11 pages on a stroy about some player that it doesnt matter how good he is or isnt, he wont be here in 3 years, yet seemingly a lot less concern about a forum last night where our commander in chief told everyone present not to say anything to the outside world about the future of our club

:thinking about:

Two points of order...

Football managers talk in cliches. Our rookie manager is no different. If you are hanging him out to dry because he said 'he was my number 1 target', you are looking for ammunition. It is but one phrase (not even a sentence) used in an interview about having signed a player. The available players were scripted by SISU's finances and the fact that ALF (who had been openly pursued for several weeks) chose Reading. Every thread does not have to end up 'look at Thorn, what a mug'. If you are disatisfied with Thorn, it is only rational that you base this conclusion on his team selection, match tactics and substitutions. Half a sentence in an interview doesn't seem to be playing fair and highlights the fact you actively look to further your agenda (i.e. Thorn is useless).

Cody has played less than a handful of games. To slate him and to give up on him is to show a basic lack of understanding of not only our state of affairs, but probably of football generally. Not match fit, then injured does not add up to all our prayers being answered. Does it mean he will never be a decent player for the club we support? Maybe yes, maybe no. But, shock horror, none of us have a clue as we have not seen enough of him to form a reasoned opinion.

I have only just seen this rumour on here and I suspect there was interest, but doubt it had any legs. We need all the options we have got this season and I am looking forward to Cody coming back. You know full well that Platt will have a stinker in the coming weeks, be roundly slated and all of a sudden we are left with Nimely (who was too young and inexperienced before his debut and now is our best attacking option).

We are all frustrated. This is a forum for debate. But, if you could all think like me, my Friday afternoon perusals would be a lot easier. Thanks.

Very good post mate.

Good post Divedive - As for the topic of this thread, it did seem very mischievous and you have to question the motive. Cody going - inference Thorn does not know what he is doing, and surprise surprise SISU are the source of all that is evil and wrong with the world.

Everyone who mocks Thorn's claim that CM was his number one transfer target, surely by hidden insinuation is mocking that the transfer hasn't been a success; and that players such as Le Fondre was a better option. Surely it's too early to make that call? CM may turn out to be a revelation, and thus Thorn's words warranted?

Quite right. Cody could turn out to be a star; everybody ought to be rooting for that.

The issue in this thread really isn't with AT or CM, but with the immediate responses abdicating AT of any potential liability ("Le Fondre was his first choice", "it's naive to believe he really wanted Cody", "He didn't really mean what he said", etc).

I'm a member of the so-called anti-AT faction. I don't think he's a manager who makes the most of his resources or one who is tactically astute. That said, I'd be delighted if he turned it around - the club always comes first. The problem that I and many here have is not with Thorn, but the unquestioning defence of his position to an increasingly ludicrous extent (such as re-interpreting his words - I'm sure AT would be the last to walk away from his own words.)

Well said DiveDive

All this "you are either pro or anti AT" crap is for the narrow minded. He has made mistakes. Show me a manager that has not. Even the more experienced ones. I would like to see how the more experienced ones would have coped with the crap he has put up with so far. Some even leave their clubs when the cash runs dry. AT has to run a team which is more of a cash cow than football team. How do you think he really feels?

Cody McDonald has started 8 games and came on a sub 3 times. He has missed the last 6 league games through injury (yes he is definitely injured that's the reason Bournemouth pulled out of the deal), and missed the first 5 league games of the season that took place before he signed, so effective he has only been available for 16 league games, he has featured in 11 of those (69%) so he has hardly been ignored during his time here, and has featured a bit more than "less than a handful of games".

We're you at the fans forum CJ,what did AT say?

AT said that the "Cody unsettled" rumours are misplaced - he indicated he'd like to get rid of a couple of forwards when two more have been brought in, but ideally McDonald would stay too.

