I'm a massive rugby fan (hope I'm welcome here). In my opinion, any blame Wasps put on the commonwealth games causing a bad pitch will be just a poor excuse. I watched day one of the sevens and the pitch was already terrible. The sevens provided a catalyst and certainly didn't help, but it was cutting up very badly on day one. Every step taken by the players, a chunk of grass flew up in the air behind. Without the 7s, the pitch would've been ready for a couple of football games but would've deteriorated pretty quickly and been in a similar state now.
Playing 66 sevens games (or whatever the number was) isn't unheard of at all. For example, Twickenham used to host the World Sevens Series (men and womens) (9am - 6pm Saturday and Sunday) the weekend before the Gallagher Premiership final. The pitch was always immaculate for the final. CBS isn't exactly Twickenham, but it's absolutely possible to sort it out.
Spot on, this is the flaw when people say Buddy and the club should have known the 7s would do this much damage, similar events have been held elsewhere without any issue with future events taking place. The problem is that the pitch was already old and tired, Wasps then agreed to multiple events over the summer which meant there was only something like 20 days to prepare for the CWG. And as you saw as soon as anyone set foot on it the pitch rapidly deteriorated.
The original plan was to replace the pitch after the CWG. Now that we've all spent the last couple of weeks becoming pitch experts it seems that is possible but its a more expensive option, in the region of £500K. The pitch is grown elsewhere and then dropped in, lay and play I believe Dave Boddy called it. Going down that route you can have a game a matter of days after the new pitch is installed. The speculation is this didn't happen because Wasps are broke. Boddy claims the club offered to help facilitate this but we don't know the details and it would almost certainly be something the club would expect to be paid back in one form or another, not entirely unreasonable given we already pay rent.
Going forward it seems it may be possible to patch it up for a few games but the problems are then likely to return in the winter when the bad weather kicks in so realistically it would appear a new pitch is needed ASAP but that is something Wasps are not willing or able to facilitate.
The big question now is where we go from here, and playing somewhere else this season seems an increasingly likely option but of course that relies on being able to find somewhere to play and leaves the club with a big financial hole as the budget will have been prepared based on being at the CBS.
