saw Biamou was a 70-80k figure somewhere. And wasn't Walker £600k rather than a million?

Walker was reported in Nottingham as “a six figure fee” so less than £1m certainly. Similarly Bakayoko was reported as “£200k including add ons”

We spent in that season £800,000 on players coming in - Chaplin being the main expenditure

The up front figure I saw from the Walsall end for Baka was £75k, which is much more in line with that.

When you look at that season Chris Anderson was correct when he said the Maddison sale would fund the club for years after. Without that deal we’d have been dead in the water

If you accept the figures above (I realise you may not)

£2.25m went on four strikers and £1.45m on two midfielders, out of 29 players - including Bapaga, Drysdale and Eccles, who have barely featured. If I was SISU, I would be pretty chuffed with that.
