Coventry was twinned with Belgrade in 1957.
Belgrade was, like Coventry, rebuilt after WWII, but this was certainly not the first time the city had been destroyed. The City of Old Belgrade had been fought over by innumerable nations and had been partially destroyed 38 times.
Although twinned with Belgrade in 1957, the link actually goes back to 1953 when the Yugoslav Ambassador visited Coventry and offered a gift of timber from his native country for use in the new Civic Theatre, which when finished was named The Belgrade Theatre.

I did exactly the same, I was watching the game with my daughter and shouted at the screen that I’ve just seen Coventry on a Serbian flag, she thought I’d gone mad, why would someone in Serbia be supporting Cov she said.Thought i saw that myself, but then convinced myself that i'd made a mistake.

It proves I wasn’t going mad after all. I didn’t see it again after that first time. It’s good to see us being followed in the Balkans. People who follow the big 6/7 clubs can’t grasp why someone from Eastern Europe would follow a relatively unsuccessful, trophy wise, club like ours.
