Been a lot of posts saying that the likes of Deegan and Platt and Bell and Baker etc. are not good enough for the Championship.

Well, my question is, if we go down would these players be good enough for League 1? And would you be inclined to get rid of any of them?


I would say Platt and Baker would be good enough for us in League 1, along with McDonald and Sheff. Fact is we have some idea who is good enough for the Championship, but it's these players who haven't set the world alight in this division I am talking about here.

Think the players above are the ones many fans have doubts about.

As for Gary Deegan? Well I am not so sure. When he's been awful he's been truly awful. Can't quite work out whether he is completely out of his depth or not.

David Bell I am afraid will be a passenger in whichever division we are in to my reckoning.

I would be basing any opinion on guesswork as my knowledge of League 1 is patchy at best. My guesses would more than likely be right, but I am opting out of this thread now. Hope it goes well.

* EDIT - sorry, I had just read a thread about pointless posts and was trying my hand.

Get rid of bell. Keep platty all the leauge 1 teams strategy is to play a game of hoof ball we should be good at that.

Baker should do okay in League 1, as should Sheff and Cody. Sheff should shine to be honest, but I guess it is all down to how hungry he is and how dirty he wants his shirt to be.

The kids should be okay (if we can retain them) and Wood and Hussey should do well too.

We now have players that could do OK in the Championship now they have experience. This is backed up by our recent form. If we could keep our present squad and also add a few more players from our U18 squad we should do well if we went down. If we manage to stay up then see us a little better than now or mid table.

Based on what we have now we would do very well in league 1. No question. There is a big difference in Championship and league 1 outfits for the most part. Hell we may be playing Cheltenham for goodness sake...you really think we couldn't do really well?
Take a look at the league now and you will see the likely hood of the few bigger clubs there are swapping places with us this year so there won't be many left there to compete with in my opinion. I'm confident it would be a promotion season from the start and what a nice change that would make!

Doesn't matter how 'big' a club is on paper, a lot of it will be down to the quality of the squad, league one is not an easy league Paxman. Lots of 'big' teams have failed to come straight back up. I would say that there isn't a lot between the top 10 league one teams and the bottom 6 championship sides.

I think our starting line up will be something like this

GK murphy
RB Clarke
cB new player (I think wood will be one of our higher earners, McPake, cranie, and keogh will leave)
Cb Cameron
Lb hussey
Rm baker
Cm Thomas
Cm new player
LM new player
CF Sheff
CF Cody

IF we could keep Keogh and IF we get demoted we should have a decent season. IF we stay up and IF we lose Keogh we will struggle again.

Leeds didnt want sheff and he played for them in league one!

Baker scored a few but played just behind front two not out wide!

McDonald is adapting to Championship fine so league 1 will be good for him. Platts fine for that level. Deegans composed enough infront of goal and our academy has been churning out good players

We will need to replace Platt. What good is having a main striker that can only play once a week? Good for the bench, not first choice though.

It would be nice to think that a team that has played in a division higher could do well in the lower league but how often does it happen? Think of the players we had when we came down from the premiership. Chippo Hedman Thompson Konjic all top players and the difference between PL and champ is far greater than champ to league 1.

And we'll have to get rid of all the higher wage earners as well. although that may not be a bad thing. starting afresh is sometimes the better option.

Is Platt usually as immobile as on Monday? Personally I'm not a big fan of big lumps up front in any division. Give me pace any day.

Pace and a player that can win high balls. Otherwise you play better on the break. Don't like playing defensively

I think we're incredibly lucky to have a few of the young players coming through that we do right now, otherwise god knows where we'd be for next season.
First of all we need to get rid of the deadwood, fresh start. I don't see us bouncing straight back up, hopefully two maybe three years. I think long term we need to bring through the youth and combine it with a mixture of experience (mcsheffrey, murphy) and then over this period bring in genuine talent from the division. Assuming sheff utd, weds and charlton go up and the current bottom three go down, we're are unequivocally the biggest club in that division, which is a major strength. Let's use it. Every year the promoted sides manage to bring with them talented players signed from other clubs in the division, e.g. Norwich.

Only one guarantee, if we have the same owners (and you have to think we will) there will be a fire sale of anyone earning above minimum wage.

So forget the current squad except those who nobody else would want.
