Fans love Bassette’s work rate (rightly so) whilst overlooking that he’s actually wasting a lot of energy and his work in the box is inferior to Simms and Wright. If anything, I want Bassette and BTA coming off the bench against tired defenders.

I almost preferred it when we had less strikers because we at least stuck with Godden and then Simms. Now, as soon as someone has a bad game, they’re dropped and no one is getting a good run in the team.
A problem today and other days is that in pressing so far up the pitch, he creates a very big gap between him and the midfield which might explain why there's often so much space when the opposition regain the ball.

100%, you look at at the play off run we had

-----------------Wilson
---McNulty - Fadz - Doyle
-----------Hamer-Sheaf
---------------Gyokeres .
As our spine

The wingbacks and the front of the box or 10 and a front 2 interchanged quite a bit but that in the main was the spine of the team.

The spine of the team this season changes ever week, there's no guaranteed goalkeeper, the central defence keeps changing, injuries and suspensions have meant the midfield keeps changing, and no one has made the striker position their own.
It's doing that team a disservice to give Hamer and Gyokeres all the credit-as good as they were, they were just two players! Consistency is so so important in football and not being able to predict how most of your team will perform on a given day does the manager no favours.

Watching Sheffield Utd again this week, they don't look a great side, but the minimum coming from their players is still very solid. Wilder doesn't accept below a certain standard, see COH getting hooked at half time.

You had Kelly there too when needed and that leadership he and Fadz brought to the team was worth just as much as a Hamer or Vik.

We kept 22 clean sheets that season and we scored 58 goals, less than the 23/24 season and even tracking behind this season.

The root of all our problems is the defence where there’s just a lack of experience in that team. They’re not organised and it’s evident in every game so far. Their second goal is avoided today with more discipline in midfield and the CBs by keeping their shape.

While my ranting on corners is now infamous, for us to keep conceding free headers at them despite packing the box shows how badly organised things must be.

When Bidwell is back I would make him captain.
This shows were we are now at. I was hoping at the start this season a team pushing for play offs .. Bidwell, Allen, Da Silva and Eccles would be bit part players and should no be starting in a top championship side.

Watching the groups pre match huddle the last couple of games, I thought it was interesting that the person giving instructions to the team was Bobby Thomas.

The lack of leaders is a huge problem but do we have any better options for captain than Sheaf?

I think this comes back to our recruitment strategy, if we don’t want to sign more experienced players as they don’t have the same sell on value, it’s harder to have natural leaders. Obviously this should be all about balance within the squad but unless Frank really outlines what he wants to the recruitment team and puts his foot down I can’t see us going out in Jan and adding this much needed experience as it doesn’t fit ‘the model’.

Honestly, as unpopular as it may be, I think Eccles should get it.

He's about the only one who seems somewhat vocal, Lati aside.

Binks seems somewhat vocal but doesn't seem like the leader type.
Eccles is going to have to impress more than he did yesterday to stay in the team, let alone be the skipper.

Its not just experience though, with McFadz lack of pace we defended a lot deeper than we do now so there wasn't as much space to exploit in behind and in the channels. And in front of that we were always really compact and I don't think we can underestimate the work Allen does off the ball to block those passing lines off. Our game plan that season was to be defensively robust, and counter attack, which we could do with Hamers passing range into Gyokeres. We're now trying to dominate possession in the opposition's half, with a high line, and are getting caught on the counter attack a lot when we are out of our defensive shape.

I watched the Sami Hypia PL stories documentary the other day, was interesting that Hypia was captain of Liverpool and was playing poorly. The manager recognised this and gave the captaincy to Gerrard, as soon as Hypia had the responsibility taken away from him his performances became much improved.

I’m hopeful that Lampard sees this with Sheaf and gives the captaincy to someone else.

He isn’t captain material, it’s just patently obvious to anyone with eyes.

It’s a shame, though, and I feel the expectation is weighing on Sheaf. He’s not a leader, however the conundrum is; who will replace him?

The only realistic option is Bidwell.

This isn't true.

We only started that playoff winning streak when Sheaf was out injured. In fact it started the first game we were without him.

He played 90 minutes on 5 out of the 16 games which comprised that rise. In fact, in the 9 games he played no part in at all, we won 6, drew 3.

Think with new manager, you have to give players a chance as we only know what happens in front of us and not the behind the scenes.

Already said I’d push Kitching back into the side, if he starts well maybe could be a shout as he’s done it before.

Other options are limited as don’t want to give it to Bidwell only to have to give it out again later.

Might be one for who we bring in January

My bad, Liam Kelly then.

Although you're completely missing the point though, you saw Sheaf and vented a spleen. The point was had a settled back keeper, a settled back 3, Hamer a constant in midfield, and Gyokeres up front. We would switch from a box and 2 up top with a 10, but that spine was pretty much every present. We have virtually no stability in the side. All 3 keepers have played, we have switched from a back 4 to a back 3 and back again with different personnel, Eccles has been the only constant in midfield, and we have a different striker every week.

No one has made themselves undroppable.

I hate that everyone thinks it's popular to hate on Sheaf. He was outstanding last season, injured at the start of this and so influential in our mini run when back to match sharpness. Been playing injured for a few weeks still looks good on the ball and I'm sure will improve under Lampard. He's not a vocal leader and needs to add some goals, but you shouldn't need an armband to lead. He's more of a by example type captain, others need to step up too. Leaderships is more than wearing an armband. It seems there are some who like Eccles or Sheaf, I like both. We have far greater problems to address.
Sheaf adding more goals to his game....he needs to start hitting the target first, his shooting is absolutely criminal !

Our main problem is no matter how good we are playing its the constant giving the ball back to the opposition all game thats screwing us...take your pick any of the defenders, Sheaf, Eccles a gust of wind blowing on Saka the 'strikers they are all at it so energy (sometimes for those that can be arsed) is expended trying to win the ball back its either a lack of concentration or they just aint good enough I am leaning more and more to the latter !

To be fair to Lampard he had a day and a bit to train with them, he couldn't try and change them too much because of confusion (they don't seem the brightest) but at least he has the full week now and hopefully we start seeing some signs of progression before hopefully getting some players added in January (not hopeful)

All the talk about him stepping up when Hamer left, was never going to happen as they are completely different players.

Agree 100%. Maybe MR thought he could grow into the role, or something.

your captain needs to be the first name on the team sheet. Is there anyone who played today that you can see playing every game this season?

nobody stands out to me as even someone you would be bothered if they were out of the line up let alone captain material
Well this is a bit of a joke considering kelly was captain last year….

Personally think this whole thread is a bit of a joke to be honest.
The fans don't pick the captain first and foremost.

We have absolutely no insight into what he is like as a leader in the group during training, pre match, post match, or even really during a match.

He was however, made captain over all of the people listed in this thread.

Just because he doesnt scream and shout or flail arms around isnt a sign he isnt a leader. Leaders come in different types and styles.

He is playing with/through an injury because he is pivotal to us and we have no cover for him.

Not only that but the idea of publicly taking captaincy away from someone, mid season, and expecting their performances to subsequently improve is laughable, not to mention the impact this would have on the rest of the players who support Sheaf as captain.

The dressing room doesnt need any further disruptions like this, the state of this forum at the moment is really fucking bad
