Interesting article in the Nuneaton News suggesting Burge is going to be Number 1 with perhaps an experienced number 2 in on loan / a free.

Perhaps the most insightful article of the summer so far as to Mowbrays ideas.

TALENTED goalkeeper Reice Charles-Cook has hinted at a potential loan move back to Nuneaton Town this summer– but only if Coventry can land an experienced number two.
Sky Blues manager Tony Mowbray told Nuneaton News Sport he is keen on promoting 22-year-old Lee Burge as the club's number one stopper and admits that could pave the way for Charles-Cook to leave on loan.
Mowbray said: "I like Burge and I would like to progress his career but that's down to him.
"If he messes up too often he'll find himself out of the team, which, as a young goalkeeper, will happen at some stage to him.

"If we're being honest and realistic, I'd ideally like to add a more experienced goalie around the training ground to compete with him but again that comes down to finance.
"If that's not a real priority to me and I'm happy enough with Burge, why would I spend a percentage of my budget on a goalkeeper that isn't going to play?
"I'd rather spend it on a centre forward or a midfield player or whatever I'm going to strengthen."

When asked if Nuneaton could take a young goalkeeper, Mowbray admitted there was a possibility.
The Sky Blues boss said: "Reice asked me at the end of last season if he could go out on loan.
"But that will all – like a pack of cards really – depend if I think he should play first-team football as a young goalie himself.
"He's a very talented young goalie but he needs to play in a team with some pressure.
"There's a potential for that (a loan move to Nuneaton) but that might coincide with us wanting to loan a reserve ourselves, but do you loan a number two goalkeeper?
"Not really. He'll be a free transfer goalkeeper somewhere who we can bring in on a low salary.
"I signed Dimitrios Konstantopoulos who played at this football club at Middlesbrough, who just left AEK Athens.

They must all be at the Godiva, give the amount of stick he gets and the general consensus we need an experienced first choice (personally I thought he improved in the second spell) I was expecting....

I think he got better too. It's a real confidence position. I think he could come good for us. Far better than that excuse of a player from Bournemouth!

Allsop did improve towards the end but he wasn't good enough,seemed an odd character, the verbals with the crowd away at Crewe was very unprofessional yes he was getting stick but he carried on giving it back for the whole of the first half after the first goal went in, seemed way to easily distracted & edgy for me! Can't believe he's just got a new contract at Bournemouth!

I think Burge will be fine for us. Excellent shot stopper and a relief to see a keeper come off his line after jittery Ryan.

Burge should be given a chance. Keeper is like no other position on the pitch in that you can be a bystander for 88 minutes and then blunder, AS ALL KEEPERS HAVE DONE. He has one of the best mentor in the game with Oggy and like many young keepers before him Burge will come good. Schmichel, Hart, Foster all made errors when young and almost to a keeper thought these guys will never make it, but they did. We've had contless manangers now and ALL like Burge.

Must say at the Worcester game I didn't want to see the lad in a City shirt again, but he's come back very well & deserve certainly to start the season as number 1 & see what he can offer, hopefully a decent but cheap backup can come in to compete and allow Charles RC a season or certainly 6 month loan spell elsewhere maybe in the conference as opposed to whatever pub league Nuneaton are now in.

Was disappointed when I read this article as I really cannot stand the thought of this useless bugger being our number 1 but I would love nothing more than him to prove me wrong... Just cannot see it.

Spending a significant proportion of the budget on a decent number 1 for me is almost equally as important as a 20 goal striker. Burge was given multiple chances last season and always fluffed his lines. Never filled us with confidence.

If he goes with Burge, he goes with Burge. Like TM said if he makes too many mistakes then he'll be out of the team and replaced, so it's a common sense approach to a problem. How refreshing.

Yes but people overlook the fact that a lot of our goals conceded, in the last two years, come from frailties in midfield. So many of our goals come from the loss of possession in midfield.

It was amazing last year how we could offer so little up front and always look short at the back. If that's not down to midfield I don't know what is.

