Out here in California I go to NHL hockey and our local hockey team has a good idea for attracting supporters. They give out a free bobble head at certain games. The head looks like one of the players and it's a collectible item because over the full season you can get the whole team. It's a great incentive to go to the game because people want to collect the full set of heads.

Moreover, the only way you can get one is by turning up to the stadium early (as supply is limited) so it also increases the sales of food and beverages with early footfall. I am guessing the bobble head would only cost about a quid to manufacture if the club gets several thousand done in one go. Although they are cheap they are quite good as collectibles (I have them lined up on a shelf in my office). It would be a great way to attract young fans especially as match programmes are now being viewed as less of a collectible item.

I've been to California twice, LA/San Fran both times, surprised how cool the weather is in summer and pleasant it is in winter. Also I know surfing is always linked to the West Coast but the pacific ocean seems so cold

Very good point. I love going to live sports in US and they make a real event of the games but most are a lot more expensive than various sports over here

i met him here in toronto at the world cup hockey at private event was chatting to him for good hour very nice guy, i didnt have a nhl team so decided pick la kings thanks to him and he even stayed in contact with me on fb said if i was ever out in la can go for a game of golf lol.

It wouldn't make people think "I really don't want to go today but I have to so I can get my figure of a player".

It might be a nice gesture, but it isn't going to be something that makes or breaks a decision to go to a game or not.

Realistically, how many fans will be "I wasn't going to bother but I went to just get the figure?"

I can understand for example fans going anywhere doing something they wouldn't usually like getting there half an hour early to go in the family zone to get a figure as they are going anyway, but it isn't going to be the deciding factor is it?

American sports franchises are so ahead of us on fan engagement it's incredible. And the bobblehead isn't a big "Yeah this will put 10,000 extra fans in seats" idea it's more along the lines of doing something for the fans, showing they're appreciated. And it's fun and cheap for the club.

Say if on the first game of the season next year, CCFC put out a statement saying the first 500 fans through the turnstiles get a free copy of the Playoff Final DVD. That could potentially mean 500+ fans getting into the Ricoh an hour or so earlier than they normally would. An hour extra in the Stadium = say an extra £10 spent on food and drinks per person. It's worth it.

My point is that collectibles are habit inducing. Yes they are not going to persuade non CCFC fans to go. But for someone who goes to say 6 games a season it could increase their habit to say 15 games per season particularly if they’ve got kids who want to complete their collection. Psychologically people don’t like missing out on collectibles when they already have some. Won’t work for everyone but for some people it would definitely work.

But the DVD would just be a one off. My idea is to try and increase the habit among people who sometimes go but who are not regulars. We have LOADS of fans in that category. Increase the frequency of their attendance would increase our gates.

Jimmy Hill was a pioneer of new ideas in football. Some worked, many didn’t. But surely there’s no harm in trying. Personally I think our club could do with refinding it’s reputation as an innovative and imaginative club. If it doesn’t pay for itself the idea can be scrapped. But if it works ...

The stadiums and the amenities are set up specifically for the fans. The seating at Tampa Bay Lightning is padded, food and drinks are delivered to your seats, the food and drink options on the concourse are endless and there’s plenty of restrooms (yes, restrooms).

However, give me an entertaining and successful team; then I won’t give a shiny shit if I’m limited to a few Carlings, a nuclear hot microwaved pie and having to peel my frozen arse off a hard plastic seat.

However, where the food and beverage is concerned, I'd like City to get a bigger % compared to whatever we get now, due to it being a City initiative.