I agree totally with both these posts. Give the guy a chance and he will/might turn out to be a very decent player for us. Goal scoring instinct, which he has, is hard to come by especially at his price. I would like to see him given a run in the team, which at the moment won't happen as Nimely looks very good, wether Thorny gives him a go along side him may work, but only Thorn and his support team would know by how it goes in training.
What both Nimely and Cody do have is speed, and that can cause terrible trouble to big slow centre halfs , so lets give Cody time, and he could come good

So we are all agreed then.

1 Let's give CM a chance and judge him after he has played a few games together for us.

2 Stop the pathetic unfair jumping on the manager at the slightest chance just because you don't want him as manager ( ie Thorn said CM was his number 1 target blah blah ) and then there will be no need for others to stick up for him equally as blindly and we can then debate rather than argue.

No, but he could have said he was a player that we had been after. No need whatsoever to say he was his number one target unless he was mayber trying to appease the fans, told lies or indeed, he was his number 1 target. Why say something so profound? Absolutely no need to do that. Just say we are pleased to get him and he had been on our radar for some time.

I know this debate's over but just thought i'd say:

He could have said it to build the lad's confidence up.

You don't tell a boxer "yeah you're pretty good; not the best but pretty good". You exaggerate and say "you're no.1".

Not a big deal really.

Yeah gotta agree about the no 1 target thing.

It's what you say to a new signing. Nothing to do with the fans to be honest. Just like you don't tell your missus you only got with her in the first place cos her mate turned you down.

Bastard, you nicked my metaphor! Only in mine, you get dumped and the bird you end up with at the end of the same night, you say "you were always number 1" to. In my analogy, I guess you've just been dumped by ALF :p

I said exactly that when Thorn made his original pronouncement, and about a month later when the fallout started. I'd have said it in this thread but, as the 13th page has finally established, it's a bit of a boring debate.

Look, the bottom line in all this is that we have been bereft of signings and haven't had anything to analyse and digest and this in turn then turns our focus on to what we do have within this paper thin squad.. Had we got a number of players in then this debate probably wouldn't have happened, or at least not rumbled on so long and passionately.

As we have had so few signings this has just highlighted the fact that CCFC are not in a position to pay out and sign players that then go on and prove to be a failure. CM's signing is all the more highlighted due to the fact that besides him we had only brought two goalkeepers to the club.

We all desperately wanted McDonald to do well too. Had he been the goal getting maching we all hoped and prayed he'd be then we wouldn't have been bottom of the table right now.

Just trying to put some perspective on things. Not Thorn's fault that he has only been able to bring in a pitiful amount of players. Unfortunately we are in a position whereby any failure we have in the transfer market is heightened 10 fold due to the very fact that we have so little to play with.

I really hope CM can still be a key player for us in our battle to escape the dreaded drop.

I have just sat here for the last 30 mins reading lots of crap that I missed last night. Going for a beer in a boring pub was a lot better than reading what was being said here.

Why do we have to look for faults in our setup when we know what the main reasons are for our predicament?

Valiant, why is anyone an outsider if they do not live in Cov? Would have asked on the other thread, but it got closed due to going round in circles with all the crap. I was born and dragged up in Cov. OK, I now live 270 miles away. It stops me from going to most of the games each season. Each game costs me at least £250 a time. I also work shifts. I have 7 kids. We do not claim benefits of any kind. I can't afford to do every game I am not working. So you are a season ticket holder. Must be a better supporter than me. The London lot will be as supportive as yourself. Maybe most can't make every game. Does that mean they can't organise meetings/anything to do with our club?

Sorry to go off on one.

As has already been said, CM has not had a chance to show us what he can do. The reason I say he has been injured is he has not been on the bench much, and we have had players on the bench that have been carrying knocks or will hardly ever get on the pitch. This does not make him a crap signing or AT a crap manager.

CM is in the bottom 3 of our signings this season for sure. Certainly the worse outfield player we have signed this season. Stats look bad when worded like this. When you even them out with the truth you get 2 GK's and an outfield player signed. You could even say that only one of our signings have really played any games this season. The other two must be crap

Oh the fun of being a Cov fan

Yup.

The fact that he was our only outfield signing meant that in some ways he pretty much had to be a success with so much hope pinned on him.