Burge is a better goalie than many are giving him credit for. There's plenty of room for improvement but he has some great aspects to his game, his shot stopping ability especially and I didn't see any frailties that can't be coached. He made steady improvement all season while playing and grew in confidence. It's too easy to blame the goalie. You have to look at where those goals started and most were from midfield mistakes. Some of the wayward passing was pitiful last season in midfield.

And part of Mowbery's brief is to develop the players we have, it is not all about going out and buying/acquiring a team. He has cleared the deadwood. He will want to bring in about 4 who have experience, been their done it and still have two to three years left in them.

but developing the youngsters is equally key to achieving a successful team.

Imo I would keep burge as number 1 too. Save the budget for outfield players. No point getting another Allsop in to be number 1

It's easy to say these mistakes and frailties can be coached out of him but it isn't like he's 18. He's approaching 24 - yes relatively young for a keeper - but take the Crewe game for example, he almost cost us our place in the division with 2 glaring errors.

Look back at the goals conceded against Peterborough when he dived in the opposite direction, the 2 free kicks he was beaten by, numerous flaps, spills, failure to keep the ball in play from goal kicks etc.

For me, he isn't a safe pair of hands and my prediction is that people's patience will soon wane before he is made the scapegoat. There are keepers out there with twice the talent who we could acquire for a wage which wouldn't dent the budget too much.

The wages would be better spent in midfield in my opinion. Take the pressure of defence and the goalie and move the ball forward into goal scoring opportunities. This was the basis of our dismal season and improvement here is where we will gain the most benefit of what we have to spend on wages.

If we can tie down Reda and Ricketts I will be more confident (it will give Burge less to do) but I agree about the midfield area. We need a big name signing (for league 1) to play alongside Fleck plus a strikeforce who will strike fear into our opponents. I would hope that this is the week it all starts to come together.

The thing is when TM finally agreed to the job , we thought talking about using the budget for basic things like pre season tours , and a goalkeeper were a given , no top ten team In this league is being run like this , wouldn't matter if fergie was in charge , but like fergie , I thought TM would have had a bit more influence on the basics , time will tell ,but as has been said on other threads , you do have to have some basics in place to run a football club at any level .we just don't seem to have them , hope im wrong but I see a real struggle who ever we sign , what is sisus end game, if we can not afford a goalkeeper , how on earth are they gonna get there money back even if we did ok next year and got 10000-12000 its peanuts and only puts back to a 8000 or 9000 crowd with last years prices

Do you mean one that wouldn't come to Coventry even if we were mid-table Premiership? One that has gone off the rails & can't be arsed anymore? Or an injury prone has-been big name? All of who would cost big wages!

Personally I think we need 2 central midfielders as fleck is too comfortable, unstoppable as he had no real competition and for me he has been pretty poor for the best part of 18 months, and could do with some genuine competition I don't necessarily think we need a "big name" player, we need the right type of player at least one needs to be a box to box as fleck rarely reaches the 18 yard box. In fact we've been let down by most of the big name players we've had (kilbane, de Zeuw, Jackson, Pugh, etc).

He's 22, and he hasn't really had much first team experience which is what helps players to improve. He made some fantastic saves at points last year, he came and claimed the ball brilliantly at times. Yes in his first few games he was beaten by free kicks but after that he wasn't as he had learnt from it.
People complain about not having any talent in this country when in actual fact we have hugely talented players, but they aren't given a chance to improve and show themselves if they make mistakes. Which everyone does.

You need a decent keeper to make any progress. City have been fortunate over the years in generally having good keepers and some of them were largely responsible for keeping our top flight status for as long as we did. Even at the level we are at now, we need someone who is better than what we have at the moment if we want to progress. Burge is what he is - an ordinary keeper at League One/Two level. If we want to challenge at this level we need someone better. Burge is prone to errors and never looks organised, he is a flapper. Then TM needs to decide whether to keep Burge or Charles-Cook as the reserve.

I agree with that.

He seems very error prone. Westwood had played 100 games at this level at his age.

Positional sense seems poor and starting him as number one would be a big gamble.
